Motorcycle Warning System device

We got an email from Giuseppe Pino Mileto - Inventor of the Motorcycle Warning System. He sent us a Press Release on the MWS which he believes has the potential to save thousands of lives.

It's a very nicely worded and official sounding Press Release but a couple problems with this system as far as I can see.  It relies greatly on the participation of 'other' motorists (non-motorcyclists) to purchase a device that has the most benefit for the motorcyclist.  It's going to be a tough sell.  Plus it warns you whenever a motorcycle is near you in a "threat range"  I doubt that motorists will want their car beeping and blinking at them whenever a motorcycle is near them.  That in itself might be a distration.

Press Release:

With the goal of decreasing the number of traffic injuries and fatalities, Giuseppe Pino Mileto has invented the Motorcycle Warning System, a device to alert drivers of motorcycles in range of their vehicles, and most importantly, their blind spots. Once adopted, this new device could help eliminate thousands of accidents every year.

With the Motorcycle Warning System (MWS), a driver is made aware of one or more approaching motorcycles from any direction. A motorcycle equipped with a MWS unit will transmit its position, velocity, and a unique identification code to any automobile also equipped with a MWS unit. If a motorcycle is in a certain specified area called the "Threat Range," the MWS unit within the automobile will alert the driver via
  a light/sound indicator.

As soon as a motorcycle is in the Threat Range, the MWS light/sound indicator in the automobile will be triggered at a moderate rate. As the motorcycle approaches closer and is a number of meters away, the light/sound indicator will signal at a faster rate.

"Most motorcycle accidents can be avoided," notes Mileto. According to the Traffic Safety Center Hurt Study, 75% of motorcycle accidents result when other vehicles fail to detect motorcycles in time to avoid an accident.

Mileto adds, "Many countries have attempted to increase motorcycle safety and awareness. The U.K., Australia and the U.S. - just to mention a few - have focused their campaigns on motorists taking more time to look for motorcycles. Unfortunately the campaigns have yet to produce sufficient results."

"While significant progress has occurred in reducing fatalities among passenger vehicle occupants, motorcycle fatalities have been rising steadily since 1997, and currently represent our Nation's greatest highway traffic safety challenge." Mary E. Peters, U.S. Secretary of Transportation, U.S. Department of Transportation Action Plan to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities, 2007.

According to the Hurt Study, less than 10% of motorcycle riders carry insurance to cover medical care or property damage. Since most motorcycle accidents involve driver error on the part of automobile drivers, the costs land heavily on those drivers.
