May is Nova Scotia Motorcycle Awareness Month

capsc.JPG

On Thursday, May 1st at 11:00 at Province House (Granville St. Entrance) Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Murray Scott will read the proclamation proclaiming May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. There will also be a press release sent out that same day to all media in the province of Nova Scotia. All motorcyclists as well as the general public are invited to share in this event.

With over 14,000 licensed motorcyclists on the roads of Nova Scotia today we all need to be aware of how to share the roads. Motorcyclists in Nova Scotia are only on the roads for a few months each year so when the good weather starts we need to be alert and aware. If you drive any vehicle take the time to look twice. If you ride a motorcycle take responsibility for your own riding skills and make sure you are visible for all to see. Defensive driving skills and visibility will help everyone on the road.

In 2007 in Nova Scotia we had 12 motorcycle fatalities. Not all of these fatalities were multiple vehicle collisions. It is always unfortunate to hear about any fatalities or crashes where a rider is injured As a motorcyclist we do have a higher risk of being injured in a crash and it is up to us to first take the proper precautions for ourselves – don’t ever assume that the other vehicle driver sees you.

Be visible but drive like you are invisible.

Please contact Nancy White and the Nova Scotia Safety Council, at 454-9621 Ext 226 more information on motorcycle safety and safety courses can be found at nssafety.ns.ca
