Heated riding gear from Harley Davidson

Conquer the cold and extend the riding days with new 12 V Dual-Source heated gear from the Harley-Davidson MotorClothes apparel line. An array of new men’s and women’s liners, gloves, jackets, and pants deliver the maximum 12 V of heat via two sources: a rechargeable lithium ion battery or a motorcycle’s electrical system. Designed specifically for riders, all of the products feature a separate, built-in temperature controller with three distinct colour-coded heat levels. To enhance performance, Microwire technology provides the thinnest, lightest wiring system with the fastest warmth. Each new heated item offers a three-year warranty.

These are some of the new Dual-Source 12 V heated gear options from Harley-Davidson Motor Company:
Stay warm to the core with the men’s Heated Dual-Source 12 V Jacket Liner (P/N 98330-15VM). The five-panel system concentrates heat in the sleeves, chest, and back for optimal performance. The liner can be powered by the bike’s 12 V electrical system or a 12 V lithium rechargeable battery. For maximum mid-layer performance with minimal bulk, the liner is made from polyester with spandex and fleece. It is available in sizes S – 3XL.

Maintain maximum comfort, dexterity, and control with the new men’s Heated Dual-Source 12 V Gloves (P/N 98328-15VM). The gloves are made from leather and textile with tricot fleece lining and a waterproof, breathable liner. Pre-curved fingers, power-stretch knuckles, and gel-padded palms deliver maximum riding comfort. The heated gloves are powered through the bike’s 12 V electrical system via the heated liner or a pair of accessory 12 V lithium rechargeable batteries. The built-in three-level temperature controller system allows a rider to control the individual temperature level of each glove. Available in sizes S – 3XL.

Feel the heat and ride longer with the new women’s Heated Dual-Source 12 V Jacket Liner (P/N 98338-15VW). It features a built-in temperature controller with three heat settings and a five-panel heating system: two sleeve, two chest and one back panel. Constructed from four-way stretch polyester with spandex and fleece, the liner works best as a bulk-free mid-layer, yet can also be worn as a jacket. It connects to the bike’s 12 V electrical system or an accessory 12 V lithium ion rechargeable battery. Available in sizes XS – 2XL.

Ride in confidence and warmth with the new women’s Heated Dual-Source 12 V Gloves (P/N 98339-15VW). Alpinestars' Tech-Air™ Street Airbag System

Alpinestars has presented its Tech-Air™ street airbag system for road riding and off road adventure touring in a special media event at a crash test research facility near Milan, Italy.

The main feature of the event was a live, full-scale crash demonstration held in front of assembled journalists and VIP guests. The Tech-Air™ System was fitted on a crash dummy seated on a BMW GS 1200 which impacted a saloon car at 48 kilometers per hour. Tech-Air™ detected the impact and deployed the airbag within 59 milliseconds, the expected performance. Full inflation of the airbag took 25 milliseconds. The first rider contact with the car was recorded at 121 milliseconds.

Following the crash slow motion footage was shown to the audience demonstrating that full inflation had taken place before the rider made contact with the vehicle.

The Tech-Air™ airbag system and compatible outer jackets will be available for purchase in the Spring of 2015.

ALPINESTARS’ TECH-AIR™ STREET AIRBAG SYSTEM

Tech-Air™ is the world’s first self-contained airbag system that independently functions without the need for sensors to be installed on the bike and the subsequent need to link a specific motorcycle to the Tech-Air™ street airbag system used by the rider. This means that Tech-Air™ offers the freedom to ride any bike on any surface at any time.

Offering instantaneous, high-pressure inflatable protection the Tech-Air™ street airbag system gives the rider comprehensive protection in a crash by covering the full back, shoulders, kidney areas and chest.

The Tech-Air™ street airbag system is incorporated into a specially designed protection vest, which is then attached within and used in conjunction with a compatible outer jacket. For the initial airbag launch offering there are two jacket models available – an all-weather touring jacket and a summer street riding jacket – allowing the Tech-Air™ System to be used, interchangeably, in all weather conditions.

The benefits of the system are:

· Versatility: Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ street airbag system can be used with any type of motorcycle or scooter, allowing the rider to easily switch between bikes without reconfiguring or reinitializing the bike-to-rider set-up. The system is completely housed within the jacket and is self-contained, requiring no pre-configuration and is immediately ready for use. As a result, no sensors or equipment needs to be installed on the motorcycle and no time is wasted in setting up electronic pairing between rider and/or passenger and motorcycle.

· Any Type of Riding: Extensive research and testing has shown that a rider’s body remains relatively stable, regardless of terrain, until the point when an accident develops. The Tech-Air™ software algorithm is formulated to predict the impact, ensuring the airbag is deployed before the rider hits an obstacle. Therefore, by situating the sensors close to the rider’s body instead of on the bike, Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ can be used both on road or for off road adventure touring, and is equally effective on all types of terrain. There is no need to deactivate the system if leaving the road for off-road trails or to stop in between to change settings. Changing surfaces while adventure riding therefore presents no problem.

· Critical Protection Coverage: The Tech-Air™ street airbag system offers comprehensive upper body protection including back, shoulders, kidney area and chest, all of the most exposed areas during a street crash.

· Independent: By incorporating its sensors close to the rider’s body Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ street airbag system activates without the need for a triggering wireless signal to be sent from the bike.

· All-Weather Riding: The electronic unit is protected by a durable and water-resistant casing which, when worn under a compatible outer jacket, means the airbag system is fully weatherproof.

· No Installation: Tech-Air™ has no installation-to-bike requirements and subsequent cost and time-delay issue, eliminating the need for the bike to be specially fitted with sensors. With no equipment to be installed on the bike, the Tech-Air™ System is compatible with ANY motorcycle or scooter, regardless of make, age or type.

UNSURPASSED R&D AND PERFORMANCE

Following a decade of intensive research, development, hundreds of thousands of miles of road testing, a multitude of computer simulations and multiple full scale crash tests, the Tech-Air™ street airbag system typically detects an impact between 30-60 milliseconds (depending on accident type). Once fired Tech-Air™ will fully inflate in 25 milliseconds.

The Tech-Air™ street airbag system uses a sophisticated algorithm specifically developed for street riding to detect imminent danger with the greatest precision. Using Alpinestars’ exclusive custom analysis software the algorithm of Tech-Air™ has been optimized to detect crash impacts not only while riding but also in situations of loss of control, including when riding off road. This has been possible because Tech-Air™ shares common DNA in the algorithm from the Tech-Air™ race airbag system that features accident prediction and detects low-side crashes as well as high-sides for top MotoGP riders such as Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.

Additionally, Tech-Air™ provides protection when the rider is stationary, for example, a rear impact while waiting at traffic lights.

INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION

The Tech-Air™ street airbag is securely integrated into a removable and interchangeable breathable mesh vest that is worn under a compatible outer jacket. This allows for greater protection to the airbag system and componentry, increasing its lifespan and allowing the system to be used interchangeably with the compatible jacket of choice for the motorcycle type and weather outlook. For Tech-Air™ two compatible jacket models are available initially, the Valparaiso For Tech-Air™ and the Viper For Tech-Air™ textile jackets. The compatible outer jacket, which is designed to work with the airbag system, incorporates CE certified shoulder and elbow protection to further ramp its overall protective qualities. This outer jacket can be used as a stand-alone, without the Tech-Air™ System fitted internally.

PIECE-OF-MIND CONVENIENCE

The Tech-Air™ System is powered by a battery pack which offers over 25 hours of continuous use with one hour’s charging ensuring four hours of riding time. The system is activated simply by zipping up the jacket and riders can ensure the system is activated by checking the LED display located on the left sleeve. This feature is highly convenient, meaning riders can easily arm the airbag system without the need to locate a switch and can do so wearing gloves.

Tech-Air™ is the only airbag protection system conceived for the free spirit of motorcycling. No matter what bike you are riding and no matter the road surface and riding environment you experience – Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ is always there to protect.

Alpinestars launches ground-breaking Tech-Air Street Airbag

The Tech-Air™ is a groundbreaking electronic airbag system that offers riders upper body protection and the freedom to ride both on and off road and in a wide range of weather conditions. At the core of the Tech-Air™ is the protection vest, which incorporates the airbag’s electronic control unit, componentry and airbag. When inflated, the airbag covers the back, kidney areas, chest and shoulders. The Tech-Air™ protection vest, sold separately and completely self-contained, offers the possibility for the airbag to be used in conjunction with an Alpinestars airbag-compatible textile outer jacket, initially either the Valparaiso Tech-Air™or the Viper Tech-Air™, for superb protection in all-weather and warm weather riding conditions.

The innovative and versatile Tech-Air™ street airbag system can be used with any type of motorcycle and/or scooter without the need to set-up, pair or reconfigure bike-to-rider or bike-to-passenger settings. The system is therefore immediately ready to be used at any time for any bike on any surface, and can be used equally for road riding and off road adventure touring.

Knox Covert leather gloves with OutDry

Some gloves from Knox that won't make you look like a Starship Trooper!

Designed for summer riding the all-new Knox Covert glove features OutDry®, the latest in waterproofing technology which keeps the gloves thin and light, offering maximum feel and control.

Unlike standard waterproof inserts, the OutDry® membrane is bonded directly to the glove's shell. This prevents the build-up of water between the outer and inner layers as well as sealing stitching and joins, for a complete and durable waterproof finish.

OutDry® is also highly breathable, allowing perspiration to escape easily, and is windproof, reducing the effects of wind chill. Because the membrane is bonded directly to the shell, Covert are thinner than waterproof gloves with a separate membrane, giving the wearer greater feel and control. Stretch panels and box construction fingers aid dexterity too.

Made from tough yet supple Korean Cowhide, the palm and fingertips are reinforced with Pittards digital goat leather, with biofoam panels on the thumb, top of hand and outer wrist. Patented scaphoid protection is provided by low profile Knox SPS sliders.

Velcro(TM) and zip closure gives a secure fit; the latter is fully waterproof for extra protection against the elements.

Knox Covert Gloves are available in black, sizes S-XXL, at the suggested retail price of £99.99 including VAT.

Motorcycle Warning System device

We got an email from Giuseppe Pino Mileto - Inventor of the Motorcycle Warning System. He sent us a Press Release on the MWS which he believes has the potential to save thousands of lives.

It's a very nicely worded and official sounding Press Release but a couple problems with this system as far as I can see.  It relies greatly on the participation of 'other' motorists (non-motorcyclists) to purchase a device that has the most benefit for the motorcyclist.  It's going to be a tough sell.  Plus it warns you whenever a motorcycle is near you in a "threat range"  I doubt that motorists will want their car beeping and blinking at them whenever a motorcycle is near them.  That in itself might be a distration.

Read for yourself and feel free to comment:

Press Release:

With the goal of decreasing the number of traffic injuries and fatalities, Giuseppe Pino Mileto has invented the Motorcycle Warning System, a device to alert drivers of motorcycles in range of their vehicles, and most importantly, their blind spots. Once adopted, this new device could help eliminate thousands of accidents every year.

With the Motorcycle Warning System (MWS), a driver is made aware of one or more approaching motorcycles from any direction. A motorcycle equipped with a MWS unit will transmit its position, velocity, and a unique identification code to any automobile also equipped with a MWS unit. If a motorcycle is in a certain specified area called the "Threat Range," the MWS unit within the automobile will alert the driver via
  a light/sound indicator.

As soon as a motorcycle is in the Threat Range, the MWS light/sound indicator in the automobile will be triggered at a moderate rate. As the motorcycle approaches closer and is a number of meters away, the light/sound indicator will signal at a faster rate.

"Most motorcycle accidents can be avoided," notes Mileto. According to the Traffic Safety Center Hurt Study, 75% of motorcycle accidents result when other vehicles fail to detect motorcycles in time to avoid an accident.

Mileto adds, "Many countries have attempted to increase motorcycle safety and awareness. The U.K., Australia and the U.S. - just to mention a few - have focused their campaigns on motorists taking more time to look for motorcycles. Unfortunately the campaigns have yet to produce sufficient results."

"While significant progress has occurred in reducing fatalities among passenger vehicle occupants, motorcycle fatalities have been rising steadily since 1997, and currently represent our Nation's greatest highway traffic safety challenge." Mary E. Peters, U.S. Secretary of Transportation, U.S. Department of Transportation Action Plan to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities, 2007.

According to the Hurt Study, less than 10% of motorcycle riders carry insurance to cover medical care or property damage. Since most motorcycle accidents involve driver error on the part of automobile drivers, the costs land heavily on those drivers.

Moto2 Rider Noyes Chooses MICS System for Safety, TechSpec Gripsters for Control

Steve Reed, President of Lean Angle Canada, is honoured to announce that American-born Moto2 GP World Championship rider Kenny Noyes will be the first rider on the world stage to use and represent the TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads and the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for helmets.

Noyes is campaigning the 2011 Moto2 GP World Championship with Barcelona-based BQR team, on the FOGI Racing/FTR M211 machine provided by Canadian-based FOGI Racing owner, Angus Borland

American Geoff Maloney, of GP Tech, who worked with Borland in 2010, managed to bring Kenny and BQR together with FOGI Racing. FOGI Racing is a road racing development team that is quite successful in both Canada and the United States though their support of up-and-coming riders like 17-year old Canadian Ben Young, who is racing in the AMA Pro SuperSport Class this season.

Noyes, aboard his FTR M211 bike in Avintia-STX colors, will once again be the only US rider in the Moto2 GP class. This will be a homecoming for Noyes as he began his road racing career in Spain with BQR back in 2001.

In 2010, Noyes was one of ten "true rookies" among the full-time riders in the forty bike Moto2 GP field and his two seventh place finishes were the two best individual results achieved by a first-time GP rider in the new Moto2 class. Noyes’ highlight of the season was when he took the pole at Le Mans, one of fourteen new tracks that he had to learn over the 17-race Moto2 GP season.

Noyes is getting a grip on his new FOGI Racing/FTR M211 machine with a set of TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads. The tank pads are engineered to improve control, enhance body positioning, reduce fatigue, and protect the rider’s tank and bodywork without damaging the rider’s leathers or man made fabrics. TechSpec Gripsters feature a proprietary “releasable and reusable” adhesive allowing a rider to fine tune the location of the grip surface or to temporarily remove them when tank repairs may be required.

The two by one inch MICS that Noyes is wearing this season, on his HJC helmet, provides paramedics and other trained emergency personnel with potentially life-saving information about the rider's identity and critical medical details. On the outside of the pouch, in bold text, is a warning to non-medical good Samaritans to not remove the downed rider’s helmet and to leave that critical task to trained medical responders. Improper helmet removal is a leading cause of collateral paralysis and death and should only be undertaken by trained EMS or medical staff.

"I'm proud to be the first global ambassador for the Medical Information Carrier System." said Noyes. "With the sheer number of people riding motorcycles around the world you know that there are many instances where unfortunate outcomes would be avoided if riders had only had a MICS on their helmets. I want to help get the word out so that street riders know about MICS and ask their local bike shop to stock them."

“I look forward to leveraging the full benefits of the TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads” added Noyes. “Everyone is extremely competitive these days and the Gripsters will help me gain additional control on my bike.”

Lean Angle Canada and Tech Spec USA encourage motorcycle enthusiasts to follow Noyes’ season at www.kennynoyes.com, on Facebook, on Twitter at http://twitter.com/KennyNoyes and at www.leanangle.ca. You can also pick up a copy of Roadracing World magazine to read Kenny Noyes’ up coming column.

“It’s such a pleasure and an honour to have the support of such a talented rider like Kenny to help us launch and promote the MICS message throughout world.” said Steve Reed, President of Lean Angle Canada. “A rider of Kenny’s caliber understands more than most what the value of a few precious seconds can mean. I know he is going to be game on out there on the track and I look forward to seeing him tear it up on his Gripster equipped FTR.”

TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads and MICS are available at an ever expanding network of powersports dealers across North America. MICS will soon be available at dealers and retail locations throughout Europe. MICS are a mandatory safety device at the Canadian Superbike Series.

Gripsters are engineered to improve control and technique on a variety of powersports machines including motocross and enduro motorcycles as well as ATVs. The TechSpec Gripster grip pads have also been proven to enhance body positioning, reduce fatigue, and protects a rider’s tank or body work without harming their gear. The proprietary "Releasable/Reusable" adhesive ensures that riders can remove, adjust and reposition the grip pads to suit their particular riding style.

In conjunction with the introduction of TechSpec Gripster grip pads to the Canadian Motocross scene, through Liam’s sponsorship, Lean Angle Canada is extremely proud to announce that the retail price of the pad kits will be reduced effective February 14th, 2011. Customers will need to contact their local dealer to find out how much they are going to save.

“A combination of a stronger Canadian dollar and benefits realized from the HST has allowed us to pass on savings to the people who matter the most to us; the Canadian motorcycle rider. By reducing our pricing on Gripster grip pads Lean Angle and our valued dealers anticipate that now, more than ever, all riders will be able to experience the benefits of our pads.” stated Steve Reed, President, Lean Angle Canada. “Ultimately it will also benefit our dealers who are at the very heart and soul of the motorcycle community. They add value to the product, are the face of the industry to the customer and important to their local economies.”

Lean Angle Canada hopes that everyone will join them in and cheering on Liam this season and are extremely proud to have such a great racer as an ambassador of the TechSpec brand.

“The product feels amazing, it is strong and gives great grip on the bike, allowing me to have more control of my bike.” said O'Farrell “I'm really looking forward to riding for TechSpec and representing this great product for the 2011 season.”

Lean Angle Presents Lee Kuhn Jr with Cheque from MICS Campaign

Steve Reed, president of Lean Angle Canada, the exclusive global distributor of the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for wearers of powersport helmets, recently presented a cheque to sponsored rider Lee Kuhn Jr. at the Inside Motorcycle booth at the 2010 Toronto Motorcycle Show held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Kuhn, a competitor in the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship Amateur 600 Sport Bike class, was featured in an Inside Motorcycles magazine article that struck a cord with the staff at Lean Angle Canada this past summer.

The Hamilton-based racer is not only a top-level amateur competitor in Canada’s premier motorcycle road racing series, but is also a student at Trillium College's Paramedicine program. This past spring, Kuhn was flagged down by a fellow racer shortly after leaving the Circuit ICAR race track,  just north of Montreal, where he put his new skills to good use by assisting a downed rider just outside the facility.

Steve Reed, after reading the story by John Hopkins of Inside Motorcycle in the  July/August 2010 edition of the magazine, was inspired by Kuhn's desire to assist those in need. The Lean Angle team developed a campaign to assist Kuhn with his tuition by donating $1.00 of each $3.00 Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) helmet system sold through the leanangle.ca website and at the track in the months of August, September, October and November.

The Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) warns non-medical bystanders not to remove a rider’s helmet and provides paramedics and other trained emergency personnel with life-saving information about the rider's identity and medical history.

Reed, was recently able to connect with Kuhn to thank him in person and presented him with a cheque for Three Hundred dollars at the Inside Motorcycle “Winner’s Circle” booth at the 2010 Toronto Motorcycle Show.

“Lee’s educational background, especially his helmet removal training course, has helped him become an ideal ambassador for the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) helmet system and for rider safety. We’re extremely proud to do our small part to assist Lee with furthering his education and his future racing endeavors.” said Steve Reed, President of Lean Angle Canada.

“It’s been an honour to assist Lean Angle in getting the word out about the Medical Information Carrier System for helmets and I can’t thank them enough for their continued support!” stated Kuhn. “EMS personnel are trained to look for this sort of medical information carrier. Having critical medical information at hand gives first responders the edge and can save precious seconds when it really counts."

The Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for helmets is currently available at an ever-growing network of dealers, online powersport accessory retailers across Canada and is currently used at Shannonville Motorsport Park’s RACE racing series and will be implemented this coming season at the FAST Riding School.

LED Wear for motorcyclists

I was attending a motorcycle show and came across a vendor selling some kind of interesting high-visibility clothing that could be used by motorcyclists that I thought I'd pass along.

It's a company called LED-Wear. They're website is LEDWear.ca and the person I spoke with was from Halifax, Nova Scotia.  They're website indicates that they're the Canadian and US distributor for the products.

The products seem a little more popular in other more highly populated places like the UK but I've been seeing more and more riders choosing equipment that increases their conspicuity on the road; wearing full white, or yellow helmets, and reflective vests over their jackets - those sorts of things

I don't know that the event that I went to was the best forum for the company as I heard a few folks kind of joking that they'd look like aliens on the road if they were wearing that sort of outfit.  I think that if some well placed LED lighting helps makes you more noticeable on the road then that's a good idea.

I would be curious to know about any legal implications of wearing blinking LED vests and such on Canadian roads though. Might have to look into that! Or send off an email to the company.

Lean Angle Donates Portion of MICS Helmet System Sales

Lean Angle (leanangle.ca), the exclusive Canadian distributor of the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for wearers of motorcycle, automotive, and other powersport helmets, is honoured to announce a campaign to give back to a rider who is being educated to help others.

After reading an article in the current issue of Inside Motorcycles by motorcycle journalist John Hopkins, Lean Angle, the Canadian distributor for TechSpec Grip Pads, has learned how one of its sponsored riders, Lee Kuhn Jr. took the time to assist an injured motorcyclist on his way home after a race weekend at Circuit Icar, just north of Montreal.

Kuhn, a competitor in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Amateur 600 Sport Bike class and a student at Trillium College's (Hamilton ON) Paramedic program, was flagged down by a fellow racer shortly after leaving the racetrack. Upon arriving at the scene, Kuhn discovered that a race enthusiast leaving the same track had apparently high-sided his motorcycle over the guardrail.

The Hamilton-based racer's training kicked in - Kuhn immediately grabbed the first-aid kit and assessed the situation. When he saw that untrained bystanders were attempting to remove the downed rider's helmet, he immediately advised them to leave the helmet in place due to the high potential for the rider to be paralyzed by the good samaritans' actions.

Lean Angle recently announced they are now the exclusive Canadian distributor of the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS). This system would have informed the non-medical bystanders to NOT remove the helmet and would have provided paramedics and other trained emergency personnel with life-saving information about the rider's identity and medical history.

"The MICS helmet safety system was developed to assist trained first responders in this exact situation," says Steve Reed, President of Lean Angle. "Lee's training, specifically the helmet removal course he took as part of his Paramedicine program, was instrumental in ensuring that this rider was not subject to further injuries by well-meaning bystanders."

Lean Angle was inspired by Kuhn's desire to assist those in need - not only on that day, but in the future - through his decision to become a Paramedic. Lean Angle is proud to announce that for the months of August, September and October, $1.00 of each $2.99 MICS helmet system sold through its website www.LeanAngle.ca will be donated to assist with Kuhn's tuition.

Additional opportunities to support Kuhn through the purchase of the MICS helmet system are available in Kuhn's paddock at the upcoming Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Atlantic Motorsport Park, Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia on August 6-8, 2010.

"The motorcycling community and racers have a long history of reaching out to those in need and Lean Angle is proud to be a member of this caring group of people. Lee is not only a driven and dedicated competitor, he has also been a great ambassador for TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads, his other sponsors, and the sport as a whole.

We are proud to be associated with Lee and the entire Kuhn family and we wish to do our small part to recognize his efforts on and off the track and to ensure he can fulfill his dream of becoming a paramedic." states Reed.

The Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for helmets is currently available online at www.leanangle.ca and at an ever-growing network of dealers and online powersport accessory retailers across Canada.

Lean Angle Becomes Canadian Distributor of Helmet Medical Information Carrier System

Lean Angle (leanangle.ca), the exclusive Canadian distributor of TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads, is pleased to announce that it is now the exclusive Canadian distributor of the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for wearers of motorcycle, automotive, and other powersport helmets.

This simple yet extremely important helmet safety system was developed to meet the needs of all motorsports competitors and enthusiasts utilizing protective headgear.

"It is a privilege to have Lean Angle on the MEDS 'Make your helmet a Lifesaver!' Team as our global MICS distributor (excluding USA and South Africa) so together we can help promote safe riding." stated Dr. Lou Gaston, inventor of the device.

The 1 by 2 inch carrier is located universally on the left rear of the motorcycle helmet. It is protected, yet quite visible, and readily available. Directions on the carrier inform non-medical bystanders NOT to remove the helmet.

Inside the carrier is the location of the medical information data form. Users simply use a pencil to print info on the medical data form. This completed form is waterproof and difficult to tear, ideal for high energy activities.

?In the event of an emergency this simple and effective system will quickly provide life-saving information about the wearer's identity and medical history to paramedics and other trained emergency personnel.? said Steve Reed, President of Lean Angle.

Currently there are over 800,000 carriers in use world-wide. Sportbike enthusiasts and racers have acknowledged the benefits of the Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for helmets. Toronto-based Pro 6 Cycle will be the first trackday organizer to provide all their trackday riders with the MICS helmet system. And, Pro Canadian superbike racer Andrew Nelson, who knows the importance of precious seconds, will be wearing the MICS helmet safety system on his helmet for the balance of the 2010 season.

The Medical Information Carrier System (MICS) for helmets is currently available online at www.leanangle.ca and at an ever-growing network of dealers and online powersport accessory retailers across Canada.

BMW Motorrad Communication System also available for BMW Motorrad Helmet Sport.

BMW Motorrad has expanded the application spectrum of its Bluetooth communication system and now offers it with its BMW Motorrad Sport helmet.

The Sport helmet is already designed for immediate integration of the BMW Motorrad Communication System. With its excellent aerodynamics and exceptional aeroacoustics, it is perfectly suited to the new communications system and its outstanding sound quality. The system employs Bluetooth standard 2.0 to allow wireless voice communication between two helmets as well as other Bluetooth equipment, such as navigation systems, mobile telephones, or MP3 players.

The BMW Motorrad Communication System comprises a main circuit board, a boom microphone, and two loudspeakers which are installed in the helmet, plus two NiMH rechargeable batteries, which enable constant operation for periods of ten to twelve hours. The system is controlled by a three-button module, which fits snugly into any Sport helmet, irrespective of the shell's dimensions.

The BMW Motorrad Communication System has been conceived to facilitate voice communication between the rider and co-rider, but communication with other Bluetooth equipment is also possible. For instance, the rider can not only talk to his co-rider, but is also able to receive messages emitted by the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV, make telephone calls, or listen to music, provided the equipment used is Bluetooth-compatible. The BMW Motorrad Communication System also allows communication from motorcycle to motorcycle. Depending on the local conditions, the system will allow voice communication over a distance of up to 100 metres with only a slight drop in quality, provided there is an uninterrupted line of sight between the Bluetooth devices. If the distance cannot be bridged or the conditions are otherwise unfavourable, and the connection is lost, it is automatically restored as soon as the distance between the Bluetooth transmitters is sufficiently small.

The BMW Motorrad Communication System in the Sport Helmet is compatible with the communication system in the BMW Motorrad System 6 Helmet.

Stay cool as a cucumber - with your own air conditioner!

Imagine it - you're riding to work on a hot summer day and all of the sudden - Bam! You're in a traffic jam. Rather than feeling the wind and cool breezes you're stuck in the heat - hot, stifling, heat - sweat starts to form on your brow when you remember... Hey, I've got my Entrosys air conditioner!

Yes, there really is such a product. Doubt there will be huge market for them up here in Canada but it's an interesting product. Use it if you think you can handle the ribbing you're going to get from your buddies if you do! Look's like they're offering a factory rebate of 20% if you purchase it now - before it becomes available for purchase.

It does look ultra portable, and they say you can also use it as a heater too.

Seems like the folks over at Corazzo not only make some stylish scooter (and motorcycle) performance gear but they've got a wild side and like to have some fun too it seems!

Watch this clip and check out how their gear holds up when it's drug across the pavement. Impressive.

Corazzo is a company we've mentioned before, that's based in Portland but does have some of their products made right here in Canada.

Cardo will design a communication system for Schuberth flip-up helmets

Schuberth GmbH, the German producer of high-end head protection and Cardo Systems Inc., the Pittsburgh based market leader in Bluetooth communication systems for motorcycle helmets (scala rider), announced the signing of a cooperation agreement, according to which Cardo will design and manufacture a unique communication and entertainment system for the Schuberth C3, C2 and Concept motorcycle flip-up helmets. The new and patented system which can be easily adapted to these helmets will be launched in 2009.

Besides connectivity with mobile phones, bike-to-bike intercom between up to 3 rider and wireless receipt of stereo music from compatible MP3 players, no further technical information about the system was provided. At this point also the name of the new system is still being kept confidential. Schuberth’s executives described their new system not only technologically as cutting edge, but also as a radically new approach in retrofitting communication systems to motorcycle helmets, blurring the line between built-in headsets and after-market solutions.

The new system will be offered first for Schuberth flip-up helmets and can be installed within minutes by any end-user. Schuberth plans to present the system this year, possibly at the EICMA motorcycle trade show in Milan, Italy.

Marcel Lejeune, CEO of Schuberth GmbH remarked: “Our collaboration with Cardo is meant to equip the world's finest motorcycle helmets with the best available communication and entertainment system. The new system represents the synthesis between our unrelenting pursuit of safety, intuitive ergonomics and cutting-edge technology. This product will meet an important customer demand for a smart and mature all-round solution to complement our premium helmets".

Dr. Abraham Glezerman, Chairman of Cardo Systems added: “Working with Schuberth gives us a welcome opportunity to provide a high-end solution to a sophisticated clientele that is used to very high standards. Everything we have learned in years of research, development and market requirements will be brought to bear in the Schuberth communication system."

BMW DoubleR collection uncompromisingly sporty

The time has finally come: once more BMW is playing an important role in motorcycle road racing. Fittingly, riders with professional racing ambitions will find that the new DoubleR collection is a complete, tailor-made range of rider`s equipment, produced with only the finest materials and to a high level of manufacturing excellence. The products' designs consciously reveal their close affinity to motorsport: just as much attention has been given to their look and comfort as to such factors as safety and a love of detail.

The DoubleR collection comprises a leather suit, helmet, boots and gloves. Together they make up a complete outfit, which is ideal not only for riders of the new supersports bike, the BMW S 1000 RR, but also for all other ambitious riders.

For the helmet and boots, existing successful products were taken and their design enhanced yet further, while the suit and gloves are completely new product developments. The DoubleR collection will be presented at the EICMA international motorcycle show in Milan this coming November.

DoubleR Suit – Superbike performance for the road.

The one-piece racing suit in BMW Motorrad motorsport design is made of highly wear-resistant kangaroo leather, only 1.0 millimetre thick, making it 20% lighter than regular suits made of calf leather. It is also notable for its skin-tight fit.

The DoubleR suit is extremely pleasant to wear while also providing a very high level of active safety. The integrated and non-removable NP protectors at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees offer a high degree of protection and are extremely effective in absorbing impacts.

The extended-length, removable back protector is anatomically formed in 3D to provide a wide area of protection and enhanced safety for the spine, shoulder blades and kidneys.

The collarbone is additionally protected by an integrated impact-absorbent material. The new, plastic-injected, INOX stainless steel shoulder and elbow sliders distribute the force peaks to the underlying protectors and facilitate sliding in the event of a fall. Replaceable standard-production sliders made of hard plastic are employed in the knee areas. A zip is also provided for integrating the BMW Neck Brace System.

The torso, sleeves and legs of the suit are strongly preformed in line with standard racing posture, while the hump, which is a typical feature for this segment, has the effect of improving aerodynamics. The perforated leather areas, together with the TFL® cool coating of the black leather, prevent the suit from becoming excessively hot in high temperatures. At low temperatures, the windblocker undervest, supplied with the suit, can be used to protect the rider from the cold. The pre-fitted knee sliders are supplied as standard, as is a high-quality suit bag.

The DoubleR suit will be available in the colour combinations blue/white/red and black/white/red.

DoubleR Helmet – consistent coordination work.

The DoubleR helmet has been developed from the Sport helmet model. The classic design employs the BMW Motorrad motorsports colours of blue/white/red, making it the perfect match for the DoubleR collection.

The extra spoiler, which is especially constructed to maximise the aerodynamic properties of the BMW S 1000 RR and its narrow windshield, offers increased stability at high speeds.

DoubleR Boots – design enhanced by professionals.

The DoubleR boots are an enhanced design of the existing, professionally featured Sport boots and which have been especially developed for riders intending to employ the BMW S 1000 RR for sports use. The new features include large hook-and-loop-fastender inside zip covers for simplifying foot insertion. The blue nylon soles have been reinforced and refashioned to match the metal footrests of the S 1000 RR. The new boots will be available in the colour combination white/black.

DoubleR Gloves – safety meets comfort.

The DoubleR gloves are of a completely new design and made of 100% kangaroo leather. To improve its protective properties, the palm material is partially doubled and fitted with a Kevlar® underlay. The more at-risk zones are fitted with impact-absorbing Suprotect® foam in varying thicknesses.

Also, stingray leather is incorporated in the hand edges. This is a natural material with a strong inherent structure and combines the great safety of leather with the comfort of modern textiles. The stingray leather's grainy structure has several benefits: it slides well without becoming hot, it is extremely wear-resistant, and although it has hard spots, it is in itself quite flexible.

A finger bridge reinforced with Kevlar® protects the little finger in the event of a fall, while the wrist is protected by an anatomically formed hard-plastic shell in BMW Motorrad design.

The strongly pre-curved cut guarantees a fold-free fit. The knuckle shell, made of GFK, is made in three different sizes, for an improved fit. Stretch material is incorporated underneath the hard shell and the leather stretch inserts at the bottom of the fingers increase their agility.

The DoubleR gloves will be available in black and in the classic BMW Motorrad motorsport colours of blue/white/red.

BMW Motorrad Navigator IV – More Speed, More Functions and More Power

The original now enters its second generation. From now on, riding along unknown roads will be even more simple, safe and relaxing, thanks to the new BMW Motorrad Navigator IV.

Featuring a 16:9 touchscreen which, at 4.3 inches, is bigger than its predecessor, and an improved satellite receiver, in combination with a faster processor for working out routes even more quickly. More than ever before, the new model is much easier to operate while wearing motorcycle gloves. The BMW Motorrad Navigator IV has a flatter housing, extra-large touchscreen buttons, and four additional operating buttons on the left-hand side of the exclusive Advanced Mount Cradle. In this way, the robust Navigator combines extremely simple operation with an excellent range of functions.

Looking at the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV in more detail, the optimised user interface displays a number of new software functions, such as lane assist, junction view, and 3D buildings. There are two separate data fields which can be used to custom-configure the displayed map section, with information such as arrival time, remaining journey time, average speed, direction of travel, and current altitude.

The BMW Motorrad Navigator IV transmits its instructions via Bluetooth to a specially equipped helmet or via loudspeaker if used in a car. All road names are stated (text-to-speech) which increases road safety, as the operator does not need to take his eyes off the road. The BMW Motorrad Navigator IV supports a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled mobile telephones, allowing motorcycle riders to accept or make calls directly via the display of the Navigator. The new motorcycle Navigator is also an effective music player, thanks to its highly developed, integrated MP3 system, the A2DP profile for transmitting the music signal in stereo to the Bluetooth helmet, and the memory capacity, which has now been doubled to four gigabytes.

The waterproof unit contains preinstalled map data for 40 west and East-European countries, including more than 1.5 million points of interest. The unit is supplied with the MapSource (TM) route planning software, to allow the riders to plan his journey at his convenience on his home computer. The routes can then be transferred to the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV and viewed after the trip in MapSource(TM) or Google Earth, as the system automatically records the route taken. A slot for microSD memory cards is included for loading additional map data. It is also possible to exchange routes and waypoints with other Navigator IV units. Data can be exchanged via memory card or Bluetooth.

The BMW Motorrad Navigator IV is easy to install on all models of BMW Motorrad motorcycles with a standard accessories connector, using the model-specific mounting. This means that the new navigation system can be used with the majority of current F, R and K series motorcycles. A car kit is available as an optional extra. The powerful Navigator performs just as well in a car as it does on a motorcycle. In addition, when used in a car, the flexible navigator system can also be used a hands-free telephone adapter for Bluetooth-enabled mobile telephones, thanks to its integrated loudspeaker and microphone.

Another new feature of the BMW Motorrad Navigator IV is that it can also be operated away from the vehicle. It is fitted with an integrated lithium-ion battery which allows up to five hours of operating time. It is therefore possible to programme the unit or work out routes during breaks or even use it as a completely self-contained path finder when out cycling or hiking.

The BMW Motorrad Navigator IV will be available from August 2009.

AGV SPORT licensing Announcement

I haven't seen the AGV brand of helmets around at shops on the East Coast (Canada) but a bit of searching seems to suggest that plenty of Canadians are wearing them. They can be ordered in at many shops. They're just not broadly distributed in Canada - or at least it would seem. They do make some beautiful looking helmets.

Press Release after the break...

AGV SPORTS GROUP, INC. has announced and exclusive licensing agreement with MotoNation LLC and marks their 25th anniversary.

“Products designed by riders for riders” AGV Sports Group, Inc., one of the oldest-owned and operated apparel companies in the motorcycle industry, is announcing that a long term and exclusive licensing agreement has been signed with El Cajon based Motonation.

AGV Sport and Motonation believe that this strategic alliance and partnership will benefit both companies and allow for rapid development of new products for the US market. AGV Sport believed strongly that Motonation was the right choice for the future of this historic brand and to extend its 25 year commitment to producing technically superior products.

Motonation has a unique business model of marketing its exclusive product lines through committed partnerships with a limited number of select retailers combined with an aggressive promotional investment that enable the lines to grow in this competitive market. Motonation is now hard at work on its 2010 AGV Sport product line which will start to show up at Motonation’s Partner retailers late in 2009.

As summer heats up Corazzo brings thoughts of cooler times

Corazzo, a maker of some fine looking scooter and motorcycle garments is thinking ahead to cooler times and just came out with a couple Limited Edition "Club Sweaters." I don't want to think of cooler months just yet, but these sweaters should make riding in the cooler evenings and late summer days more enjoyable.

We told you a little bit about Corazzo before, they're a Portland Oregon based company but many of their products are made in Canada and available at finer Vespa dealerships.

They've got the "Rocker" which is made of custom dyed American made wool, features an extra wide waist band to keep it from riding up when you're on the road. Some other nice touches are the Napa leather letters spelling Corazzo across the chest, large leather elbow patches, a zip up collar that beats back the cold mornings, and thumb holes to ensure the sleeves stay tucked in."

Then there's the "Tricolore" which is designed in a raglan style, with sleeves knitted lengthwise for a comfortable fit. The zip collar and thumb holes keep out the cold. There's a small Corazzo chest patch and tri color stripes knit on the right sleeve.

For ordering details check out Corazzo's website. The Tricolore is listed at $249USD while the Rocker is $275USD.

In conducting the 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study, which measures the overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet in three key factors: ventilation, face shield, and design and styling, J.D. Power and Associates asked owners to rate the following 11 attributes of their motorcycle helmet:

  • quietness;
  • ventilation/air flow;
  • de-fogging;
  • face shield ability to keep wind out;
  • face shield ability to resist scratching;
  • ease of replacing face shield;
  • scratch resistance of shell;
  • color/graphic design;
  • weight;
  • ease of fastening the strap;
  • fit and comfort.

More than 4,600 survey responses were tabulated. With a score of 830, Arai ranks highest among the 10 helmet brands included in the study—its 11th consecutive year leading the rankings.

“Arai’s focus on fit and comfort—the most important consideration when purchasing a motorcycle helmet—and its ability to cater to different types of riders have given the manufacturer a consistent edge in satisfying customers,” said Tim Fox, research manager of the powersports group at J.D. Power and Associates.

Other highlights from the 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study include:

  • Arai, the highest-ranked helmet maker, improves its index score by 11 points compared to last year’s study, and performs particularly well in the ventilation and design and styling factors.
  • Shoei ranks second with a score of 815 and performs well in the face shield factor. Icon ranks third overall with a score of 806.
  • While the percentage of helmet owners who conducted research online before buying has remained relatively steady from 2008 at 36 percent, more and more consumers are buying their helmets online—17 percent in 2009, compared to 14 percent in 2008.
  • Those who purchased more expensive helmets ($200 or more) are more likely to both research and purchase their helmet online. Additionally, more than one-half of these helmet owners researched online prior to their purchase, and 22 percent of them made their purchase online.

About the Study

The 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 4,600 purchasers of new 2008 model-year motorcycles who provided information about their most recent helmet purchase experience and helmet use. The study was fielded in September and October 2008.

Portland, US company - Italian name - made in Canada!

During our latest trip to the local Vespa dealership we came across some pretty cool stuff. More on that in future, but for now we'll tempt you with a riding apparel company called Corazzo.

Trusty Google Translator indicates that Corazzo is Italian for armour. Seems fitting for a company making riding apparel and accessories. If all the skulls and crossbones gear at your local shop have you wondering if there's anything a little more stylish that will keep you looking stylish AND be protected, well - Corazzo is a company you might want to check out.

According to the Corazzo company website:

"Corazzo is proud to design and manufacture our garments and accessories in North America (California and Oregon and Canada), sourcing our raw materials from companies that manufacture in the US, whenever and wherever possible.

Corazzo uses the only the highest quality materials, like real Cordura~ fabric from DuPont, the best Scotchlite reflective material from 3M, YKK Zippers and armor from Knox, the world's leader in impact protection for two-wheeled riders.
"

We've not had the opportunity to test any of the products, seeing as we've just discovered the company, but they do appear to be well made stuff that makes use of quality materials. The friendly shop owners brewed me a coffee while I had a look at all the treasures in the shop. I'm told the Corazzo Under-Hoody is particularly irresistible. Certainly looks like it'd be comfortable on a chilly morning ride!

New BMW clothing mimics pine cone principle

Yes, you read it right. - Pine cones.

BMW has just come out with a new riding suit, the Streetguard 3 to replace their Streetguard 2. The Streetguard 3 features fabric that mimics the principle of a pine cone, whose scales open and close in response to heat and cold. The technology is dubbed "c_change™" and it is said to "breath" in the summer and insulate in cold weather.

Well, when put that way, it does appeal to my inner technology lover!

Not only that though, it suit also has what BMW calls the "coldblack®" feature on the outside. Coldblack® causes 80 percent of sunlight to be reflected off the black surfaces. Protecting you from heat and UV radiation - the suit also remains cool for longer even in bright sunshine, which will undoubtedly make riding with all your gear on when it's 35 degrees celsius in stop and go traffic a whole lot more bearable.

It sounds like some pretty amazing stuff. It doesn't come cheap, the Streetguard 3 will have an MSRP of $1,033.50 for the jacket and $807.50 for the pants, but it does sound like it could be "the" gear to have. Sizes and cuts specifically for men, or women, are available.

Press Release with full details follow:

03/05/2009

Munich/Whitby. Arriving just in time for the start of the new season this spring, the Streetguard 3 suit is to replace its predecessor, the Streetguard 2, offering new safety features and improved comfort for the wearer.
The new Streetguard 3 suit is equipped with the latest safety and comfort features from Swiss textile manufacturer schoeller®, guaranteeing perfectly coordinated functions. The external material is made from a new protective fabric developed exclusively with and for BMW Motorrad - schoeller®-keproshield™. The high-strength composite fabric with Kevlar, cotton and polyamide elements resulted in an increase in durability and toughness, resistance to tearing and frictional heat of about 20 percent in comparison with its predecessor.

In order to achieve maximum comfort for the wearer, the outer material is directly bonded to an inner water- and wind-proof c_change™-membrane. Nature provided the inspiration when the designers came to develop c_change™. Mimicking the principle of a pine cone, whose scales open and close in response to heat and cold, c_change™ "breathes" in the summer and insulates in cold weather. This makes the membrane very breathable, while its air-permeability enables it to adapt to the external temperature and the body temperature of the wearer. This guarantees the perfect body temperature whatever the weather. In addition, the membrane also offers an elasticity that enables a fully elastic outer shell to be constructed, ensuring even more comfort for the wearer. Thus kitted out, the rider can withstand wind and weather, while still looking good thanks to the fashionable cut.

But that's not all: for the first time, the suit also has the so-called coldblack® feature on the outside. This causes 80 percent of sunlight to be reflected off the black surfaces. This means that the body is effectively protected from heat and UV radiation - the suit also remains cool for longer even in bright sunshine, thus palpably increasing the comfort of the wearer.

The jacket has a single special zipper to the front (riri® storm) that keeps out wind, water and UV radiation effectively without resorting to the labyrinth construction used to date. Similar water-resistant special zippers (riri®AQUAzip) can also be found on the outside pockets. The jacket also has a detachable storm collar and practical sleeve cuffs for a water-proof transition to the gloves. If conditions are particularly frosty, the removable, high-quality 3M Thinsulate lining provides optimum insulation. In addition, a high waistband with fleece lining on the inside prevents unpleasant cold drafts.

The protectors provide yet another safety element. That's why the suit now comes complete with the NP protectors developed by BMW Motorrad with optimum shock-absorbing properties. These are located on the back, shoulders and elbows and at the hips and knees (knee protectors adjustable to three different heights). An optional coccyx protector can be added. To ensure that the rider is highly visible at all times, reflective fabric has been incorporated on the front, back and on the sides of the trouser legs.

The versions for men and women differ not only in their design, but also in their cut. The Streetguard 3 suit is available in black in ladies' sizes 36-46, 72-88, or 18-22 and in men's' sizes 46-66, 98-118, or 25-32. For additional combination options, the jacket is also available in a black/gray/orange color combination in men's sizes 46-60 and ladies' sizes 36-46.

The Streetguard 3 will have an MSRP of $1,033.50 for the jacket and $807.50 for the pants.
