Harley-Davidson Plans Direct Distribution to Independent Dealers In Canada
As part of its global growth strategy, Harley-Davidson has largely migrated to a globally consistent model of direct distribution to independently owned dealers and, in recent years, has established direct distribution and operations in a number of its major markets including Brazil, Australia, Italy and the Scandinavian countries. Under direct distribution, the company manages sales to dealers, marketing, dealer recruitment and retail capabilities, consumer events and other aspects of its in-market activities, often through wholly-owned subsidiaries. Canada remains among the only markets operating through a third-party distributor arrangement.
“The contributions of the Deeley organization to Harley-Davidson’s customers and the business in Canada have been tremendous, and we have the highest regard for the entire Deeley team,” said Harley-Davidson North America Vice President and Managing Director Mike Kennedy. “Deeley has achieved a level of success that has made Canada one of the largest international Harley-Davidson markets over time. We have made this decision to transition to direct distribution in Canada after long and careful consideration, and solely growing out of our global business strategy. We will work closely with the Deeley organization as we finalize a roadmap for the future and look forward to leveraging the many opportunities to fulfill dreams of personal freedom for customers.”
“We have a long and proud relationship with Harley-Davidson, marked by Deeley’s commitment to excellence – to our associates, customers and retailers – and that will continue to be our priority throughout the transition,” said Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada President and Chief Operating Officer Malcolm Hunter. “It has been a true honour to be part of this business we have all built together. We have accomplished so much and are proud of Deeley’s legacy and our enduring contribution to motorcycling in Canada. The entire Deeley organization will work closely with Harley-Davidson to ensure a seamless transition and ensure that Canadian customers continue to enjoy an outstanding Harley-Davidson product, service and support experience. ”
Don James, co-founder and majority owner of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, currently serves as a director on the Harley-Davidson, Inc. board.
In Canada and globally, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and related products are retailed through a network of more than 1,460 independently owned dealerships.

Harley-Davidson Sturgis Plan 75-Year Agreement
“Harley-Davidson riders have attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for decades. This new agreement will help fuel many more years of freedom, independence, and rebellion for this iconic gathering,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer at Harley-Davidson. “Riding is a passion passed down through generations, so it’s important we celebrate the legacy and history of Harley-Davidson in Sturgis, while helping creating new memories.”
As part of the agreement, a permanent plaza will be built on Main Street in Sturgis that will include a stage for events, concerts, and even weddings. The year-round location, which will be completed in time for this year’s 75th Rally, will be the official Harley-Davidson® destination for riders and fans alike.
“For decades, Harley-Davidson has been the motorcycle of choice for Sturgis Motorcycle Rally fans and a great partner to the city of Sturgis,” said Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen. “Today it gives me great pleasure to solidify its importance by making it the official motorcycle of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.”
Sturgis: Baked into the bricks of Harley-Davidson
To ensure the new multi-purpose space builds on the legacy of the Brand and is pure Harley-Davidson, the plaza will integrate bricks from the company’s Milwaukee headquarters, a building that once housed the Company Factory dating back more than 100 years.
During a news conference at the Company headquarters, Harley-Davidson announced the planned agreement, which has an initial term and renewals running through 2090. To unveil the deal, Harley-Davidson removed a brick from the historic front entrance using a 2015 Harley-Davidson® Street™ 750 motorcycle. That brick, alongside one from the Harley-Davidson Museum™, and 73 bricks from the headquarters’ famous motorcycle-only parking area will be delivered to Sturgis on Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.
Whether riders are trapped inside for the winter or riding south toward warmer weather, now is the perfect time to plan a trip to the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The party starts August 1, 2015, and for those who have had Sturgis on a bucket list, this might just be the year to attend. Renedian Adventures to offer African tours on Harley Davidon's
Here's the details:
We are thrilled to announce that beginning this year (2015), two of our safaris can be enjoyed from the seat of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle!
Many of you have expressed interest in exploring Africa and experiencing this amazing continent, but are more comfortable on a different style of motorcycle than the BMW’s we currently use, and prefer somewhat tamer roads. We’ve heard you and this is the result.
While tours cover generally the same area and distance, routes have been adapted to alternate riding styles. That means that motorcycles on specific tours will be exclusively BMW or exclusively Harley-Davidson.
Tours on Harley-Davidson’s are available on:

Harley Davidson Mopar CSBK National Road Race Championship
AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship
Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada-sponsored dirt track star, Donald Taylor, of Port Colborne, Ontario, placed tenth in the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship half-mile race, held at the Allen County Fair in Lima, Ohio, on June 30, 2012.
Taylor adapted quickly to the pea-gravel surface that offers a multitude of racing lines and placed the George Evans-tuned XR750 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in sixth position, after the first timed qualifying session.
In the second and final six-lap qualifier, Taylor bettered his lap time from 27.327 to 27.293, and although slight on the clock, that time was good enough to launch Canada’s champion into second place on the leaderboard and ready for the heat races.
Taylor had plenty of fast company in his heat race, including eventual GNC final winner, Sammy Halbert, but put in a determined effort to place fourth and take a direct transfer to the championship 25-lap final. “I got a terrible start,” Taylor lamented. “I tried launching in third gear and it didn’t work out. The whole second row passed me going into one. I caught up to the leaders pretty quickly and was running in second at one point, then Sammy Halbert crashed right in front of me, I just missed hitting him. On the restart, I got in the front group again and figured I better just play it smart and get it into the final.”
In the final, Taylor started from the second row in the eighteen-rider field and had a very good start charging into turn one with a group of riders all around him. “That first turn was nasty,” Taylor recalled. “I’m bruised from head to toe from the roost. I had struggled with bike set up and I couldn’t get the drive I wanted coming off the turns; the guys in front of me were just blasting me.” The loose track surface that caused the roost had other challenges for the riders. Taylor explained, “the ruts got really bad. I came really close to crashing twice in a row coming off turn four, then Brandon Robinson crashed behind me with just three laps to go and they called for a restart and a five lap dash to decide it.”
With just five laps left in his day, Taylor decided that this would be a great opportunity to make up positions, but in spite of another good start and some great corner entrance speed, he was unable to get the drive he wanted. “Like I said, I was losing drive off the corners. I just needed some better set up help and I’m sure we would have done better. The bike was awesome, no complaints there, I had as good a motor as anyone out there. Top ten for my first ride on the XR750 [motorcycle] down here isn’t too bad.”
Hot Action Right from Start for the Canadian XR1200 Cup Series
MotoSport Plus of Kingston rider Steve Crevier took over right where he left off last year at Shannonville Motorsports Park. Last season Crevier qualified in the top spot with a 1:10.733 second lap time. In the first outing of the new season, Crevier again dominated the qualifier with a 1:10.402 second lap time, earning the reigning series champion the pole position going into Sunday’s final. The pole position finish earned the reigning champ the Tactical Products Canada, Luminox watch and gift pack. Ruthless Racing Inc. team-mates Darren James and J.R.MacRae ran less than a second behind with MacRae making the biggest gains, improving his last years qualifying lap time by a full second and a half. Five-time Canadian National Superbike Champion Michael Taylor, riding for Mackie Harley-Davidson, made a good showing in his first outing on the XR1200 qualifying in fourth. A collective group of Atlantic Harley- Davidson Retailers sent Blaise Fougere as their representative in the series, and Fougere didn’t disappoint with sixth best qualifying time. In seventh position was seven time Canadian dirt track racing champion Donald Don?Taylor riding for Clare’s Harley-Davidson of Niagara with an impressive showing on his first ride on a racing motorcycle with front brakes. Eric Trudel put the Becancour Harley-Davidson into the number eight spot while Patrick Chartrand rode the Leo Harley- Davidson entry to ninth. Rocky’s Harley- Davidson/ Kitchener Harley-Davidson rider Gump Harrison rounded out the top ten.
Sunday’s weather began with, overcast conditions slowly rolling over Shannonville Motorsports ParkAnd by the time the large field of Harley-Davidson XR1200motorcycles rolled out to the grid, a slight drizzle threatened to dampen the activities on the track. With wet areas in some corners, conditions were less than ideal for the start of the race.
Pole sitter Steve Crevier didn’t waste any time on the start with a big jump into the lead. Ruthless Racing Inc. team-mates Darren James and J.R. MacRae chased Crevier through the entire race but the quick start was enough to pull a gap and not relinquish the lead,. Behind the lead trio, a battle was unfolding between Harley-Davidson de L’Outaouais rider Elie Daccache and Mackie Harley-Davidsonracer Michael Taylor. The two riders exchanged opportunities until the three quarter mark of the race when Michael Taylor squeezed past Daccache for fourth. When the checkered fabric was aired out on the final lap of the 16-lap event under intensifying rain clouds it was Crevier with the runaway win and a new track record. Ruthless Racing Inc. then took the remaining steps of the podium with James just besting MacRae at the line. Fourth remained in the clutches of the persistent
Michael Taylor with Daccache a wheel width behind in fifth.
After the race Crevier commented, “I’ve been racing here since 1986 and I know that when the weather is coming in, I don’t want to be caught in it,” adding, “I just have to thank MotoSports Plus of Kingston for backing me again and for all the help.” Darren James was happy with the results of this seasons first outing for Ruthless Racing Inc., commenting, “hats off to Steve, he rode a good race”, adding “I want to thank my Ruthless Racing team, J.R. of course as well as Dave and Thomas and thanks again to Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada for making all this possible.”

2012 Canadian Drag Racing Season Begins
2012 SEASON OPENER OF EASTERN CANADIAN DRAG RACING National Record Is Set in Napierville, Making for a Fiery Season Ahead
The 2012 Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada-sponsored V-Rod Destroyer Series had a brilliant debut this past weekend at the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Race Association-hosted event at the Napierville Dragway, in Napierville, Quebec. A full grid of eight V-Rod Destroyer racers enjoyed one of the largest fields and closest battles to open the season, with the top five riders within a few hundredths of a second apart. The action was hot and intense under sunny skies, and any cobwebs that may have set in over the winter were quickly blown away in Saturday’s qualification runs.
Rocky’s Harley-Davidson rider and current Eastern champion, Pete Thomson, took over right where he left off with the best qualification ET of the day, breaking his own record with a 9.32958 and setting the stage for an intense weekend battle. Several other riders made it well known that this was not going to be a cakewalk for the determined Thomson. Trails End Harley-Davidson-sponsored Jeff Pitre from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, came the closest, only 0.003 seconds behind, and qualified for second. Four other riders were within 0.067 of a second of Thomson’s best run, including young Dan Thomson, also racing for Rocky’s Harley Davidson, who qualified for third behind his dad and Thomson Racing-teammate.
In Sunday’s elimination rounds, the perfect weather conditions prevailed and the grandstands filled with fans eager for the showdown in the east.
First up, “Goose” Gosselin, in his premier outing, had the daunting task of lining up against Pete Thomson. Gosselin had a great rookie run, but Thomson dispatched him to the sidelines with an ET of 9.83 and a top speed of 135.94 mph. Next up, Ray Philp was narrowly beat out by Fox Harley-Davidson rider, Chris Fox, who posted a 9.830 and a top speed of 139.05 mph Jeff Pitre then took out a struggling Paul Guerrieri, racing for Thunder Road Harley-Davidson, with a comparable ET of 9.375 and a top speed of 138.83 mph. Rookie, Dan Ramsay, got the better of Rocky’s Harley-Davidson and Thomson Racing’s Dan Thomson, when the younger Thomson’s dragging clutch pulled him through the lights early, sending him to spectator status. Ramsay earned his spot with an honest ET of 9.857, showing that he is going to be an early contender in the series.
In the second round of eliminations, Pete Thomson continued to dominate, besting Chris Fox with a 9.320 and a blistering top speed of 141.11 mph, slightly better than Fox, who posted an ET of 9.387 and a top speed of 130.74 mph. Jeff Pitre then beat out Dan Ramsay, who continued to run well, into the low nine-eights.
As the evening set in, the two top riders of the weekend lined up to see who would come out on top of the weekend long battle. As the green light flashed, Thomson took off, but when Pitre dumped the clutch, his V Rod motorcycle hesitated slightly before blazing off, enough to give Thomson the win with a 9.319 while Pitre’s recorded reaction time set the difference at 0.133 seconds, handing the first Eastern Series race win to Thomson.
Afterwards, an ecstatic Thomson commented, “It was great to see so much camaraderie out here this weekend, and so nice to see a couple of new guys come into the series” He added, “I am so thankful to Deeley Harley Davidson Canada and all the help they have given the series.”
Martin Horik, the Quebec based TV host of the program “HP” challenged himself to drag the 2012 Harley Davidson 10th Anniversary V-Rod motorcycle in the Street Class. The episode covering Martin’s feat will be airing in Quebec on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at 11:00 am ET on “V” channel, and will also be viewable online on www.vtele.ca.
The next event of the CMDRA V-Rod Destroyer Eastern Series will be at Toronto Motorsport Park in Cayuga, Ontario, on June 1 and 2. For further information on Canadian Drag Racing results, please refer to www.cmdra.com.
Tsunami motorcycle to be preserved
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle, recovered on the coast of British Columbia after drifting for more than a year and 4,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean following last year’s tsunami in Japan will be preserved by the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a memorial to the tragedy that claimed more than 15,000 lives, in accordance with the wishes of its owner, Ikuo Yokoyama.
The remarkable story of the 2004 FXSTB Softail Night Train motorcycle’s survival and recovery by Canadian, Peter Mark, made international headlines after he found it washed ashore on a remote beach on British Columbia’s Graham Island at low tide. Mark discovered the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese licence plate, along with several other items, in the remains of an insulated cargo van container where the motorcycle was being stored by Yokoyama prior to the tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011.
Working with news agencies and representatives from Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, and Harley Davidson Japan, contact was made with 29-year-old Yokoyama, who lost his home and currently lives in temporary housing in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Harley-Davidson Motor Company extended an offer to return the bike to him and to restore it to running condition. Still struggling to rebuild his life in the aftermath of the disaster, which claimed the lives of three of his relatives, Yokoyama respectfully declined. Although grateful for the offer to repatriate his motorcycle and touched by the outpouring of support from Harley motorcycle riders around the world, Yokoyama’s strong desire instead is for his bike to be preserved in the Harley-Davidson Museum, in honour of those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the disaster.
“It is truly amazing that my Harley-Davidson motorcycle was recovered in Canada after drifting for more than a year,” said Ikuo Yokoyama. “I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to Peter Mark, the finder of my motorcycle. Due to circumstances caused by the disaster, I have been so far unable to visit him in Canada to convey my gratitude."
“Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives. I am very grateful to Harley-Davidson for offering me an opportunity to visit the museum, and I would like to do that when things have calmed down. At the same time, I would like to meet Peter, who recovered my motorcycle, to express my gratitude. Finally, I would like to thank all people around the world once again for their wholehearted support of the areas hit by the earthquake and tsunami. I would like to ask them to help convey messages from the Japanese people about the tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which was a disaster of historic proportions.”
“My heart really goes out to Ikuo Yokoyama and all the survivors of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami for everything that was taken from them. I cannot even begin to comprehend the loss of family, friends, and community,” said Peter Mark. “I think it is fitting that the Harley [motorcycle], which was swept across the Pacific Ocean by the tsunami, will end up in the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to that tragic event. It has an interesting and powerful story to convey preserved in its current state.”
The motorcycle was recovered by Peter Mark along with the help of friends and transported to Victoria with support from Ralph Tieleman and Steve Drane of Steve Drane Harley-Davidson who commented "I have always felt that Harley-Davidson motorcycles have a soul, their owners have an emotional attachment to their bikes. I wanted to help reunite this Harley-Davidson with its owner". It has since been transferred to Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, in Vancouver. Plans for its transportation to and display at the Harley Davidson Museum are being developed.
“The Harley-Davidson Museum is honoured to receive this amazing motorcycle to ensure that its condition is preserved and can be displayed as a memorial to the Japan tsunami tragedy,” said Bill Davidson, Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Join special guests from River Glade Speedway, as they celebrate 35 years and showcase some of the hottest bikes from the 70s right there on display including a slide show of racing at the track from past and present. The bikes that will have on display for comparison purposes are a 1977 Cr-125 Honda, a 1987 CR-125 Honda as well as a 1997 CR-125 Honda. There will also be a 1979 Can-Am MX-5 250. These Honda's will illustrate the many changes the bikes have undergone over the years. Although 125's are no longer made for the most part, as the 250 4-stroke took over that class of racing we will most likely have a four stoke on hand as well to show further enhancements. These bikes will show the progression from air cooled to liquid engines, from drum brakes to disc brakes, steel frames to aluminum frames and from four inches of suspension travel to twelve. Also, horse power more than doubled over the years!
New Harley-Davidson model in Canada
“In creating the Seventy-Two [motorcycle], we were also inspired by the vibe of the early chopper era,” says Frank Savage, Harley-Davidson Manager of Industrial Design. “Those bikes were colourful and chromed, but also narrow and stripped down to the essentials. You look at period examples and they are almost as simple as a bicycle. It’s a custom style that’s very particular to America and that California scene.”
Metal flake, an iconic design element of the 70s, appeared in everything from dune buggy gel coat to vinyl diner upholstery, and on custom motorcycles. Harley-Davidson Motor Company brings the sparkle back on the Seventy-Two motorcycle with Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint. This new finish is created by applying a black base coat, followed by a polyurethane system that carries hexagon-shaped flakes that are more than seven times the diameter of the metal flake that is used in typical production paint. Each flake is coated with a thin aluminum film and then tinted red. Four applications of clear coat, combined with hand-sanding, create a smooth finish over the flakes.
“The final touch to the Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint is a logo on the tank top and pinstripe scallop details on both fenders,” says Savage. “Each was originally created by hand, and we recreated that art in a decal for production, so they still have the appearance of hand-applied graphics in that they are not exactly perfect. The graphics are then covered with a final clear-coat application.”
A solo seat shows off more of the paint exposed on the Seventy-Two motorcycle. The powertrain is finished in grey powdercoat with chrome covers and a new round air cleaner with a dished cover. A classic Sportster 2.2-gallon “peanut” fuel tank adds a final period touch to the motorcycle. The Harley-Davidson Seventy-Two motorcycle will be available in Canada through the network of authorized Harley-Davidson Retailers at a suggested Canadian Retail price of $11,919. For information on free test rides, please visit the events tab on www.harleycanada.com.

Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, Darren James, was ecstatic after winning his first pole position of the season. Not because of the achievement of besting Steve Crevier, but more for the pride of meeting his commitment to crew chief, Dave Murphy. “I told Dave I was gonna get him a watch,” (the Tactical Products Canada Luminox watch for winning the pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session). “Dave has been with me for 11 years now, and the team has had such a tough time; I think he really deserves this,” James added.
Series leader and MotoSport Plus of Kingston rider, Steve Crevier, qualified for second position, only 0.201 of a second behind James, with Privateers Harley-Davidson-sponsored Cody Matechuk a close third.
Sunday morning was welcomed by slate grey skies, but the mood in the Shubenacadie paddock could not have been brighter. The stage was set for the final, and Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, Darren James, could not have been happier. He had not only set the track record in the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup, but he had also managed to place his Buell 1125R bike onto the Pirelli Tire Superpole in the Superbike Class, a first in his years of trying.
As the day progressed, the skies cleared, and the big Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles were staged for the final on the challenging 2,560-km Atlantic Motorsports Park track. With the start lights darkened, Crevier and Matechuk had shot off, jostling for position going into the first corner with Crevier gaining a slight advantage. James was hot on their heels with J. R. McRae, Chris Harmon, and Samuel Proulx in a three-way battle behind the lead trio.
Crevier held on to a narrow margin in the lead, and Matechuk hounded the veteran at every corner; showing him a wheel at every turn. James continued his solid run in third, and had the best seat in the house to watch the battle in front of him. Behind them, a long train of Harley-Davidson XR1200 bikes had their own war.
By lap five of the 16-lap event, Vision Harley-Davidson rider, Chris Harmon, jumped ahead of McRae and Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson rider, Samuel Proulx.
The battle for the lead waged on for another six laps, with Crevier and Matechuk banging through the corners, until Matechuk’s race came to a sputtering halt as he pulled the Harley® bike to the side of the track, the victim of an electrical problem. With Matechuk out, Crevier romped to the win with James taking second and Chris Harmon finishing a brilliant ride to take third. Samuel Proulx managed to hold off Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, J.R. McRae, for the fourth spot, while Trev Deeley Motorcycles-sponsored Ov Spilbourghs took sixth. With his podium finish, Chris Harmon was the winner of the Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race Award.
After the race, Crevier commented, “I have to thank Pete Snell for all his hard work to make this happen, I don’t let him out from under that canopy all weekend, and he just works so hard to keep me going.” He added, “I made a bit of a rookie mistake on the start line [by] leaving my visor up, but I wasn’t letting go of the handlebars for nothing.”
With this win, Crevier holds a solid 21-point advantage over Matechuk: 208 points to 187.
The next round of the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup will be a doubleheader weekend. This final contest of the season will be held at the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, on August 20 and 21.
Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Test Our Metal
New 2012 Harley-Davidson V-Rod Line-up in Canada
Harley-Davidson Motor Company celebrates a decade of pavement-pounding performance with the V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition motorcycle, one of three models in a 2012 V‑Rod line that also includes an updated Night Rod Special motorcycle and the V-Rod Muscle motorcycle. Introduced as a 2002 model, the original V-Rod motorcycle ushered in a new era of Harley-Davidson motorcycle performance. Its 1,130 cc 60-degree Revolution V-Twin engine was the first Harley-Davidson production engine equipped with overhead camshafts and liquid cooling, and it came with a high-winding 9,000 rpm redline. Inspired by drag racing bikes and monster-motor customs, the V-Rod motorcycle debuted with aluminium disc wheels, a raked out chassis, fast-back seat, and anodized aluminium bodywork – a new styling direction for Harley-Davidson.
In just ten years, the Harley-Davidson V-Rod family grew to include a number of new models. The V-Rod model went to the track as the basis for the 2007 Custom Vehicle Operations V-Rod Destroyer motorcycle, an eight-second Factory drag racer. It was also the inspiration for the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod motorcycle, a four-time world champion in Pro Stock Motorcycle professional drag racing. For 2012, Harley-Davidson V-Rod models continue to serve up explosive performance and urban-cool styling for riders seeking a singular power-cruiser experience.
All 2012 V-Rod models are powered by the latest version of the Revolution engine, a 1,250 cc liquid-cooled V-Twin with dual overhead camshafts, four-valve cylinder heads, and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI). The powertrain is equipped with an Assist and Slip clutch, five-speed transmission, and a high-performance carbon fibre drive belt. The tires are Michelin Scorcher radials, including a 240 mm wide rear tire. Brembo triple-disc performance brakes are available with optional Factory-installed anti-lock braking system (ABS). Using Bike Builder, Customers can personalize their 1200 Custom motorcycle with the seat, handlebar, foot control, wheel, security, paint, and engine finish options of their choice, which are then installed right at the Factory. Even more Retailer-installed accessories can be added, and viewed, on the Bike Builder site. The Customer can then print out a description of their bike and bring it to a Harley-Davidson Retailer where they can review the motorcycle with trained staff, select additional accessories to be installed by the Retailer to further customize the motorcycle, and then place an order. Customers can expect to be riding their new bike in as little as four weeks from the time an order is placed with an authorized Harley-Davidson Retailer.
All 2012 Sportster models will have Michelin Scorcher tires with a tread pattern designed, tested and styled specifically for the Sportster motorcycle to provide an ideal grip, an even wear and a longer life. Fifteen Sportster paint options include seven new colour choices for 2012. Side covers will be finished in either Gloss Black or Denim Black to match the finish on other bodywork. The Forty-Eight model will have a new tank graphic.

Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Series opens in Mirabel, Quebec
Horrible conditions and constant showers could not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada XR1200 contingent at its inaugural performance in the Canadian Superbike round one weekend of the 2011 season. Canada’s Snowbirds did a fly-by, seeming to tear a hole in the unrelenting grey blanket that hovered overhead of Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec. Skies began to clear and the difficult course dried long enough for the Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles to make their appearance on the track for qualifying.
Thirteen riders rolled out onto the track for the first laps of the very popular XR1200 spec class and, as excited fans jostled for position behind the barriers, riders got their first chance to ride the bikes in the heat of battle. Handlebar-to-handlebar action became common and, almost immediately, the gauntlet was thrown as 17-year-old Cody Matechuk, racing for Privateers Harley-Davidson, diced it out with Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, Darren James, and MotoSports Plus rider, Steve Crevier. By the end of the 20-minute session, Matechuk posted the fastest qualifying time of 1:30.433, earning him the Tactical Products Luminox watch for winning the pole position. James closely followed suit in second and Crevier boasted the third fastest time.
Sunday’s main event proved to be one of the most exciting races of the weekend, with the sun making a guest appearance. Matechuk got a brilliant start from the pole and shot out to the lead, dragging Crevier and James behind him. Behind the lead trio, a clump of riders battled for position with Samuel Proulx, riding for Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson, leading the charge ahead of Vision Harley-Davidson rider, Chris Harmon, and Trev Deeley Motorcycles-sponsored Olivier Spillborghs in pursuit. Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, J.R. MacRae, had his fill of Costa Mouzouris riding the #22 Harley-Davidson media bike. Another youngster, Lee Kuhn Jr., riding for Jacox Harley-Davidson, diced it out with Elie Daccache.
Back up front, Matechuk and Crevier slugged it out in every corner while James ran a close third just biding his time to strike. As the 14-lap race wore down, traffic became an issue and James lost several positions. This was all Matechuk needed as he crossed the line with just a wheel length to spare ahead of Crevier, leaving Darren James to settle for a third place finish.
Crevier said after the race, “I just can’t believe I got beat by a kid, but it was a lot of fun.” An elated Matechuk commented after, “It was great race. Steve got up there and he kept showing me a wheel.” Matechuk capped of his weekend by also walking away with the Performance Undergear “Performance of the Race” Award.
Missing the race weekend were veteran Ruthless Racing Inc. rider, Dave Estok, and Freedom Harley-Davidson rider, Steven Nickerson. Both riders are nursing injuries and hope to return to action for the next round at Shannonville Motorsports Park on July 2 and 3.

Nickerson to Miss the First Round of the 2011 Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Cup
Nickerson received minor injuries to his hand and elbow. Due to a minor concussion he received during the incident the up-and-coming racer was advised to refrain from racing this weekend to ensure his and his fellow racers’ safety.
“This isn’t how I had hoped to start my season and I will be ready for the second round at Shannonville Motorsports Park on the Canada Day long weekend.” said Nickerson. “I want to thank my family, sponsors, friends and fans for their support and understanding."

NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON BLACKLINE MOTORCYCLE
The Blackline motorcycle balances allegiance with rebellion, discarding previous conventions of colour and chrome for a Dark Custom look that is honest, functional, and attainable. Visual elements of the original bobber movement are combined with the raw, hand-hewn style embraced by today’s young builders. The Blackline motorcycle, available in Canada at a MSRP of $17,149, throws new fuel on a fire that burns across generations: an unquenchable desire to ride.
Lean and Tight
The Softail chassis uses rear suspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally along the frame rails below the powertrain, where they are kept out of sight. So while the swingarm section replicates the lines of a vintage hard-tail frame, the Blackline motorcycle delivers suspension performance and handling that are thoroughly modern. The internally counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B engine is rigid-mounted within the frame, creating a solid connection between rider and power that moves the motorcycle to enhance the emotional riding experience.
Key features of the 2011 Blackline motorcycle include:
- NEW Powertrain styling.
- Rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 89 ft. lbs., peak torque at 3,250 rpm.

Canadian Motorcycle Racing World gets a new class for 2011
After a very well-received season opener in 2010 at the Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec, next year’s schedule re-proposes a kick-off to the five-round 2011 Parts Canada Superbike Championship in Mirabel with a double-header wrap-up of the season at the popular Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario from August 19 to 21. For the first time in eight years, the newly repaved Autodrome Saint-Eustache in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, will also host some spectacular racing in 2011.
Backed by Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Cup is based on a similar series already running in the United States and Britain. The series uses identical, near stock versions of the sport twin engine motorcycles to ensure a high level of competition without the necessity of major upgrades over the course of a season.
When asked to comment, Darren James enthuses, “I’ve been riding twins all my life, but never have I been as excited as I am about starting this new class in Canada. I think this a great opportunity for our Retailers across Canada to get involved in racing and to showcase the high performance of the XR 1200 [motorcycle], the street version of which is known as the XR 1200 [motorcycle]. I truly look forward to working with individual racers across the country to see this class grow.” Darren James’ new #29 XR 1200 motorcycle will be on display at the Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council (MMIC) Canadian Motorcycle shows across the country and information for racers wanting to participate in the new Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Cup will be available on site.

Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada Continues to Support the Troops
Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada is pleased to maintain the Test Our Metal Program on military bases across Canada, allowing troops to enjoy test rides on the newest models of Harley-Davidson motorcycles on specific dates, which are outlined on www.harley-canada.com.
Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada is pleased and proud to introduce a new collection of MotorClothes® apparel in Canada that highlights the historic relationship between Harley-Davidson® and serving military personnel.
Featuring men’s military-inspired graphics on key silhouettes, the Military Collection consists of a total of 15 styles across sportswear, casual outerwear and accessories apparel. This line features nostalgic graphics and styling reminiscent of H-D support during the WWII era. Several of the graphics are taken directly from the Harley-Davidson archives.
“CANEX acknowledges, with gratitude, the altruism of H.O.G. members and Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada. The support Deeley Harley-Davidson [Canada] has extended to the Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services [CFPFSS] through participation in such programs as Operation Santa Claus is a demonstration of their commitment to Canadian Forces Personnel serving abroad. [Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada]’s many initiatives, such as H-D Canadian Forces Test Our Metal Events, speak volumes to Deeley EXCLUSIVE HARLEY-DAVIDSON BUELL DISTRIBUTOR
Harley-Davidson Canada’s recognition and support of the Canadian Forces community”, says Ken Stilwell, CANEX Manager of Corporate Programs.
The Military Collection is created with the WLA motorcycles of the 1940s in mind. These motorcycles were specifically produced for military use by the U.S. and its allies during WWII. During the war, Harley-Davidson Motor Company produced approximately 90,000 WL military models, in various configurations, for use on virtually every front. The olive drab painted WLA, which came to be known as “The Liberator”, featured special wartime equipment such as an ammunitions box, a machine-gun scabbard, and front and rear blackout lights to help soldiers avoid detection. It played an important role in WWII for military police, couriers, scouts, and communication specialists who learned to ride in unpredictable conditions, over difficult terrain. This limited-edition collection honours some of those key moments in the history of Canada, as well as that of Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
For further information on this limited collection, please refer to www.harley-canada.com.
15th Canadian National H.O.G. Rally
Gina McNeil, Manager, Enthusiast Services, comments, “I am really excited about this year’s event. We are taking a grass-roots approach by creating a fun atmosphere where like-minded people can share their common passion in motorcycling. Although there are exclusive H.O.G. member-only events, such as seminars and ceremonies, there are plenty of activities where the public can participate as spectators. We welcome everyone in the Sherbrooke area to come out on Saturday morning to witness a parade of over 800 motorcycles. Thanks to everyone involved, including the local Retailer and Chapter, as well as the City of Sherbrooke itself for allowing us to host this event in such a biker-friendly setting. It will be a great event and we are looking forward to seeing everyone in Sherbrooke in August.”
Starting on August 5th, Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson will be the first place in Canada to test ride a brand new 2011 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Bombardier made an offer on Buell - Harley declined
The liquid cooled v-twin that is used in 1125cc based Buell bikes is make by Rotax - a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bombardier group and BRP was interested preserving the existence of an important customer... ie: Buell.
It's said that BRP initially made an offer to acquire the engine, manufacturing rights, and production tooling. When that was reportedly rejected it's said that BRP made an offer on the Buell brand itself.
How interesting indeed! Erik Buell has reportedly signed a 15 month non-compete clause so watch out for the day that ends. Still - the 1125cc based Rotax engine will be off limits as it's still owned by Harley.
BRP would have perhaps been able to use the 1125cc engine in their Spyder bike which now use a 990 cc Rotax engine. Maybe they would have been able to build a successful business out of the Buell brand too?

Harley-Davidson Revs Up with a Chic, Women-Only Garage Party Event for Rethink Breast Cancer
Combining entertainment with an innovative and interactive way to learn about motorcycling, the Canadian Harley-Davidson hosted event will take place at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District on Tuesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
The Precious Metal Gala marks the closing of a series of successful Garage Party events hosted by over 60 authorized Canadian Harley-Davidson Retailers across Canada, designed to provide women with the confidence to get into the sport of motorcycling. Recent numbers show that 13.4 per cent of Harley-Davidson sales have been to women, supporting the idea that they are as adventurous and adrenaline-seeking as their male counterparts.
The ultimate “girls’ night out” will see an all-female guest list walk the pink carpet, including CEOs, tastemakers, and talent. Karen Davidson, the fashion icon and great-granddaughter of the Company’s co-founder William A. Davidson, will be in attendance at the event. Billie Holiday, morning host at Virgin Radio, will emcee the event and welcome ladies as they enter the stylishly themed venue.
This decadent Biker Chic-themed party will include hair and makeup stations to prepare babes for an action- style biker photo shoot on a new 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a chance to browse the Precious Closet featuring the new Harley-Davidson Pink Label collection, the opportunity to learn about how to get your motorcycle licence, and the very popular motorcycle lift, where women learn the technique of effortlessly picking up a bike from the ground. All of this, plus a silent auction, tasty hors d’œuvres, and drinks, will help in achieving the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada goal of raising $15,000 for Rethink Breast Cancer.
“Our inspiration for this campaign is to show women they can do anything they set their minds to. Riding a Harley motorcycle is an exhilarating activity that makes women feel strong, confident, and excited,” said Don James, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada.
“Through the Precious Metal Gala, we are supporting our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who are fighting breast cancer, as well as introducing women to motorcycling – it’s the perfect combination, as each involves people with great strength and spirit.”
“At Rethink, we always work to disseminate information about breast cancer in interesting and compelling ways. Partnering with Harley-Davidson in Canada was a perfect fit for us and allows us to reach and inform a group of curious and adventurous women,” said M.J. DeCoteau, Executive Director of Rethink Breast Cancer.
A new season of women-only Harley-Davidson Garage Party events kicks off across Canada
Starting in March, Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada is promoting a series of Garage Party events across Canada. These events will offer the perfect platform for women throughout Canada who do not have their licence yet, to start out on an incredible journey together; that of experiencing the art of motorcycling.
At Garage Party events, over 60 authorized Canadian Harley-Davidson Retailers will be offering aspiring female riders the opportunity to learn more about how to get a motorcycle licence, to experience the latest Harley-Davidson fashions specifically tailored for women, and to try out motorcycles in a fun and interactive way.
Not only can Garage Party event guests meet other like-minded women on this empowering journey, but a national contest (www.garageparty.ca) also allows entrants to win prizes, including a breath-taking biker-style make-over with a one-on-one image consultation offered by Your Shop Girl, a shopping spree at a Harley-Davidson® Retail Store, a complimentary beginner’s rider training course, as well as VIP access for two to Precious Metal 2010, the most decadent and exclusive Garage Party event of the year, held in Toronto and hosted by Billie from Virgin 99.9. Tickets to this event will be available for purchase by the public for $75 beginning Monday, March 15, at www.garageparty.ca.
This event will be in support of Rethink Breast Cancer as part of a broader initiative with women as its focal point, complemented by the recently launched Canadian Harley-Davidson Pink Label Collection.
Tagged with the motto “Purchase with a Purpose”, the Canadian Pink Label Collection is comprised of 12 of the most popular women’s Harley-Davidson MotorClothes silhouettes – each featuring a tasteful touch of pink – including jackets, pants, eyewear, gloves, helmets, and shirts, which participating Retailers will have on display.
