The Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV Show is where Atlantic Canada RIDES and BUYS! Visitors will be shopping the show and trying that new ATV or Motorcycle on for size and discussing the purchase with their local dealer plus getting all of those tough questions answered right from manufacturer representatives. The bikes that will have on display for comparison purposes are a 1977 Cr-125 Honda, a 1987 CR-125 Honda as well as a 1997 CR-125 Honda. There will also be a 1979 Can-Am MX-5 250. These Honda's will illustrate the many changes the bikes have undergone over the years. Although 125's are no longer made for the most part, as the 250 4-stroke took over that class of racing we will most likely have a four stoke on hand as well to show further enhancements. These bikes will show the progression from air cooled to liquid engines, from drum brakes to disc brakes, steel frames to aluminum frames and from four inches of suspension travel to twelve. Also, horse power more than doubled over the years!

Ban of RIGID Frame motorcycles in New Brunswick

Joe Chronkhite contacted us to let us know about a little situation he's experiencing with motor vehicle registration in New Brunswick. And it's QUITE a situation.

Joe lives in Rosedale (which is near Woodstock, New Brunswick) and the province has told him his 1976 Triumph isn't roadworthy because it's a hard tail. A hard tail is a bike without rear suspension. When he went to register a bike he was restoring he was given the names of some engineers to contact who would be able to certifiy the bike. The guy he contacted reportedly didn't even look at the bike - when he found out it was a hard tail Joe was told that hard tails aren't allowed on the road.

Shortly after this he got a letter about the 76 Triumph he's been riding for several years.  The letter which was signed by the manager of vehicle safety with New Brunswick's Public Safety Department that said until his Triumph is engineer-certified, his registration won't be replaced or renewed and he can't transfer ownership.

So now he's got one bike that he can't ride and another 1942 Harley Davidson that he's restoring that he won't be able to ride. Not only that - he won't be able to transfer ownership of those vehicles.

Wow!  That has some serious implications for people who ride vintage bikes or do restoration work.

Check out the link to the story in the Daily Gleaner for full details on the story.

Thanks for the tip Joe - Best of luck with your fight.

Red light camera's on the way for New Brunswick?

According to a CBC news report, New Brunswick Public Safety Minister Robert Trevors is considering reforms to the Motor Vehicle Act that would allow municipalities to install red light cameras at key intersections.

Several New Brunswick municipalities (including Fredericton) are considering the installation of red light cameras at high-traffic intersections that are prone to accidents. So, if a driver runs a red light it'll be caught on camera and a ticket is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.

"Anything that can improve the safety of our highways, of course we're always interested," Trevors said.

The Motor Vehicle Act currently doesn't allow municipalities to put in the cameras but relevant sections were written in 1955 when red light camera's wouldn't have been around and Trevors feels like it's time for an update but wants public input before making the changes.

The legislation could be updated by the end of 2011 which would give municipalities the go ahead to install red light cameras.

There's always big debate's when it comes to red light camera's with many people arguing that they don't really prevent accidents and that they're just a provincial money grab.  Once the money starts rolling in from red light tickets the yellow light durations seem to shrink, catching drivers in the intersection when they haven't actually intentionally run the red light.

Really interested in how red light camera's work. Check a HowStuffWorks description of them here.

Motorcycle licencing to tighten up in New Brunswick?

The death of  a prominent lawyer in Saint John, New Brunswick, 46-year-old  Caroline Higgins may have future implications for those seeking their motorcycle licence in the province.

Ms. Higgins was killed last year after being accidentally struck by an out-of-control motorcycle while she was out jogging.  According to the Telegraph Journal, Ms. Higgins' family is now asking the provincial government to make changes to regulations and licensing for motorcycles.

They feel that that motorcyclists should be held to the same safety and skill standards as automobile owners.  New Brunswick doesn't have a graduated licensing for motorcycle drivers, nor does it require annual mechanical inspections, or training for new drivers.

The rider that killed Ms. Higgins had purchased it not long before the accident and it was found to have mechanical problems. The rider who lost control had just recently obtained his licence - about 2 weeks prior to the accident.

Atlantic Motoplex brings Triumph and Suzuki into the fold

New Brunswick based Atlantic Motoplex has some big news. In addition to the Yamaha, BMW, and Ducati's they've been selling - they've just added two new makes to the list... Suzuki and Triumph.

That's a lot of brands under one roof, making for a wide range choices when it comes to buying a new or used motorcycle. You can try out a lot of bikes in one convenient location.

They've also recently launched a new accessories catalog that can be downloaded directly from their site. Get your copy HERE (it's a PDF).

They buy big and pass the savings on to you.

In a recent discussion with a member of the sales team at Atlantic Motoplex they indicated they're one of the leaders in motorcycle tire sales in the region - they offer 30-40% off suggested MSRPs as standard. A tire rep confirmed independently that if you're in the market for a new set of rubbers it'd be a good idea to check out the prices at Atlantic Motoplex.

10,000 motorcyclists expected to rock Atlanticade

The festivities at five-day event known as "Atlanticade" started on Wednesday, June 24th and run through to June 28th. Atlanticade takes place in Moncton, New Brunswick. This is the third year for the event and it's going to be bigger than ever - they're expecting 10,000 motorcyclists this year (according to their website).

Last year they had participants from almost every province, along with entries from the U.S.; they even had a long distance entrant all the way from Ireland.

Speaking of Ireland; Heather Ireland will be there with the folks from Biker-TV to film all the action. Custom builders and painters will be competing for the chance to win over $7,500 in prize money and awards.

Plenty of activities are scheduled; there's some organized rides, wings competitions, tons of live performances, lots of vendors, dyno days, poker runs, burnout competitions, and plenty more.

If you can't get enough live music as part of the many performances of Atlanticade - well then there's a Bon Jovi concert taking place at Magnetic Hill the same weekend too. Headliner for the event will be Bachman-Cummings (former frontmen for The Guess Who.

So, get yourself packed and head on down to Atlanticade - check out the website here for additional details.

Ducati North America - Brining some of Italy to a Canadian town near you!

The big Ducati truck filled with the latest 2009 season motorcycles from Italy is going to be making it's way across Canada. It'll be making fourteen stops along the way so that you can demo their machines.

The tour also supports a charity too so you pay a small fee to ride and the money goes to charity. I believe it was $20 a ride last year and the ride lasted about an hour.

Toronto, ON (15 April 2009) - Ducati North America is pleased to announce the 2009 Ducati Canada National Demo Tour, an opportunity to sample the 2009 model lineup while supporting the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The annual event begins April 25th in Vancouver, BC and has stops at authorized Ducati dealers across Canada, concluding June 19th in Dieppe, NB. The demo tour offers a unique opportunity to sample Ducati’s most popular models in a fun riding environment, and meet with both Ducati and dealer staff to learn more about the Italian manufacturer’s handmade motorcycles.

For 2009 the Ducati demo tour will be teaming up with Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; requesting a voluntary $10.00 donation collected from participating riders. Last year Ducati demo riders contributed over $4000 to the foundation, and had a great time doing it. Ducati North America hopes to raise even more in 2009 to help this worthy charity.

Shediac, New Brunswick to host biker rally

The Shediac Motorcycle Lobster Rally (being held Sept. 4-7 this year)is a special way for organizer, Danny Bourque, to thank the community to that helped him so much he says.

Just about 28 years ago, Bourque was a youth diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare condition where the body stops producing enough new blood cells. Bourque was one of the first Canadians to receive a bone marrow transplant.

The Motorcycle Lobster rally was introduced five years ago, when Bourque and fellow organizer Helen Elliott (who had an aneurysm that kept her from walking for two years) decided they wanted to host an event that sought to recognize how the community rallied around both of them during their health difficulties.

"We decided it was time for me to give back to the community so that's where the idea for the rally came from," said Bourque.

And so a great event was born...

Money raised by the rally goes to the Moncton Lion's Sick Children's Fund, a charity which helps families with seriously ill children by giving needed financial assistance.

Last year about $14,500 was raised for the cause and organizers hope that total tops $20,000 this year. Last year the money helped a child from Sackville, NB who had aplastic anemia.

Highlights of the rally event include a casino and dance under a big tent at Parlee Beach Provincial Park, a burn out competition and a downtown biker party and custom bike display which will shut down Shediac's Main Street on Sept. 5. Bourque said this event is great for the entire family to attend and take part in.

Other events on the rally's schedule includes a poker night, free rounds of pool for registered bikers and a steak or lobster supper.

For more information please visit the Shediac Bike Rally website.
