A Letter from David Hatch - Motorcycle Experience

Hi everyone,

A couple of brand new Honda’s (CB1100A and VFR1200X) were dropped off here recently and my buddy Gilbert and I couldn't resist going on a pre ride with both motorcycles over the long weekend.

A lot of folks have been asking me what I thought of the VFR1200X. Well, the big impression with this motorcycle, has got to be the terrific engine. Hands down. I mean, the V4 engine sounds great in this configuration (new cams and ECU programming) and the torque is terrific everywhere up and down the rev range. The fly by wire throttle delivers superb feel and the sound from the single pipe is sweet. The adjustable suspension pieces are a nice touch here and the handling is superb. Everything has been nicely calibrated to allow both single and two up riding. I really like how this bike handled. Linked anti lock braking is standard and totally up to the job while the crossed laced spoke wheels were perfect for the pavement.  And they managed "ok” on the hard-packed dirt roads we explored.  To make your touring life easier, the VFR1200X comes with a really nifty adjustable, on the fly, windscreen, heated grips, hand protectors, a hand 12 volt power socket for your GPS. You can also order the optional hard bag luggage system with internal liner bags. The system is top drawer, however there were a couple of minor gripes. The saddle was a bit of a let down - it’s been sculpted to allow for riders with a shorter inseam to be able to reach the ground. Great for shorter riders.. not so great for my glutes! After a couple of hours of riding, I found myself thinking that if I owned this motorcycle, I’d probably swap the saddle our for something with more cushion. The other tiny pet peeve?  I don’t know if it’s my aging eyes, but I really found the instrument pod a tad lacking.  Maybe it was because I was jumping back and forth with the CB1100A. A retro standard motorcycle with two great sweeping analogue gauges. I dunno. Not a huge deal. But I’d love to see a bigger info screen on this puppy. Overall though, I loved the VFR1200X. If you are looking for a bike that can pretty much take you anywhere as long as the road is mostly paved. A motorcycle with lots of room to stretch out and move around. A motorcycle with a great suspension set up that delivers great handling when the road turns twisty. If you like throaty, torque loaded engines with unique character that delivers plenty of power across the width of the power band, then this is the bike for you!

Also, don't forget that we will be once again throwing a party for fans of our TV show at the end of September and you are all invited to ride out and join in the celebration! That’s right, our Prince Edward County based motorcycle television show will play host on Saturday, September 24 at the Hillier Creek Estate Winery just south of Trenton, Ontario in the heart of the County’s wine region. As you know, our long running TV show, which is shot primarily in Prince Edward County has been on the air for over 27 years, and as the show's presenter, I’m looking forward to playing host down in the County from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Once again the Honda Canada demo ride crew will be on hand providing motorcycle demo rides and party favours. Plus this year I’m happy to announce that we’ve partnered up with the local, Eastern Shield chapter of the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group and they will be on hand with a large vintage motorcycle display.

Meanwhile in Episode 4, my riding buddy Norm Wells and I ride through the valley of fire east of Las Vegas, Nevada and wind up stealing home plate. Then during this weeks “Red Adventure”, former professional road racer turned expert enduro rider, Toni Sharpless looks at under armour. While on the subject of body protection, our resident riding Instructor Clinton Smout will stop by this week to discuss the riding shoulder seasons. Plus motorcycle journalist, Colin Fraser will roll up with some advice on shopping for a used set of wheels while looking back at a 2007 Harley-Davidson Night Rod.

Hope you like the show!

Keep your right hand cranked,

David

A letter from Dave at Motorcycle Experience.
Looks like a must watch episode!

Earlier this week I was out in the Ganaraska Forest just south of Kirby, Ontario, shooting a pile of new Red Adventure riding features with two of my favourite off-road riding buddies, Lawrence Hacking and Toni Sharpless. When it comes to off-road racing and riding, nobody knows more than Lawrence Hacking. This guy has raced in the International Six Days, the Baja 1000, the Mexican 1000 and the Paris to Dakar. Trust me, when we get together, I always learn something new. As for Toni, we go all the way back to 1990 when she made her first appearance on Motorcycle Experience testing a Yamaha FZR600. The first time I met Toni, I could tell that she had motor oil in her veins. Toni is such a spark and is always a pleasure to hang with. She’s raced professionally as a road racer at such prestigious events as the Daytona 200, the Suzuka 8 hour, the Bol d’Or and the 24 hours of LeMans. Now that’s an impressive resumé! More recently she’s been hitting the enduro trail here in Ontario and again, this gal has compiled an amazing wealth of knowledge when it comes to adventure riding. Be sure to check out her feature this week on the show. Anyway, we all had a blast out in the Gani. And speaking of Motorcycle Experience...

On this week’s edition of Motorcycle Experience, we will kick off the show by asking long time viewer, Mark Russell to sample Triumph Motorcycle’s hugely popular tribute to the café racers of the late 1960’s, the Thruxton. Then Norm Wells and I will continue our Ultimate Ride down in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year we’ve rented a couple of BMW GSs and we’re taking in the amazing scenery out in the Nevada desert. This week on day 2 we tackle the all important question of where to grab lunch.

On Shifting Gears, SMART riding instructor Clinton Smout looks at extending the riding season and Senior Editor Colin Fraser stops by to discuss the art of shopping for a used set of wheels, while looking back at Harley-Davidson’s 2007 Night Rod. And during this week's “Red Adventure” segment Toni Sharpless, will talk about what to wear under your adventure riding Jacket.

Also, don’t forget that I’ve been invited to head up to Whitehorse next month to help host their TELUS Ride For Dad event on June 11th. I plan to be there for the whole weekend as this is a super worthy cause and I’m sure that it’s going to be a blast. To date, some 250,000 people have helped to raise over 16 million dollars in the fight against prostate cancer and now you can add me to the growing number of folks who want to help out. There are some 40 communities across Canada hosting a Ride For Dad right now so please sign up and join a ride near you. You'll be glad you did.

Keep your right hand cranked!

Motorcycle Experience on TSN

A message from Dave Hatch:

Well the wait and winter is finally over! May’s arrival means that it’s officially time to get out and ride and watch Motorcycle Experience on TSN.

This year we have changed our format slightly, added a new official charity for the show and picked up a new riding apparel supplier. First up, lets talk about the new show line up. Here’s what you'll see on this week's episode: On this jam-packed edition of Motorcycle Experience, we will kick off our 27th season on TSN by sampling Honda Canada's all new Africa Twin out in Victoria, BC. Then Norm Wells and I will kick start our 15th BMW Ultimate Ride down in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year we’ve rented a couple of GS’s from EagleRider and plan to double-down on some amazing scenery and roads out in the Nevada desert. Then, during our brand new “Red Adventure” segment, expert off road racer, Lawrence Hacking, will examine the exploding sport of adventure riding. On Shifting Gears, SMART riding instructor Clinton Smout tackles the sand and gravel and Senior editor Colin Fraser will wrap up the first episode by stopping by to discuss the art of shopping for a used set of wheels, all the while looking back at a 2006 Suzuki 650 bandit.

During many of these segments you’ll note that I’m now wearing the latest riding gear from Olympia Moto Sports. They came on board with us late last fall and, I gotta say, I really like how they design their products. The gear is really well made, fits me perfectly, and I like their price point. I was wearing one of their Expedition suits during the shooting of this year’s Ultimate Ride in Las Vegas and it was a perfect choice for the chilly (5 degrees every day) Nevada desert.

Also new for 2016 is our official charity, the Ride for Dad. I'm heading up to Whitehorse this summer to help host their TELUS Ride For Dad event on June 11th. I plan to be there for the whole weekend as this is a super worthy cause. To date, some 250,000 people have helped to raise over 18 million dollars in the fight against prostate cancer and now you can add me to the growing number of folks who want to help out.

There are 40 communities across Canada hosting a Ride For Dad this year so please sign up and join a ride near you. You will be glad you did.

Keep your right hand cranked!

Episode 12 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

This week you can catch the last airing of Motorcycle Experience for 2015.

You know, since this is our 26th season of Motorcycle Experience, I figure we’ve sampled some three hundred and thirty-five brand new motorcycles over the years. Everything from cruisers, standards and tourers to adventure tourers, sport bikes, naked bikes, and scooters. As you know, every season we invite viewers and fans of the show to spend twelve weeks riding and sampling the very latest and greatest motorcycles on offer from our friends in the motorcycle industry. And this year has been no different. Case in point: recently we sampled the very latest in hard chrome cruisers fresh off the Project Rushmore drawing board from the folks at Harley-Davidson. The latest big displacement adventure touring tool from Yamaha, the Super Ténéré also drew high praise. We then sampled a couple of the very latest six cylinder touring platform motorcycles from the Honda menu while a pair of very cool all new, all ‘rounder middle weights from both Yamaha and Honda turned heads along with a couple of all new small displacement sportbikes earning a very big round of applause. And speaking of sportbikes, big displacement, high performance sports machines also took centre stage this year - with Honda’s fully amalgamated, super rare CBR 1000RR SP, and BMW Motorrad’s naked roadster, the S1000R put smiles on our collective faces and drew standing ovations. Heck, I’d even throw Harley’s prototype all electric into the mix if it were not for the fact that a motorcycle has to be available for purchase in order to qualify for our bike of the year honours. All in all, at the risk of sounding like I’m bragging, it was a really great year to be a motorcycle journalist. So out of all the bikes we sampled this season, which one was worthy enough to win our coveted bike of the year? Well, tune in to find out who takes home the prize as the winner of our 2015 Motorcycle Experience Bike of the Year!

Also this week OPP Constable Anthony Mann proves that practice does indeed make perfect. While on this season’s Ultimate Ride Norm Wells and I discuss our next Ultimate destination. Then, during our “Winging It” segment Ken Edick discusses why he rides while during “Shifting Gears,” I throw a leg over Harley Davidson’s all electric Livewire.

For those of you joining us at Wings over the County next Saturday, September 26... see you there!

Keep your right hand cranked!

Dave

New Macklemore video for Downtown is Amazeballs

First time I've been able to use the newly added to the dictionary word - amazeballs - in a post!

I think this new video by Macklemore for "Downtown" fits the bill nicely.

Motorcycles and mopeds and a whole lot of craziness! Check it out.

Episode 9 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

On this edition of Motorcycle Experience, the pride of the OPP gets a taste of the real world, while on this season's Ultimate Ride we reach our ultimate destination, Percé Rock.  Then, during our "Winging It" segment, touring expert Ken Edick creates his own isolation booth and Shifting Gears editor Jenn Martin takes a closer look at high tech rain gear.

But before we get to all that, we'll be road testing BMW's S1000R. This sharp edge, fly by wire, real world street fighter was sent into the ring late last year, and at first blush the tale of the tape would suggest that this is a stripped down version of BMW's hugely successful racetrack ready super sport, the S1000 double R.  But that would really be selling this bike short because this thing is impressive.  Sure there's ponies under the fairing in the R (a proclaimed 160 in all) and, yes, the weight is there (it's three kilo's more then a double R) but what really impresses here is the usable power delivery and the electronic goodies.  It comes with the now de rigueur ABS braking and accompanying ASC (Automatic Stability Control) but you also get the combination knock-out punch that comes with selectable, on the fly, DDC electronic power delivery mode designed for both wet and dry conditions.  And there's selectable DDC, electronic suspension set-up modes and if that's not enough leading edge technology for you, you can also order the S1000R with an HP gear shift assist probe... it's all pretty trick.

Also, remember to mark your calendar for Saturday, September 26 for our Wings over the County event celebrating the Gold Wing's 40th Anniversary.

Episode 7 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN

hree years after launching their current generation’s Super Tenere, Yamaha revised their top of the line ES with some thoughtful upgrades that totally enhanced what was already a well respected big bore adventure touring package.  In the engine department, horsepower was bumped a few ponies, while real world comfort was addressed by adding a tool-less adjustable windscreen, heated grips, and two position seat.  But the biggest improvement on this generation Tenere definitely comes through on the electronic management side of the equation.  With the ES version, you now get on the fly electric traffic suspension adjustment.  Out on the highway, no problem, soften it up for comfort.  Hitting the gravel?  No problem there either; with the touch of a button you can stiffen up the suspension for better control.  The ES also has a new cruise control system, two switchable engine power delivery maps, along with a three mode traction control system.  And there’s ABS.  Lots of bells and whistles to be sure!

Also this week, the pride of the OPP tackles a slalom course in the snow. While on this week’s Ultimate Ride we head out for our ultimate destination from St. Anne des Monts in Quebec. Then, during our winging-it segment, touring expert Ken Edick requests a luggage upgrade before taking flight.  And shifting gears editor Jenn Martin takes a closer look at exhaust system advancements.

Don't forget to add our 2nd annual Wings Over The County event to your calendar.  We'll be hosting the Gold Wing themed event at Hillier Creek Estates winery our homebase in Prince Edward County so mark your calendars for September 26.  For more details check outmotorcycleexperience.ca

Episode 6 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

The 2nd annual Wings Over The County is coming up on Saturday, September 26th. Motorcycle Experience and Honda Canada are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Honda Gold Wing.   It's a free event, registration starts at 8am, and factory demos of the Honda cruiser and touring line-up run from 9am to 3pm.  The event will be held at Hillier Creek Estates winery in Prince Edward County, and in addition to the factory demo rides there will be seminars, prizes and a raffle raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project.  Hope to see you there!

Meanwhile, on the second airing of episode 6 on TSN... when it comes to complete, no gaps motorcycle line-ups I'm pretty sure Honda Canada holds the current record for building virtually something for everyone; from 50CC Giorno and Ruckuses all the way up to 850 CC Gold Wings and everything in between.  And speaking of in-between, meet the meat in the middle, Honda's all new CBR 650F.  A true new-from-the-ground-up middle-weight all 'rounder that proves there's nothing boring about sandwiches.  I mean, check out the 650CC inline four which Honda boasts has been tuned for both fuel economy and low-end punch.  And there's a very snazzy four into one under-slung, tucked under a trick aluminum swing arm out back.  Honda Canada recently invited a pile of Motorcycle journalists down to Roebling Road Raceway in Georgia to sample the 650F amongst a platter of other more sporting models.  And quicker than you can say pass the mustard, much to everyone's surprise, the 650F turned out to be pretty tasty out on the racetrack.

Then, on this edition of Motorcycle Experience OPP constable Anthony Mann tackles a slalom course in the snow.  While on this season's Ultimate Ride, after two solid days of riding we 'call it' just south of St. Anne des Monts in Quebec.  Then, during our Winging It segment, touring expert Ken Edick significantly updates his Gold Wing's factory tool kit, and Shifting Gears editor Jenn Martin takes a closer look at all that technology.

Keep your right hand cranked!

Dave

Episode 5 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

When it comes to motorcycle touring Honda Canada knows a thing or two about travelling really long distances on two wheels.  Seventeen years after launching the first Valkyrie, Honda decided it was high time to roll out another head turning, aggressively styled power cruiser based on their newest generation Wing.  So for this week's road test, original Valkyrie owner Dave Fox sizes up Honda's latest version of the classic cruiser.

Then, on this session of the Ultimate Yamaha Challenge, OPP Constable Anthony Mann makes some abrupt turns. While on this season’s Ultimate Ride we find the perfect pull over spot during our Gaspé tour.  On our “Winging It” segment, touring expert Ken Edick has some expert advice on avoiding saddle sores. Then “Shifting Gears” editor Jenn Martin flips the thermostat with some great advice on warm weather riding apparel.

Keep your right hand cranked!

Episode 10 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

On this edition of Motorcycle Experience OPP officer Anthony Mann performs some parking lot magic, while on this season's Ultimate Ride a "pierced rock" captures our imagination. During our "Winging It" segment, Ken Edick and myself talk about taking flight with a helmet that will go the distance then Shifting Gears editor Jenn Martin takes a close look at the accessories you'll need to tackle the concrete jungle.

For our road test this week we're reviewing the latest iteration of Honda's classic touring machine, the Gold Wing. It's a motorcycle that's been forty years in the making; a one thousand eight hundred and thirty-two CC big six road-eating machine. A motorcycle that first came to life in 1975 as a liquid-cooled one thousand CC horizontally opposed four that set the standard for what would become known today as the luxury touring market. A motorcycle that serves a passionate group of dedicated die-hard owners who just love to spend all their accrued vacation time riding under the canopy of the open sky while wrapped in a bubble of wind-negating comfort. Giving us his take on Honda's flagship motorcycle is former Gold Wing owner, current wine maker, and host of our 2nd annual Wings Over The County event at Hillier Creek Estates winery in Prince Edward County, Kemp Stewart.

Enjoy the show!

Episode 8 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN

On this week's road test we're riding Harley-Davidson's Road Glide Special. If you've toured around a Harley-Davidson dealership recently then you know all about their touted Project Rushmore initiative. Thanks to that three-year long customer survey, Harley says their slick bagger, the Road Glide Special, has received over one hundred refinements including small things like one touch latches and more intuitive hand control switches, and big impressive items like a multi-function, twenty-five watt, colour touch screen boom box info-tainment system and day-maker LED headlamp. Of course, powering the Road Glide Special is Harley's air-cooled, high output, twin cam 103 cubic inch V-twin with its six speed overdrive transmission. But added to the secret sauce this year is a linked ABS Brembo braking system, a revised handle bar, fairing, hard-bag, fenders, wheels...everything you look at has been tweaked, trimmed or breathed on right down to the super low saddle, which now sits at an impressive 695mm, or 27.4in, off the ground.

Also on this week's show, the pride of the OPP tackles Matt's racetrack, while on this season's Ultimate Ride we pull over en route to our ultimate destination, Gaspé, Quebec. Then, during our "Winging It" segment, touring expert Ken Edick reviews the passenger manifest on his Honda Gold Wing.

For a little added perspective on this season's "Winging It" feature, here's a bike review we did with Colin Fraser ten years ago when the Gold Wing was turning 30.

Episode 7 of Motorcycle Experience on TSN!

Three years after launching their current generation's Super Tenere, Yamaha revised their top of the line ES with some thoughtful upgrades that totally enhanced what was already a well respected big boar adventure touring package.  In the engine department, horsepower was bumped a few ponies, while real world comfort was addressed by adding a tool-less adjustable windscreen, heated grips, and two position seat.  But the biggest improvement on this generation Tenere definitely comes through on the electronic management side of the equation.  With the ES version, you now get on the fly traffic suspension adjustment.  Out on the highway, no problem, soften it up for comfort.  Hitting the gravel?  No problem there either; with the touch of a button you can stiffen up the suspension for better control.  The ES also has a new cruise control system, two switchable engine power delivery maps along with a three mode traction control system.  And there's ABS.  Lots of bells and whistles to be sure but how does it all work?  Well here now is a serious adventure riding enthusiast and loyal view, James Simzer.

On this edition of Motorcycle Experience the pride of the OPP tackles a slalom course in the snow. While on this season's Ultimate Ride we head out for our ultimate destination from St. Anne des Monts in Quebec. Then, during our winging-it segment touring expert Ken Edick requests a luggage upgrade before taking flight.  And shifting gears editor Jen Martin takes a closer look at exhaust system advancements.  All this, and more, as Motovan presents Motorcycle Experience.

And consider this your official "Save the Date" for our 2nd annual Wings Over The County event.  We'll be hosting the Gold Wing themed event again this year at our homebase in Prince Edward County so mark your calendars for September 26.  More details to follow!

While on this season's Ultimate Ride we find the perfect pull over spot during our Gaspé tour. On our "Winging It" segment, touring expert Ken Edick has some expert advice on avoiding saddle sores. New book from Jeremy Kroeker

Check out the new book from Canadian motorcyclist and author Jeremy Kroeker. Well known for his first book Motorcycle Therapy: A Canadian Adventure in Central America. His newest book is titled: Through Dust and Darkness - A Motorcycle Journey of Fear and Faith in the Middle East.

It's published by Rocky Mountain Books and according to them Jeremy Kroeker is a Mennonite with a motorcycle. When his seemingly unflinching faith in a Christian worldview begins to shift, Kroeker hops on his bike to seek answers from another perspective. After shipping his ride to Europe, Kroeker discovers that the machine wobbles back and forth worse than his own opinions about spirituality. Still, he caries on, oscillating through Europe—Germany, Austria, Croatia, Albania—and into the Middle East - Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and, ultimately, Iran.

It is there, in the theocratic nation of Iran, that Kroeker finds himself on a forbidden visit to a holy Muslim Shrine. Once inside, invisible hands reach into his chest and rip from his heart a sincere prayer, his first in many years. And God hears that prayer. For before Kroeker can escape Iran, God steals into his hotel room one night to threaten him with death. At least, that's one way to look at it.

In the end, Kroeker comes to accept uncertainty. What does he really know anyway? He may always fear a God that he can't explain. Perhaps if he keeps riding, one of these days God will speak clearly. And that frightens him, too.

Why We Ride Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Now on Sale

The Why We Ride Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by composer Steven Gutheinz is now on sale. The soundtrack is available for purchase through Amazon and iTunes and can also be heard on various streaming services including Rdio, Rhapsody, Spotify and more.

“Music plays such an important role in film by setting the mood and conveying emotions,” said Director/Producer Bryan H. Carroll. “Steven’s work on the Why We Ride score is a piece of art in its own right and we couldn’t be happier with how the audio and visuals came together in the film.”

The score was written by film and television composer Steven Gutheinz and was performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. It runs just over an hour and twenty minutes in length and the 24 tracks follow the progression of the movie.

Click here to download on Amazon
Click here to download on iTunes

“We’re excited to share Steven’s wonderful score with our fans,” said Producer James Walker. “Steven’s music works perfectly with the visuals in the film, and paints such vivid pictures that it is extremely enjoyable to listen to this work independently from the film as well.”

“I’m inspired by visuals, and there were so many great visual moments in this film and, of course, they all involve a motorcycle,” said Composer Steven Gutheinz. “Structure is such a huge part of composing music, and to see a film laid out like that and to hear the director describe in detail his vision for the music was inspiring.”

Motorcycle documentary “Fifty Years of Kicks” to be released online

We heard from the folks at MotoJournalism that they'll be releasing an online documentary this week! Having watched the trailer we're really looking forward to watching the full length version. I hope I'm riding like those guys when I'm their age!

Full Details:

Motorcycle documentary “Fifty Years of Kicks” to be released online

•20 min video documentary profiling two experienced motorcycle riders
•Will be released online free Thursday 12th April 2012 at motojournalism.com

Fifty Years of Kicks is a 20 minute video documentary featuring two experienced motorcycle riders who continue to do what they love despite age and health issues.

There are plenty of videos focusing on teenagers and young adults, pushing their sport to the limit. With Fifty Years of Kicks, we want to show older adults pushing their bodies to the limit. Instead of being inspired by the exploits of 18 year olds in extreme sports no longer within our grasp, we find ourselves being inspired by older people participating in activities typically reserved for the young. Rather than lamenting, “I wish I could have tried that when I was young”, we want to say, “I want to be like them when I grow up!”

Fifty Years of Kicks, is a collaboration between Motojournalism and Traction off-road e-rag, and is our first attempt at video production. The documentary was shot in a true “beg, borrow or steal” manner. The video and sound equipment used to film it was substandard, but generously loaned by colleagues and friends. The subjects and location owners were very accommodating with their limited time.

We would like to continue to produce episodes profiling the interesting characters in and around motorcycling and are looking for sponsors to make that possible. We want to tell the stories of the people who participate, the reasons why these people engage in a sport with inherent risks and dangers, and why they can’t live without these two wheeled machines.

Jordan Szoke appearing in racer reality TV show

Brantford Ontario native and motorcycle racer Jordan Szoke will soon be appearing in a reality TV program called Hot Lap. While he's typically not a fan of reality TV programs this is a little different.

This program allows amateur riders a chance to be the fastest at one of 10 tracks in North America throughout 2011. The show follows the trials and tribulations of the amateur riders and either progress through the show or crash.

Szoke won't be doing the racing, the seven-time Parts Canada Superbike Champ is far from an amateur! He'll be functioning as team coach and technical adviser for the show. He'll be on site to assist riders set up their bikes and offer advice.

Shooting begins during the International Motorcycle Supershow, Jan. 6-8, at Toronto's International Centre. Locations for the races or what channel will air the show haven't been announced yet.

Szoke indicates that he sees Hot Lap as "a great chance for amateurs to experience the life of professional riders, which is more than just racing."

How NOT to do a Stoppie

Should you be so inclined as to try performing a stoppie take a little knowledge from the experience of this guy. One handed cross up stoppies are NOT a good idea!

Least he wasn't going too fast. Bet he's glad his buddies captured this and posted it on YouTube for him.

If Ken Block rode a motorcycle

If Ken Block - that DC Shoe guy who scored himself a WRC ride by posting a hugely popular Gymkhana video (google it) - rode a motorcycle instead of driving a car it might look a little something like what this guy Jorian Ponomareff is doing.

Impressive bike control!

MotoGP at its finest

If you liked "Faster" you'll probably love the followup "Fastest." After previewing the trailer I can't wait to watch it. MotoGP riders have incredible skill and bravely face 18 races a year in an incredibly dangerous sport. Even if you've never seen MotoGP you can't help but be fascinated by this!

Here's a description of the film by the folks at "Fastest:"

From filmmaker Mark Neale who made "Faster" comes "Fastest," a spectacular fast paced documentary film full of thrills, spills and highlights, charting the 2010 Moto GP World Championship series. Valentino Rossi strives to win his 8th eighth premier class world championships, fighting off the young guns of Jorge Lorenzo, Ben Spies, Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner in an amazing season of racing, capped off by Lorenzo's championship. With unprecedented behind-the-scenes access and never before seen angles, this true cinematic experience charts the highs and lows of all sixteen races, including Rossi's career-threatening crash at Mugello and his spectacular return to racing just 41 days later at the German Grand Prix, and includes his debut on the Ducati for the 2011 season.

radX/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team finishes 2011 season in spectacular fashion

The August 20/21 weekend marked history for the BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike team, with Brett McCormick earning BMW the Parts Canada Superbike Championship crown on Saturday, while Matt McBride, Francis Martin and Andrew Nelson rode their privately-enterd BMW S1000RRs to podium finishes during the doubleheader weekend concluding the 2011 CSBK series.

McCormick’s BMW factory teammate, Michael Ferreira, led Sunday’s final round race early on however a flat front tire caused him to crash entering turn 5. Unhurt, Ferreira remounted and managed to bring his radX/BMW home in 5th place. Hot on the heels of the podium finishers, Andrew Nelson rode to a 4th-place finish on Sunday after completing the podium in 3rd the previous day on his privately-entered BMW S1000RR, while McCormick’s BMW factory teammate Mike Ferreira rounded up the BMW onslaught right behind him in 5th-place.

The overall CSBK Championship results also reverberated with the largest roster of BMW top-ten finishes in the history of the series, all on S1000RRs:

1st - Brett McCormick
3rd – Andrew Nelson
4th – Mike Ferreira
7th – Francis Martin
9th – Matt McBride
10th – Rob Busby

BMW Motorrad Canada was also honoured with the Canadian Superbike Championship “Team of the Year” award, sponsored by Inside Motorcycles.

With a near-perfect season, winning every race in the series except the final, Brett McCormick battled furiously with his series rival Jordan Szoke throughout the CSBK schedule to secure the well-earned win and provide spectators with one of the mostly hotly-contested series to date.

Having set a new lap record of 1 minute 20.8 seconds on Friday, McCormick, continued his assault on Sunday, finally challenging the ultimate race winner Jordan Szoke for the lead entering the first corner of the final lap, but unfortunately crashing in the process.

Chris Duff, Marketing and race team manager for BMW Motorrad Canada summed up the feelings of the radX/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team on the season’s results, stating “ our primary goal was to win the championship this year because we knew we had the package to do it, however winning six straight races was an unexpected bonus and a testament to the amazing capabilities of the BMW S1000RR."
BMW Motorrad Canada would like to recognize the following sponsors for their support and contribution to the success of this year’s racing program:

- High Fidelity HDTV - radX
- MOTOREX Oil of Switzerland
- DP Brakes
- Joe Rocket Canada
- Hotbodies
- Acceleration Racing
- Hindle Exhausts
- Pirelli
- Original BMW Parts

BMW and I decided to make one last trip across the country to share new travel stories and encourage others to create their own motorcycle adventure fun. Chris Pfeiffer BMW G450X vs. a BobSled

What happens when you mix one bobled track, one bobled descending the track, and Chris Pheiffer on his BMW 450X going UP the track - at the same time?  Pure entertainment!

I don't know who's crazier - the BMW sponsored bobsled riders or Chris Pheiffer.

Urban trials riding - This will get you in trouble! - or worse

This definitely falls under the "DO NOT TRY THIS" category. You'd surely end up in some trouble with the law if you did - not to mention seriously injured/dead!  This is Monster Energy's - Fred Crosset of Belgium riding around his hometown.

Trials riding takes a great deal of skill and balance something this rider clearly has.  He's a multi-year trial champ in Belgium and the USA.  It's a sport that's typically done far away from the city streets. Not so in this video.

Mythbusters - test the BMW S1000RR tablecloth trick

Remember that BMW S1000RR commercial where they pulled a tablecloth out from under some plates?  No? Well, here's a little refresh for you below.  Think they incorporated some tricks to accomplish that feat?  The popular TV program, Mythbusters wanted to see if they could duplicate it.

Admittedly, they didn't try it with a BMW S1000RR though, instead they've used a Erik Buell Racing bike - a modified 1125R.

To see if they bust the myth check it out HERE:

Maddison records another world first jump

Australian stunt Motocrosser Robbie Maddison has recorded another world first.  He jumped over the 85-metre wide Corinth Canal at height of nearly 100 metres in Greece on Thursday. He described the biggest challenge as dealing with the many different surfaces leading to the ramp -- grass to concrete to wood to asphalt to carpet.

The Corinth Canal, was built in 1893 and apparently many motocrossers have wanted to jump it - but Maddison is the first to do it. At the highest point Maddison was 95 metres above the canal surface. That's over 300 feet up for you non-metric folks!

It's a pretty crazy jump. Judge for yourself!

New Virtual Riding TV video has been posted

Our friend Jeff (Founder/Executive Producer) over at Virtual Riding TV has posted a new high definition video of a sunset motorcycle ride on the Sea to Sky Highway between Porteau Cove and Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada.

For those unacquainted with this area, Highway 99 is one of the most scenic roads in BC, especially from Vancouver to Whistler.  Portions of this stretch of road were redone for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, and now the Sea to Sky corridor is a motorcyclist's dream filled with spectacular scenery. Don't take our word for it though. Check out the video below.

The video is appearing in several spots on the web, including YouTube, Daily Motion, and the tourism British Columbia website.  You can check out this new video below but make sure you visit the VRIDETV website to see all their great (and free!) video's.

Ride a Yamaha - iPhone App

The subtitles in the video are in Japanese, and hey, we don't know what it says but it it looks like Yamaha has an iPhone app that simulates the sound of riding a YZF-R1 or YZ450F.  You can blip the throttle with the twist of a wrist or put it in driving mode to simulate the sound of actual driving.

I could see this being entertaining for oh, about 30 seconds or so.

BMW Motorrad Canada and Rush HD jump into Canadian Superbike for 2010

BMW Motorrad Canada, confirming that it will be fielding a two rider factory superbike team in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in 2010, is also pleased to announce a collaboration with Rush HD as the title sponsor of the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team.

Rush HD is Canada’s only high-octane, no fear, no limits extreme sports adventure HD channel. Rush HD is owned and operated by High Fidelity HDTV Inc., Canada’s leading HD broadcaster and production enterprise whose four all-HD channels provide Canadians with best-in-class non-fiction programming on the themes of Nature, Culture and Adventure.

In conjunction with the superbike sponsorship, the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team will be followed all season long by a documentary film crew capturing the creation and activities of a superbike team in action, for the production and broadcast of a six part one hour mini series to be shown on Rush HD this fall. John Panikkar, Rush HD’s chief executive, said “Rush HD is delighted to be title sponsor of this year’s Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team. The action-adventure programming we broadcast on Rush HD is a natural fit with the action and excitement of a superbike racing series. ”

Chris Duff, Manager, Motorrad Marketing, stated, “We are thrilled to have Rush HD onboard as we prepare and race the most exciting new entry in the 2010 Canadian Superbike season”.

Both riders from BMW’s 2009 team, Francis Martin and Michael Ferreira, will once again be the riders in the hot seat, tasked with bringing a superbike victory to BMW Motorrad Canada in 2010.

Francis Martin is no stranger to racing in the Superbike Class having won two Canadian Superbike Championships in 1999 and 2005 respectively along with another litre bike title in 2002, the Pro Open Sportbike Championship. “I'm very exited about the next season and have been waiting for this moment for a long time” says Francis Martin. “Now we have the bike to win and the tuner with whom I won my last championship”.

Michael Ferreira will be making his Superbike Class debut in 2010 and continues his streak as the longest serving rider on the team after racing the BMW boxer twins in Canadian Thunder and Pro Sportbike classes since 2007. Ferreira, the winner of the 2006 RACE Pro 600 Sportbike Championship, will not have any trouble transferring his skills back onto an in-line four race bike from the twins he recently has competed on.

When asked about his thoughts of racing in the Superbike Class, Ferreira had this to say, "From the day I started racing, my dream was always to race in the premier class against the best riders in the country. Three years ago I was blessed with an opportunity to race for BMW and it’s been an experience of a lifetime with what now will be the highlight of my racing career. I couldn't be happier than to share this experience with the brand that has had so much faith in me."

Joining the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this season is famed Canadian superbike tuner Patrice Goyette of Mobile PG. Patrice recently was the main crew chief behind Clint McBain of Acceleration Racing the past two years and has a previous relationship with Francis Martin from when they won the 2005 Canadian Superbike Championship.

“Staying with our same two riders this year was always the plan when we talked about jumping into the Superbike Class” said Chris Duff, Manager Motorrad Marketing. “Now that we have also been able to add a huge asset in Patrice, this should show race fans our commitment to winning races in 2010.”

Also partnering with the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this year will be three new sponsors: Joe Rocket, Hotbodies Bodywork and Hindle Exhausts. Joe Rocket returns to BMW after a three year hiatus and Bruce Parker, President of Joe Rocket Canada enthused: “ we are excited about renewing our relationship with BMW Motorrad Canada and looking forward to BMW adding to our history of Rocket Racing success.”

With the launch of the new S1000RR, BMW Motorrad now has the arsenal needed to fight for superbike championships worldwide and Canada is no exception.

The 2010 Canadian Superbike Championship begins with Round 1 from the ICAR facility at Mirabel Quebec May 28-30 and then continues for Rounds 2 & 3 at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park June 24-27. Rounds 4 & 5 will be the annual mid-summer Mosport Doubleheader Weekend July 8-11 and the final two rounds, Rounds 6 & 7 will take place August 5-8 from Shubenacadie Nova Scotia. Follow all rounds of the Canadian Superbike Championship on TSN HD in 2010.

Ducati Xerox team to experimate with live streaming from the garage at Imola

During the upcoming World Superbike weekend, to be held at the Italian circuit of Imola from 25th to 27th September, the Ducati Xerox Team, in collaboration with Ducati.com, will allow fans from around the world the chance to see right to the heart of the action, by providing live streaming direct from Noriyuki Haga’s garage on both Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September.

A brand new experience, with the live and uncut footage undoubtedly spiking the interest of the countless passionate fans who are following the Superbike racing as the season comes to a thrilling climax. This is a way for the loyal fans, sponsors and Ducatisti to participate, allowing them a “fly on the wall” view of the unique, adrenalin-fuelled world of the motorcycle racer and his team.

With only three races left, and with both of the Ducati Xerox riders, Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio, in the running for the rider’s title, the experiment is thus implemented for the very first time at Imola, which is of course hosting what is the “home round” for Ducati.

Never before has a motorcycle racing team initiated such a project and, if all goes to plan at Imola, the service will also be available during the final two rounds, at Magny-Cours and Portimao.

A web-cam, positioned this time in Haga’s pit garage, will be activated between 14.00 and 17.00 on Saturday and between 09.00 and 17.00 on Sunday, allowing users to log on to the official Ducati site - www.ducati.com – and watch live streaming of “Nitro-Nori” and his technical team in action during Superpole, Sunday warm-up and the all-important races.

For more information, log on to www.ducati.com from Monday 21st September. The Ducati Xerox Team awaits you at Imola!

Motorcycle Crash Tech debuts on National Geographic HD September 17th

Cry Havoc productions - the same folks who brought you Twist the Throttle - have a new video on the National Geographic channel. It features a behind-the-scenes look at the new technologies being used to avoid motorcycle crashes, prevent injuries, or even death when a racer or rider does go down.

According to Cry Havoc it'll air on the following days and times:

  • Thursday Sept. 17, 2009 at 9:00 PM ET
  • Friday Sept. 18, 2009 at 12:00 AM ET
  • Thursday Sept. 24, 2009 at 5:00 PM ET

  • UPDATE: We received an email from a reader in Quebec who mentioned that perhaps not all Cable networks will air the Show. They attempted to find the program on the Videotron Cable schedule ( for Quebec Cable networks) and website and couldn't find it. So there might be some cable show scheduling variations or that the show is not necessarily presented on Canadian television.

Let's hope it's showing in whatever part of Canada you're in! Or that National Geographic might put it on their website for viewing.

From a press release issued by Cry Havoc Productions

New Motorcycle Documentary Premieres on the National Geographic Channel September 17, 2009 at 9PM ET

“Motorcycle Crash Tech” is an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at the new technologies being used to avoid motorcycle crashes, and prevent injuries or even death when a racer or rider does go down.

Exclusive interviews with racer Neil Hodgson and the legendary Giacomo Agostini describe first-hand what goes through a racer’s mind the moment they know they’re going to crash and vividly recount just how deadly racing was in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Combining rare archival footage from years past as well as contemporary AMA racing coverage, the film explains the differences between high-sides and low-sides and the extreme forces involved in both types of crashes.

The film captures stunning action photography of world-class test riders Vito Guareschi (Alpinestars, Nolan, and Ducati) and Umberto Rumiano (MV Agusta) in action during what are normally closed test sessions of new riding gear and bikes. Brembo factory riders are also filmed testing the company’s newest brakes on twisting Italian mountain roads and performing incredible braking tests on Brembo’s private test track.

Produced by Cry Havoc Productions, an award winning documentary film company specializing in Moto related films, “Motorcycle Crash Tech” will premiere on September 17, 2009 at 9PM ET on the National Geographic Channel.

Filmed in 1080i high-definition and 5.1 digital surround sound, “Motorcycle Crash Tech” takes viewers on an extraordinary journey across Northern Italy. With rare access to the R & D facilities and research departments at Alpinestars, Brembo, Nolan, and MV Agusta, the film chronicles the very latest technologies being used in motorcycle riding gear, boots, helmets, brakes, and the bikes themselves to make racing and riding safer.

Motorcycle Experience - successful 09 season

We received word from Dave Hatch, host of Motorcycle Experience, about the show having wrapped up for the season (along with some details on viewership numbers). Dave is also promoting the 7th Annual Ride To Remember that's coming up on Saturday, June 6th - it's a fundraiser for Camp Trillium and looks like it's going to be a fun event for motorcycle riders and families.

    Full details below:

Motorcycle Experience has now wrapped up yet another successful broadcast season on TSN. As you know, there has been a lot of news in the Canadian press these past months, lamenting the fact that overall television viewership is down. Well we can tell you that certainly wasn’t the case with Motorcycle Experience this year, in fact, just the opposite. This spring, as we celebrated our 20th year on the air, our overall audience ratings actually grew by 15%. We are very happy to report that over 1.3 million viewers tuned in from all across Canada to see the show. So…let us just say “thanks” to everyone who tuned us in and helped to make the show once again a major success!

And speaking of success…one final piece of business for this year, don’t forget that you are more than welcome to join us next week at our 7th Annual Ride To Remember. If there is any way you can ride to our annual motorcycle celebration dedicated to raising funds for Camp Trillium, we encourage you to do so. This is always a great event and this year we are remembering our dear friend, Maxime Mercier. Here’s what we have in store for you this year.

Toyota Truck presents 7th Annual Ride to Remember!

Everything is now set to go next week for this popular motorcycle rally. This annual fund raising event for Camp Trillium celebrating all things on two wheels, has so far helped Motorcycle Experience and the local Prince Edward Fire Fighters and their wives donate over $80,000 dollars to Camp Trillium.

This year the Ride to Remember will touch down for one day only at the Picton Airport on Saturday June 6 and once again our partners BMW, Suzuki, Honda, Buell and Harley-Davidson will be inviting licensed motorcycle riders to sample their new motorcycle lineups on a scenic demo ride through Prince Edward County. In keeping with our desire to keep the Ride to Remember a family oriented celebration, this year we’ve added two new and exciting features: the Buell Stunt Riding Show and a massive R2R Classic Car Show. There will also be the popular R2R Silent Auction that now boasts over ten thousand dollars in new motorcycle related items and while visitors check out the great deals they will also be able to enjoy the 6 Live Bands we have performing on site all day, in the Currahs Café entertainment zone.

Many eastern Ontario motorcycle dealers will also be on hand, displaying the very latest in riding gear and accessories. Back by popular demand is the Yamaha Riding Academy. The Riding Academy is a popular mini bike training area for children aged six to twelve! The folks from Yamaha provide the instructors, bikes and all the riding gear, and no experience is required. Soooooo…..

If you want to keep your feet on the pegs and your right hand cranked check out the R2R website at www.ridetoremember.ca for more details, and get set to ride next week up to the Picton Airport for the a day you will never forget!

We look forward to seeing you there…

Ducati Hypermotard used as "Moto-Terminator" models for Terminator Salvation

Cupertino, Calif (May 7, 2009) – Ducati North America announced today that moviegoers and fans of the highly anticipated actioner “Terminator Salvation” will see Ducati’s popular Hypermotard 1100 take new form as Moto-Terminators when the movie hits theaters May 21.

“This movie is all about technology taken to such a high level that it becomes an art form,” said “Terminator Salvation” director McG. “To me that fits as a description of Ducati. The bikes came through like champions.” McG was so fond of the Hypermotard he actually purchased one of the four bikes used on the New Mexico set.

Computer graphics were used to create the Moto-Terminators based on the design and performance of the Hypermotard, however the actual bikes were used for all the stunt riding in the film. Ducati also collaborated with Warner Bros. to develop a custom trailer for “Terminator Salvation,” which shows exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the Hypermotard scenes.

“The Hypermotard is becoming a real celebrity in its own right. This is its second appearance in a major motion picture this year,” said Ducati North America CEO Michael Lock. The Hypermotard was also featured in Warner Bros. Pictures hit comedy “Yes Man,” with Jim Carrey.

The custom trailer for “Terminator Salvation” will be shown in Ducati dealerships nationwide as well as on the Ducati website and Facebook page.

The fourth installment in the blockbuster “Terminator” film franchise, “Terminator Salvation” is a presentation of The Halcyon Company. McG directed the film from a screenplay by John Brancato & Michael Ferris. “Terminator Salvation” was produced by Moritz Borman, Jeffrey Silver, Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson. Peter D. Graves, Dan Lin, Jeanne Allgood, Joel B. Michaels, Mario F. Kassar and Andrew G. Vajna served as executive producers. The film stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, Jane Alexander and Helena Bonham Carter. “Terminator Salvation” is being distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures. Columbia Pictures is distributing the film in most international territories (excluding South Korea and select Middle East territories).

    Sons of Anarchy filming now

A report on the FX network’s site indicates that 'Sons of Anarchy' has reportedly begun filming its second season. Creator Kurt Sutter, has indicated that the follow-up to its successful debut year will air around the same time this year, which should mean it comes online sometime around September.

Shooting for the first of the 13-episode order will wrap up in mid-May according to TV Guide.

The network reported another addition to the cast on the upcoming season. They had already announced that Henry Rollins will appear in a six-episode arc but now Adam Arkin will join the cast this year too.

The SAMCRO* (The Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original) club will run into some dealings with Adam Arkin, who plays a white supremacist for a several episode arc.

    * You know, I watched the whole first season and just learned that little piece of information researching this. They frequently say SAMCRO in the dialog of the show. Guess I never really thought about it.

Sons of Anarchy has some 5.4 million people to thank for a second season. That's how many tuned in to watch the outlaw motorcycle gang.

Sons of Anarchy stars Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal and Ron Perlman

Winter motorbike ride from Toronto to Key West, Florida

Steve Corke, a motorcyclist from Toronto had a idea... he wanted to ride to Key West to meet up with his girlfriend. A long ride yes, but perfectly doable. It was Valentine's day and -8 celsius when he left Toronto on his Suzuki, V-Strom though. Yup, that makes it a little more interesting!

He documented the trip and now you can download it for free via his website.

Here's a few words from Steve explaining the trip:

Key West Clutch is a documentary movie about a winter motorbike ride from Toronto, Canada to the southern most point of the USA; Key West, Florida. The goal was to ride from the bitter cold of Canada to the tropical climate of the Florida Keys to meet my girlfriend (who took a flight down) and obviously get a tan in my speedo. To Key West was 2,871 km one way and it was minus 8 degrees celcius when I left...

    4,500 kilometers on a 49cc scooter!

How far would you think you could reasonably go riding 2-up on a 49cc scooter (2-up is just another way of saying 2 people on the same scooter)?  A few hundred kilometers maybe?

Well - a young Canadian couple recently went on a ride that might just destroy your image of what's possible on a 49cc scooter.  On September 2, 2008 they set out from Vancover, BC and started heading east.  Where did they stop?

Eleven days after their journey began they stopped in Barrie, Ontario.  That's about 4,500 kilometers just in case you're wondering.

Their vehicle of choice was a 49cc 2007 Yamaha C3 scooter! I think that might possibly be some kind of a record.

The top speed of a scooter isn't terribly fast, particularly on hills, and with two riders on board. Be sure to read the daily logs.  There's some pretty humurous stuff in there.

Some key facts about the trip:

Money spent on Gas = $153.76
Liters of Gas bought = 115.68
    Kilometers traveled = 4486kms
Average gas consumption = 109 MPG or 2.58litres/100kms

See all the crazy adventures unfold on their website. They've made some posts about each day of the adventure and posted some pictures and video.

    Check it out!

Henry Rollins to guest star on Sons of Anarchy

Don't know if you watched the 13 episodes of FX drama series Sons of Anarchy last year but Grammy® Award-winning musician and actor Henry Rollins is set to guest star in the second season, which is scheduled to return to the network in the fall.

Nick Grad, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, FX Networks indicates that Rollins will play a new antagonist in the show’s fictional town of Charming, California. He'll pose a deadly threat to the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club and be featured in six episodes.

It's a bit of a Soprano's on motorcycles drama - a 1%er type club. If you can't stand violence on television, this might not be the show for you.

I was planning on tuning in again next season anyway but the appearance of Henry Rollins in 6 episodes should be a great new addition to the show.

For those who didn't watch last year -- Henry Rollins! C'mon. You've gotta watch!

Mototerminators arrive in theatres this Friday

Are you ready for Salvation? I hope so - because Termininator Salvation is coming to theatres this Friday, March 22nd.

It looks like it's going to be a blockbuster film if the new trailer featuring very appropriate industrial rock music from Nine Inch Nails and some amazing looking special effects are any indication.

The movie had a massive $200 million dollar budget. Remember when that was enough to warrant a lot of publicity? The newest trailer (trailer #3) features another sneak peak at the motorcycle terminators. Might just have to go see this one!

Some of the key cast members include: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Bryce Howard, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Common, Jadagrace.

Warner Bros. release the following plot synopsis:

Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. John must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, John and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind

Get 20 years of motorcycle tips in one DVD

Motorcycle Experience has been produced and hosted by David Hatch since 1989. In the beginning it was know as the Motorcycle Rider. The name may have changed over the course of those twenty years but the show remained dedicated to motorcycling in North America.

The 20 year mark seemed like a good time to compile the very best of two decades worth of rider tips that are featured on every episode. The result is a two-hour DVD with over 30 riding tips and advice that first aired on The Sports Network, and is aimed at helping riders to improve their open road skills.

The selected "Shifting Gears" segments feature Dave Hatch himself and Canadian superbike road racing champion Clint McBain.

The DVD is full of practical advice for real-world riding and can be yours for $19. The DVD is available exclusively at your local Suzuki dealership.

Canadian motorcycle movie - "One Week" opens Friday

We told you about "One Week" - a Canadian motorcycle movie back in late February. This is just a little reminder that the film is set to open this Friday, March 6th in 60 screens across Canada. Run time is 94 minutes.

The movie was written and directed by Michael McGowan on a budget of just over $2 million. The marketing budget was 1.2 million, most of which is a loan against future receipts.

It showcases some of Canada's fantastic scenery and musical talent (A bit of Sam Roberts and Wintersleep in the trailer alone!). All that, AND motorcycles. Tell your significant other it's a love story, or a motorcycle story - whichever one will get them to the theater!

It's the story of Ben (starting Vancouver born Joshua Jackson), who has just been told he has stage IV cancer, and has little hope of surviving. He resists going into treatment immediately and instead heads out on a cross-country motorcycle odyssey from Toronto to Tofino, B.C. on a Norton Commando.

    A Canadian motorcycle movie

"One Week" is coming to theatres on March 6th. According to the movie website here's a little synopsis of the film:

When a young man is confronted with his mortality, he takes a cross-country road trip on a vintage motorcycle. One Week tells the story of Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson), in his mid-twenties, who flees from the confines of his life—an impending marriage, a job he’s not entirely happy with and a recent diagnosis—in order to attempt to live more fully. What starts off as an ill-defined venture soon morphs into a quest for the West Coast.

The director is the same one who wrote and directed "Saint Ralph." Look closely in the trailer and you'll see lots of Canadian attractions. Like the giant goose in Wawa, Ontario. I believe that's Gord Downey of the Tragically Hip making an appearance too.

And a snippet from the Director, Michael McGowan, about the movie gets to the creative reasons why he wanted to make this film:

I’ve always wanted to make a road movie. I love the serendipity that travelling without an itinerary allows. As well, I couldn’t recall a film that romanticized the feelings that I had for Canada. As one of the characters in the film says to Ben, “You live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.” We’ve seen most of the rest of the world shot very beautifully. I wanted to do the same for Canada; to create a narrative that was also a love-letter to the country.

Hover bike - Yes, only in the movies.

Okay - Not really news here but we're not so serious that we can't have a little fun!

Who amongst us wasn't a fan of Star Trek?

The real debate is not whether you like Star Trek, it's whether you think James T Kirk or Jean Luc Picard is better. By the way, Jean Luc Picard is just JLP if you're a real fan! I was always partial to Picard myself but that's just me.

The decision makers at Paramount Pictures chosen and it's Kirk over Picard for the newest Trekkie movie that'll hit the big screens in May of 09.

Enough of this jabber about Start Trek you say... what about the hover bike? Yes, you'll get to see a hover bike. Officer 924 (least that's the serial number on his face) has a chase scene with a very young Kirk.

It looks like Kirk gets to ride a more realistic 2-wheeled variety motorcycle in the film too.

Mark your calendars Trekkies! May 8th, 2009

Here's a link to the movie trailer.

One day only - Long Way down in HD on big screen

Most of you are probably already familiar with Ewan McGregor's motorcycle adventures and the TV series/book/DVD's he's done as follow-ups.

For one night only, Canadians will be able to see a two-hour, high-definition cut of Long Way Down at select Cineplex theatres, before it begins airing later this month on National Geographic Canada.

For those unfamiliar, McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman ride from John O'Groats, Scotland, to Cape Town, South Africa. Throughout the 85-day, 24,140-kilometre journey, they take in a lot of sights; from visiting villages in Malawi, Uganda and Ethiopia to watching the direction that water flows as they cross the equator. Fellow biker and cameraman Claudio von Planta comes along for the ride too, as do the producer/director team of David Alexanian and Russ Malkin, who travelled in 4x4s with a rotating support staff consisting of a medic and a guide.

Thoughts and discussions about a third expedition appear to be pointing in the direction of South America, from bottom to top. But McGregor doesn't want to rush into things. He was quoted as saying, "For my liking, they were a bit too close together the last two," he says. "They're such experiences of a lifetime, you don't want to use them all up."

All 10 hours of Long Way Down will be aired in segments starting Oct. 21 on National Geographic channel, but the condensed big-screen version shows details that no home television could match. As Alexanian says: "You see the hairs between the hairs of the gorilla."

Long Way Down will screen in 50 theatres across Canada on Oct. 15 (for details visit http://www.cineplex.com) and begins airing on National Geographic Canada on Oct. 21.
