Canadian - Don Hatton - leaves for Dakar 2010

The day all Dakar racers fear. Scrutineering day. This year that day is December 29, 2009.

Scrutineering is where the organizers of the Dakar race go over everything with the racers. We mean everything. They review your documentation, your race vehicle, your support vehicle (if you have one), the registered members of your team. Everything. And if they find something that cannot be fixed by the time scrutineering closes you do not get to compete.

The technical inspectors review your vehicle. Does it have the proper lights, navigation equipment, adequate fuel supply, emergency water carrying capacity? Does it have the proper and authorized decals in the correct places? Are all the movable pieces, certain nuts and bolts, secured by the proper safety wire?

There is a mind boggling myriad of technical inspections any of which if the vehicle fails could cause the organizers to disallow you from competing in the race.

On top of these there are all the little things like:

- Does the competitor and all the support team members have a valid passport good till June 2010. If not, go home.
- Does the vehicle have the proper registration and insurance – originals only please. If not, go home.
- Does your helmet meet current safety standards. If not, go home

There are some 18 different inspection stations that the competitor, his documentation and his vehicle must pass through to get final approval. Then they are allowed to get their time card and target time (time they will start the race on race day) and enter the Parc Ferme (secured parking area for the vehicles)

Scrutineering day. The day the Dakar competitors fear for a good reason.

Husqvarna Canada Announces New Off-Road Team for 2010

December 11, 2009 – Toronto, ON - On the heels of the announcement that Husqvarna Corporation has chosen Barrett Marketing Group (BMG) as the new Canadian distributor of their motorcycle products, Husqvarna Canada is pleased to announce an exciting new off-road race team for 2010.

Canadian off-road icons Marty Halmazna from Alberta and Guy Giroux from Quebec will compete at select events in 2010 including the Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) rounds and various regional events across Canada. Halmazna also has his sights set on some of the worlds most extreme races including a return to the notorious Erzberg Hare Scramble in Austria.

“It has been an exciting and satisfying process to put this race effort together” explains Husqvarna Canada’s Josh Barrett. He indicated that he has been working closely with Feeding Performance Inc.’s Race Team Director, Marc Coffin to select the best combination of racers for their program. “We really wanted a solid combination of proven racers” indicated Coffin.

“Halmazna and Giroux were easy choices when it came to picking seasoned racers. They both have had amazing careers and are still keen on continuing to add to their trophy collections and causing grief for their competition.”

In addition to numerous regional titles and an ISDE medal, Halmazna has accumulated four Canadian National Cross Country Championships and has earned the respect of fans and fellow racers in Canada and around the world with his outstanding performances in international events including finishing the nearly impossible Erzberg Hare Scramble on his first two attempts and solid results at Last Man Standing in Texas and Hell’s Gate in Italy”.

“Giroux is one Canada’s most versatile and well known off-road racers and has been a force to be reckoned with for many years” said Coffin. Guy has an impressive list of accomplishments including 17 Quebec Off-Road Championships, 2nd in the E2 Class and 4th overall in the 2009 CEC series and 3rd at the Endurocross race that was held during this year’s Montreal Supercross. He also has a ridiculous laundry list of results including an ISDE Gold Medal, 3 top 10 overalls in the Canadian Motocross Nationals, over a dozen main event appearances at the Montreal Supercross and is one of only a handful of Canadians to finish the legendary Paris to Dakar Rally. “I have known Guy for many years” adds Barrett. “We have worked together in the past and he has also raced for me on other brands. He is a great fit for what we are trying to accomplish and I am very pleased to have him on board.”

The team will operate under the direction of Feeding Performance Inc. and in addition to having direct factory support from Husqvarna; the team will have some serious assistance as a result of securing backing from Ty Davis and his Zip-Ty Racing program. “I called Cory Graffunder, who has earned a Factory ride with Zip-Ty Racing Husqvarna in the USA, to get the scoop on some Canadian riders that I was considering for our program” says Coffin. “That led to discussions with Ty Davis about what I was trying to accomplish in Canada. Ty was very receptive and has agreed to not only provide us with technical and parts support, but has also opened the door for our riders to train with his crew in California. With the success that Ty has had as a racer and in preparing Husqvarna’s for battle, I could not have dreamed of a better fit. My whole goal is to provide better support for Canadian racers and to raise the bar in our sport. I think this is a huge step forward. The off-road racing scene in Canada is really gaining momentum. It is an exciting time and I am looking forward to how things will develop in the coming years.”

In an addition to racing for the new FP Husqvarna / Zip-Ty Racing Canada team and working with Coffin to run its race program, Guy Giroux is joining Husqvarna Canada as an employee. Guy will be providing technical support to dealers across the country and will also have responsibility for Husqvarna Canada’s race program for dealer supported riders.

Following its launch at the Toronto motorcycle show, FP Husqvarna / Zip-Ty Racing Canada will be promoting its new team at the upcoming shows in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal. Look for announcements about additional riders to this new team in the coming weeks.

Turn 2 Sportbike School - busy in 2010

Turn 2 Sportbike School has been busy in the off-season, developing innovative course offerings to add to their already impressive program line-up. New for 2010 is the expansion of their Advanced Riding Course (ARC) programs, with the introduction of ARC 3 and Racer Preparation Course (RPC). Turn 2's Controlled Riding Group (CRG) program has also undergone some changes:

ARC 3 is tailored to experienced track riders, and focuses on both physical and mental dimensions of the sport. The course is based heavily on advanced racing techniques. RPC is the first program of its kind in Canada. Designed for aspiring new racers, it is instructed only by top professional racers.

With its open course curriculum and focus on track time - not class time - the CRG program provides a forum for riders to practice skills learned in the parallel ARC program.

Turn 2 introduces its Moto Club Membership, a premier program with a multitude of rewards and discounts. At the Turn 2 Moto Club GP Labour Day weekend race season finale, one lucky Turn 2 Moto Club member will win the Grand Prize of a 2010 Kawasaki Ninja 250R with a Nexo Sports Full Road Race Gear Package. Key membership benefits of Turn 2 Moto Club include:

- Free use of Nexo Sports Road Race Gear
- Free timing at all Turn 2 events with the new Zoomius RFID Timing System
- Discounted motorcycle rental, ARC and CRG course fees
- Automatic eligibility in the season-long Turn 2 Super Lap TT Series and the Turn 2 Moto Club GP on Labour Day weekend, both sponsored by Kahuna Powersports.

The Turn 2 Moto Club Super Lap TT Series consists of 22 events taking place at Calabogie Motorsports Park for the 2010 season. To be eligible for the Grand Prize Draw, riders do not necessarily have to win races. Points for ballots are issued for meeting participation-based criteria, such as: enrollment in courses and CRG days, most consistent rider and most improved rider. Note: Only Turn 2 Moto Club Members are eligible for the Grand Prize Draw.

Turn 2 Sportbike School is proud to announce their new soon to be launched, Zoomius-powered e-commerce website. Members have the ability to create their own rider profiles and check their times online. Visit Turn 2 at www.turn2.ca to view the 2010 schedule, register for courses, CRG days, and learn about membership benefits, special events and promotions.

Turn 2's 2010 schedule is as follows:

May 14 - 16
June 4 - 7 and 19 - 21
July 1 - 2 and 12 - 13
July 29 - August 1
August 13 - 16
September 3 - 5

"Turn 2 Sportbike School is in growth mode. With the introduction of our new courses, Turn 2 Moto Club Membership, special events, and the backing of our sponsor - Kahuna Powersports - we're geared up for an exciting 2010 season," says George Budacki, owner of Turn 2 Sportbike School.

Honda Canada VFR 1200 pricing

An Internet source is reporting the new Honda VFR 1200 has a Canadian MSRP and it's $18,299. The information isn't on Honda Canada's website yet - it just says TBD (To Be Determined) at the moment.

That's a bit less than many were expecting and less than Honda's mighty ST1300 sport touring touring machine, which lists at $20,599.

Time will tell if this number is accurate; we haven't gotten word from Honda Canada yet.

I ride a Honda VFR800 so I'm particularly interested in this new model.

Custom "Support Our Troops" themed motorcycle to be at Toronto Motorcycle Show

Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada and the Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services (CFPFSS), through its CANEX retail operations, have combined efforts, and as a result, a unique “Support Our Troops”-themed Harley-Davidson® Road King® motorcycle was created.

This iconic and unique custom-painted motorcycle embodies the passion, altruism, and pride of three organisations that have dedicated their efforts towards supporting the CFPFSS-administered Military Families Fund in its mission to assist Canadian Forces members and their families with special needs that they may have due to conditions of service.

Custom-painted by Extreme Measures and adorned with various important Support Our Troops symbols, the “Harley for Heroes”-themed Harley-Davidson® Road King® motorcycle will be on display at the MMIC Toronto Motorcycle Show from December 11 to 13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Sponsored by Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada, the evening of Saturday, December 12 will officially be presented as the Support Our Troops Night. Admission will be free after 5 p.m. for all military personnel members with proper credentials. Visitors will be able to purchase tickets for the “Harley for Heroes” raffle at a price of $25 a ticket for a chance to win the “Support Our Troops”-themed Harley-Davidson® Road King® motorcycle, which will be on display. On top of that, there is the chance to win a $500 Harley-Davidson® gift card, redeemable at participating authorized Canadian Harley-Davidson® Retail Stores. Starting December 14, the purchase of raffle tickets will also be possible at CANEX outlets in Ontario and at select Harley-Davidson® Retail Stores.

Made available through Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada, this unique and stunning motorcycle is a one-of-a-kind rolling icon in support of our troops. A cream, red, and black design, highlighted throughout by subtle maple leaves, serves as a backdrop for various important Support Our Troops symbols, such as the crest of the Canadian Forces on the front fender and a life-like red poppy image and the words “Lest we forget” on the rear. The saddlebags pay tribute to the Highway of Heroes and feature the Canadian Support Our Troops yellow ribbon image.

The bike was first unveiled at the Canadian National H.O.G.® Rally in Calgary on August 14. “I was extremely proud to have the opportunity to show a little corporate citizenship and represent the generosity and the altruism of our Harley Owners Group® members throughout the country by supporting such an important cause,” commented Don James, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada.

In addition to the donation of this unique commemorative motorcycle to the Military Families Fund, Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada further supports the troops by offering a $500 Canadian Parts & Accessories/GM credit to any regular or reserve Canadian Forces members with the purchase of a new, previously untitled motorcycle. Deeley is also giving those members of the armed forces who ride an opportunity to ride longer under warranty when they return home. The extended warranty will cover the number of days they were deployed to account for the balance of the remaining warranty period.

“CANEX has a long and proud association with Deeley Harley Davidson® Canada, but the donation of this bike marks a new milestone accomplishment in support of our troops. This beautiful motorcycle will help do much good within the military community through the Military Families Fund,” said Gerry Mahon, President of CANEX.

Zero Motorcycles to Field its First Street Racing Team in 2010

It looks like Zero electric motorcycles is set to go racing. Zero Motorcycles is going to be competing in the 2010 TTXGP Electric Motorcycle championships

Press Release:

Zero Motorcycles announced today (December 1st/09) the creation of its first street racing team and its plans to enter the upcoming 2010 TTXGP electric motorcycle series. Zero has indicated that its race-ready motorcycle will be using the same Z-Force powertrain technology that is currently used in its production electric motorcycles. Few additional details have been released on the development of Zero’s race bike, but it has been hinted that many of the design cues will come from the production Zero S street motorcycle.

TTXGP is the world’s first zero carbon and zero emissions motorcycle race series. The inaugural TTXGP race took place on the historic Isle of Man TT course in June 2009 and will return again in June 2010 with the addition of a new race class. The first TTXGP race in the 2010 season will be the TTXGP North America Championships at Infineon in Sonoma, California on May 14 - 16.

“Electric motorcycles are powerful, exciting and available now. There is no race that highlights electric motorcycle technology more than the TTXGP and we are excited to support their efforts with our own racing team,” said Gene Banman, CEO of Zero Motorcycles. “We have identified a series of strategic partners for this program and will be making announcements shortly about their involvement.”

Zero Motorcycles is not a stranger to competitive racing. Recently, Zero Motorcycles took first place in a sanctioned motocross race (finishing third overall in points for the series), in France hosted by the French Federation of Motorcycles. The Zero MX beat out more than 200 450cc gas motorcycles in fierce competition.
Zero’s Z-Force technology includes its patent pending Z-Force power pack which is capable of delivering a tremendous amount of energy from a highly compact and lightweight system. It also includes a newly announced Z-Force Air Induction system that allows Zero to fully leverage their power pack’s capabilities by dispersing excess motor heat. This development also paves the way for Zero to increase performance in upcoming models.

“We’ve spent four years developing the Z-Force electric power train technology for high performance dirt and street riding. We’re excited to take it to the track and compete. We expect to gain valuable information through the competition of our motorcycles and plan to apply that knowledge to the development of future products,” added Neal Saiki, Zero Motorcycles Founder and CTO.

Zero Motorcycles is the next step in motorcycle evolution and represents the ultimate electric motorcycle technology. Unencumbered by conventional thinking about how they design, manufacture and sell high performance electric motorcycles, they are on a mission to turn heads and revolutionize their industry by combining the best aspects of a traditional motorcycle with today’s most advanced technology. The result is an electric motorcycle line that’s insanely fast and environmentally friendly.

Dakar 2010 - 30 Days and counting!

We got an email from BC resident - Don Hatton's, Team Destination Dakar with some updates that will have all the Dakar fans out their on the edge of their seat.

Press Release:

The bike is built and loaded on the ship in France heading for Argentina. Entrance fee is paid. The medical shots are all done. Moose’s – a motorcycle endurance racer’s version of a tire inner tube - are located and being shipped via a courier company to a motorcycle dealer in South America that he has only met once.

A thousand little details are being looked after by various people around the globe all cumulating in Canadian Don Hatton starting in the 2010 Dakar Race on January 1, 2010 in Buenos Aires Argentina. The race lasts 17 days and covers nearly 10,000 kilometers in Argentina and Chile.

“I’m nervous about the race but really excited about being back in the Dakar” Don said in a recent interview. This will be Don’s third attempt at the fabled endurance race.

His first attempt was preempted by the cancellation of the race in 2008 when it was still held in North Africa by the organizing body – ASO – due to terrorist threats against the race participants. In the 2009 Dakar race held in Argentina Don crashed on day five severely injuring himself.

Don is fully recovered from his injuries and recently finished fourth in the 2009 NPO Shamrock Rally de Maroc (Rally of Morocco)

Don’s new KTM 690 Rally bike was recently on display at his dealership, Duncan Motorsports, in Duncan BC where team mechanic Bernie Wright prepared the bike prior to shipping it to France. It will be loaded along with his replacement parts and personal racing equipment onto a ship by the ASO so that all the competitors bikes clear Argentina customs at one time. This will greatly simplify some of the logistical challenges faced by Don and his team last year.

Don is inviting his friends, fans and media to a gala send off party to be held December 23, 2009 at Duncan Motorsports in Duncan BC. Time to be advised.
