Canada Pension Plan (CPP) invests in MotoGP

Canada's national pension plan has invested in the company that runs the MotoGP motorbike racing series and done a debt deal with the company that owns the Formula 1 car racing league. The Investment Board of CPP announced the two transactions separately on Friday.

So if you're paying into CPP, you have a little itty bitty stake in MotoGP racing!

In the MotoGP related announcement CPP indicated it had taken a 39 per cent stake in Dorna Sports, an event management, media, and marketing company. Dorna Sports has global rights to the MotoGP motorcycle racing series until 2036.

"We look forward to working together with Dorna’s CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, his management team and Bridgepoint to continue Dorna’s global growth and to pursue exciting opportunities to expand into emerging markets," said Andre Bourbonnais, a vice-president with CPP's private investments unit.

More About MotoGP: With an unrivalled 62-year history of elite competition, MotoGP is the world’s premier motorcycling championship, comprising an 9-month, 18-round season, in 13 different countries, spanning 4 continents. Dating back to 1949, it is the oldest motorsport World Championship in existence.  Each Grand Prix brings together the most talented riders from across the world, to participate in races across three distinct categories - MotoGP, Moto2 & Moto3

Motorized 4 wheelers may get the nod for road use in Canada

The Canadian government is said to be considering allowing the sale of "motor quadricycles", essentially motorized four-wheelers, for on-road use.

A public consultation paper is to be published that considers the importation and distribution of motor quadricycles for on-road use in Canada. During a 30-day comment period, Canadians can submit opinions on amending the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations to allow quadricycles to be imported and manufactured for sale in Canada.

If there is sufficient interest, the government would propose a new vehicle class because current regulations require than four wheeled vehicle would have to meet the Federal regulatory requirements of a passenger car or low-speed vehicle.

The provinces and territories would separately determine whether they'd allow motor quadricycles on their roads, and would be responsible for operator training, licensing requirements, and enforcement of their own road use legislation.

The Notice of Intent can be found in the Canada Gazette under May 8, 2010 in Part One.  Look for the section starting with "Department of Transport."  It's right around page 40 of 152 on the PDF at the link.

In 2006 the US NHTSA was petitioned to broaden the federal definition of motorcycle to include motorized quadricycles designed for on-road use. It denied the petition.  So don't get your hopes up too high.  If you want to ride a motorized quadricycle, you'll still have to go to Europe.

They're looking for opinions from Canadians on this (in writing) before June 11th, 2010.  There's a few specific areas they're requesting comments on.  They're a bit lengthy but check out the link provided above and you'll see them.

Here's a snippit from the publication:

Comments, questions, and requests for additional information regarding this Notice may be directed to Denis Brault, Senior Regulatory Development Engineer, Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate, ASFBE, Transport Canada 275 Slater Street, 16th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N5, denis.brault@tc.gc.ca (email).

Have a Konker? Ride it 'a lot' and win a spare!

Konker Motors, the BC based provider of the KSM 200 street bike is holding a contest whereby owners can win parts cash (individual prizes valued at $200 and a total of $3,200), an accessory package (valued at $1,500), or the top prize - a 2009 KSM 200 street bike.

If you don't already own a Konker - you can still get in on the contest. Non-owners can tell Konker who they think will win the race, have the most miles, and estimate the number of kilometers they ride; then they pick up $200 in Konker Parts Cash.

Maybe they can sell it at a discount to the people who actually own a Konker to put the parts on?

For more news and background on Konker and their Super Moto check out our Konker category HERE.

Two Harley's in the Great White North

European Harley Davidson specialists' W&W Cycles from Germany took on an unusual challenge recently. Their motorcycles of choice - a 1948 Panhead and custom 2006-model Shovelhead.

The challenge - they rode the bikes up the ice road to Tuktoyaktuk, in Canada’s Northwest Territories. The resulting photo essay is quite remarkable. -57 celsius at points with wind chill! -35 without.

Yes, folks that's cold - even for Canadian's!

Check out the full photo essay HERE.
