Manitoba plans Veteran plates for motorcycles

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has announced that the province will  soon be offering a specially designed motorcycle plate to honour Manitoba veterans.

“Veterans who are motorcycle enthusiasts are now able to participate in this very special program,” said Selinger. “Several years ago, we introduced veteran plates for passenger vehicles. We’re now enhancing this special licence program.

“The veteran speciality licence plate pays homage to our veterans and peacekeepers for their dedication, bravery and sacrifices they have made. I’m proud to say that Manitoba is home to many thousands of men and women who have served faithfully to protect our country.”

The veterans motorcycle plate, should be available before the 2013 motorcycle riding season, will display the symbolic red poppy.

Speciality licence plates will be administered by Manitoba Public Insurance. Applicants will be able to submit their applications to the Royal Canadian Legion for approval or apply to Manitoba Public Insurance, Vehicle Registration – Licensing Services.

Applicants will need to provide a completed veteran licence plate application form with documentation proving they meet the qualifications for a veteran licence plate. Applicants must also include a $5 application fee made payable to Manitoba Public Insurance.

Those eligible for a veterans motorcycle licence plate are:

• people who served in the First World War, Second World War or the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces or an allied force, or in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command;

• people who served at least three years in the Canadian Forces,  NATO operations or a United Nations peacekeeping force as a member of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, another Canadian police force or an allied force; and

• people who are an active member of the Canadian Forces and who have honourably served in the Forces for at least three years.

Ducati North America - Brining some of Italy to a Canadian town near you!

The big Ducati truck filled with the latest 2009 season motorcycles from Italy is going to be making it's way across Canada. It'll be making fourteen stops along the way so that you can demo their machines.

The tour also supports a charity too so you pay a small fee to ride and the money goes to charity. I believe it was $20 a ride last year and the ride lasted about an hour.

Toronto, ON (15 April 2009) - Ducati North America is pleased to announce the 2009 Ducati Canada National Demo Tour, an opportunity to sample the 2009 model lineup while supporting the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The annual event begins April 25th in Vancouver, BC and has stops at authorized Ducati dealers across Canada, concluding June 19th in Dieppe, NB. The demo tour offers a unique opportunity to sample Ducati’s most popular models in a fun riding environment, and meet with both Ducati and dealer staff to learn more about the Italian manufacturer’s handmade motorcycles.

For 2009 the Ducati demo tour will be teaming up with Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; requesting a voluntary $10.00 donation collected from participating riders. Last year Ducati demo riders contributed over $4000 to the foundation, and had a great time doing it. Ducati North America hopes to raise even more in 2009 to help this worthy charity.

For more information about the 2009 Canadian demo tour, as well as details regarding safety requirements and the models available, please visit www.ducatiusa.com.

Annual Ride for Sight weekend celebration events are supported in part by generous corporate sponsorship and are organized by volunteer Ride for Sight Planning Teams.

While Ride for Sight participants are primarily comprised of motorcyclists -- volunteers, fundraisers and supporters also include non-motorcyclists and families affected by retinal diseases.

Ride for Sight is the single largest private fundraising initiative for vision research in the world.

To-date, Ride for Sight has raised more than $17 million in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the only organization in Canada whose sole mandate is to fund research for blindness caused by retinal degenerations.

Manitoba motorcycle insurance rates called 'extortion'

Manitoba Public Insurance is charging some awfully high rates on motorcycles and they seem to always be on the rise. Some motorcycle dealers in the city are going so far as to call it 'extortion'.

Ted Hector of Thunder Road Motorcycles is one of those dealers voicing their opinion about the Public insurer.

"Do you think $3,000 for a bike is insurance? It's not -- it's bloody extortion,"

"And they've been putting it up over 10 years, every single year. But it's compounded. And it just keeps going. It's absolutely outrageous."

Hector indicated Saskatchewan premiums in some cases are as little as 20% of what Manitoba motorcyclists pay, MPI spokesman Brian Smiley argued comparisons often put "apples to oranges" with differences in coverage provided for damages as well as for fires, thefts and injuries.

MPI's motorcycle rate hikes are "coming back down" due to a change to split costs evenly between owners of motorbikes and other vehicles following collisions, he said.

Thunder Road Motorcycles put together a few insurance quotes from Saskatchewan and for the same bikes in Manitoba. Needless to say - the differences are substantial.

Insurance rates in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for certain models of motorcycles:

- 2008 Suzuki 600 GSXR sport bike -- Sask. $1,205, Man. $3,132
- 2004 Suzuki 250 Marauder -- Sask. $304, Man. $1,847
- 1995 Harley Davidson FXWG -- Sask. $1,119, Man. $2,264
- 1978 Honda CB750 -- Sask. $552, Man. $1,814
- 1938 Harley Davidson ULH -- Sask. $779, Man. $2,352
