Fabrizio second place on the grid for first races of 2010 SuperBike season

Phillip Island (Australia), Saturday 27th February : the first Superpole of the 2010 World Superbike season took place this afternoon at a breezy Phillip Island, and Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio was undoubtedly one of the protagonists, putting in a strong and consistent performance to snatch second place on tomorrow’s grid, and missing out on pole by just a fraction of a second. Team-mate Noriyuki Haga had a more difficult time, qualifying in tenth place for the opening races of the year. Of the first ten bikes on tomorrow’s grid, five are Ducati 1198s, yet another a demonstration of the bike’s competitiveness.

In this morning’s qualifying, and on a much cooler track compared to yesterday, the three fastest riders from yesterday, Checa, Fabrizio and Haslam did not manage to improve on their best times but they nevertheless held on the top three spots on the timesheet, qualifying first to third for the afternoon’s Superpole. Noriyuki, maintaining a similar pace to yesterday, preferred to work with a used tyre than change to a fresh one in the final minutes to record a fast lap, meaning that he qualified for Superpole in fourteenth place. It is interesting to note that the fastest seventeen riders lapped within seven tenths of a second of each other, a sure sign that this year’s championship will be extremely hard fought.

As expected, Superpole was a close battle between the top eight. In the first of the three phases, 14 minutes in length, Nori immediately recorded a time fast enough for him to be able to return to the garage, safe in the knowledge that he had done enough. Michel meanwhile needed a tyre change before his fastest lap propelled him up the timesheets to third place, to easily proceed to phase two along with his team-mate.

In the second mini-Superpole both factory riders went out on qualifiers, Michel making a fast lap and Nori changing tyre mid-session. What seemed to be a clean lap for Haga unfortunately failed to equate to a fast enough lap, due to an apparent lack of rear grip which meant that Haga’s Superpole finished here, with the tenth fastest time of the afternoon, although only two tenths off Michel’s pace in the same session.

Michel, who still had a qualifier left to use in the final phase, pushed to the limit and it seemed that the pole position was within his grasp, but it all came down to a fraction of a second, with Michel ultimately closing in second place, just 0.016 of a second from Haslam on the Suzuki. Lining up in the first eight on tomorrow’s grid are also the Ducati 1198s of Checa (Althea Racing) in fourth and Smrz (Team Pata B&G Racing) in sixth.

Three-time world champion Troy Bayliss is once again special guest at the Phillip Island circuit this weekend  and it was he who presented former team-mate Michel Fabrizio with his Superpole trophy today. Troy will continue to work as a Ducati “ambassador” in 2010.

Michel Fabrizio
“Today’s Superpole was very difficult but I am very happy with the final result. I lost out on the pole by just a fraction of a second which is a shame, but it’s not the first time that that has happened and the important thing is that I’m on the front row tomorrow. I was happy with my flying lap, a clean lap, with no-one in front of me. Tomorrow will be an equally difficult challenge, and various riders, me, Haslam, Checa, Biaggi and Nori will surely be in contention. We know we have a good race pace and I’m feeling confident for the races.”

Noriyuki Haga
“In the second phase of the Superpole I went out on a race tyre but even though it felt like a clean lap, the time was not quick enough and unfortunately that put me out of the fight, and I finished tenth. Tomorrow I will of course need to make a fantastic start but I am confident that I am able to do that. I apologise to Ducati for the fact that I’m on the third row but I will, as ever, do my best in the races. Last year I started from 13th and won the race so I know it is possible to achieve a great result regardless of grid position.”

TIMES (Superpole): 1. Haslam (Suzuki) 1’31.2;  2. Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) 1’31.2; 3. Crutchlow (Yamaha) 1’31.6; 4. Checa (Ducati) 1’31.6; 5. Guintoli (Suzuki) 1’31.6; 6. Smrz (Ducati) 1’31.7; 7. Rea (Honda) 1’21.9; 8. Toseland (Yamaha) 1’32.0; 9. Lanzi (Ducati) 1’32.3; 10. Haga (Ducati Xerox) 1’32.7

Top 5 finishes for Fabrizio and Haga at Phillip Island first qualifying

Phillip Island (Australia), Friday 26th February : The World Superbike Championship officially got underway at Phillip Island today and, for the Ducati Xerox team and riders Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio, results of the first qualifying session were very positive, Fabrizio propelling himself to second place on the timesheets and Haga concluding in fifth.

After the very encouraging results of the recent tests held here last weekend, Michel closing fastest and Noriyuki in sixth, the team returned to work today in a motivated and enthusiastic frame of mind.

In the early afternoon the Superbike riders took to the tracks for the first free practice session. Faced with hotter track temperatures (circa 45°C) compared to those of last week’s test, both Noriyuki and Michel continued to work on the set-up of their Ducati 1198 machines. Both riders concentrated on tyre durability, trying to find the best set-up on used tyres. Michel was victim of a crash mid-session caused by an unexpected lack of grip at the front on entry into a corner, the asphalt was extremely slippery due to the heat. Having lost valuable time, the Italian rider exited on his second bike but was unfortunately unable to record a very fast lap, closing the session in 11th.

Noriyuki made his fastest lap near the start of the session, closing in seventh place, but confident.

Later on, in the first qualifying session, the two factory riders significantly improved on their times , lapping consistently fast and towards the end of the session, on soft compounds, they both registered times that left them both happy and in the top five. Noteworthy performances also came from Carlos Checa and Shane “Shakey” Byrne (Althea Racing), they too riding the 1198, who finished the session in first and fourth placed respectively.

Michel Fabrizio 1m32.1s
“We tried different tyre solutions this morning and various setting solutions in agreement with my engineer. I had a fall, losing the front, but without causing myself, or my bike, too much damage fortunately. Then in the qualifying session we found a good direction with the tyre solution that may well be the one to choose for the race; the results were quite encouraging. During my fast lap I lost a couple of tenths through the last corner but I’m happy; we’ve worked well and I’m satisfied with the results. We have a good race pace but a lot will depend on Sunday’s weather.”

Noriyuki Haga 1m32.7s
“We’ve tested the different rear tyres that Pirelli make available to us this weekend but we are still undecided as to which will have the best durability in these hot conditions. Tomorrow we’ll try a different solution for the setting but overall I’m happy. The lap times have been consistent but today was very hot and although I felt I could have pushed a little more, I didn’t want to risk it, also because I saw that several riders crashed."

TIMES:  1. Checa (Ducati) 1.32.1; 2. Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) 1’32.1, 3. Haslam (Suzuki) 1’32.3; 4. Byrne (Ducati) 1’32.6; 5. Haga (Ducati Xerox) 1’32.7; 6. Biaggi (Aprilia)  1’32.8; 7. Rea (Honda) 1’32.8; 8. Guintoli (Suzuki) 1’32.9

Ducati ready for 2010 racing season

Ducati North America is excited for the beginning of the 2010 US racing season, with a record eight privateer Ducati teams entering the Daytona Superbike and Daytona 200 races.

As one of the most storied and famous names in motorcycle racing, Ducati lives and breathes the sport. This is something reflected in the DNA of its road-going performance models. Defined by the motto “Engineered by the stopwatch, designed by the racetrack,” Ducati’s Superbike range represents the ideal platform from which to build a professional racing contender.

This year, no fewer than eight privateer teams have done exactly that- with three representing Ducati in the flagship Superbike class aboard the 1198R, and another six entered in the grueling Daytona 200 aboard the middleweight 848. Ducatisti worldwide will have all eyes on the Bolognese machines, cheering them on from start to finish for their efforts in dominating the most anticipated race of the year.

Ducati is proud to announce the return of Larry Pegram -winner of three AMA Superbike Races in 2009- who is aboard his 1198R Superbike for its second full season of AMA competition. He will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the Superbike class. On the grid with Pegram in Daytona will be Floridian Barrett Long of Longetivity Racing, and Shawn Higbee aboard a Moto Forza- backed bike.

The Ducati 848 will make its Daytona 200 debut en masse, with eight bikes entered into the Sportbike class. This represents the strongest Ducati field in years, and there will no doubt be a race to the finish for these middleweight champions.

Running the full 2010 season will be Motocorsa-backed Latus Motors rider Steve Rapp- a rider with previous Ducati knowledge-  and the two Crozier Roberson Motorsports bikes of Mark Crozier and Bobby Fong. They will be sharing the Daytona grid with Jake Holden, Barrett Long and Calvin Martinez. Daytona is seen in Europe as one of the world’s most exotic and appealing races, the mystique of which has drawn Andrea Padovani and Dario Marchetti of Italy over to compete.

For those who would like to see the brand new 848 Dark and 1198R road bikes; the 2010 Ducati lineup will be on display at Ducati Motorcycles of Daytona throughout the week. Many of these models will be making their US debuts. The famous Ducati Caffe will be there, and all are welcome to come by for an espresso and to enjoy the Ducati lifestyle displays.

2010 Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere unveiled

Yamaha is gunning to take some market share from the segment leading BMW 1200GS and 1200GSA. It's meant to appeal to the adventure riding/touring segment and be capable of taking its rider off the beaten track if desired. The SUV of the motorcycle world - capable but not necessarily used to its full potential in the off-road department. So, the bike has to be really comfortable on-road too.

It looks like Yamaha has equipped the Super Tenere to do the job - spoked rims suggest off-road ability, available crash bars, and low maintenance shaft drive give this bike some of the characteristics it'll need to steal away potential BMW riders.

I'm not too sure about that front fender though. That's a little vulnerable looking for extended off-road sessions. Time will tell I suppose.

Forward momentum comes by way of a 1,199cc inline twin putting out 110PS at 7250rpm m of torque at 6,000rpm. It also packs some sophisticated technology such as a 3-stage traction control module and intelligent ABS braking system.

The Super Tenere is no lightweight at 261 kg wet, but that puts it in the ballpark with the equally sized BMW. The Super Tenere is about 5kg heavier - but is said to carry the weight low for a very balanced and stable feel.

No word on pricing yet, or whether we'll get this bike in Canada. We'll let you know as soon as we hear.

For full details on the Super Tenere along with a large gallery of pictures - be sure to check out the Yamaha Motors Europe website HERE.

Atlantic Motoplex brings Triumph and Suzuki into the fold

New Brunswick based Atlantic Motoplex has some big news. In addition to the Yamaha, BMW, and Ducati's they've been selling - they've just added two new makes to the list... Suzuki and Triumph.

That's a lot of brands under one roof, making for a wide range choices when it comes to buying a new or used motorcycle. You can try out a lot of bikes in one convenient location.

They've also recently launched a new accessories catalog that can be downloaded directly from their site. Get your copy HERE (it's a PDF).

They buy big and pass the savings on to you.

In a recent discussion with a member of the sales team at Atlantic Motoplex they indicated they're one of the leaders in motorcycle tire sales in the region - they offer 30-40% off suggested MSRPs as standard. A tire rep confirmed independently that if you're in the market for a new set of rubbers it'd be a good idea to check out the prices at Atlantic Motoplex.

Port Dover motorcycle museum proposed

Already a very popular motorcycle enthusiast destination every Friday the 13th, residents of Port Dover are trying to launch a motorcycle museum. The hope is that it would help further solidify the area's reputation as a motorcycle destination and, of course, create more jobs. The proposed location would be a former fish plant which occupies a large brick complex on a prime piece of waterfront real estate on Lynn River.

Students from the University Guelph are on the job of preparing some conceptual plans for a "Riverfront Park" which will be presented to Norfolk council. The plans have already been seen by Norfolk's tourism and economic development department and the PD13 (the Friday the 13th organizing committee).

It's expected that the development would need both public and private sector support to become a reality. The area could house not only a motorcycle museum; it'll be a year round recreation facility with the possibility of an outdoor skating oval, a splash pad, benches, shade trees, a picnic pavilion and food and beverage booth.

For more information about the possible museum check out the news article in the Simcoe Reformer.

Haga and Fabrizio set strong pace - Day 1 test Phillip Island

Phillip Island (Australia), Sunday 21st February: in very warm conditions (air temperature 26°, track 34°), the Ducati Xerox riders Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio made the most of the track time during this, the first of two days of testing before the championship opens here next weekend.

In the first of the day’s sessions both riders were immediately comfortable, setting some very fast lap times right from the start. The team worked with Noriyuki and Michel to find a strong race pace and understand which tyres will work best in the Australian heat. Having completed more than 40 laps each in the morning, Noriyuki and Michel closed that particular session with the second and third fastest laps respectively, followed by the three private Ducatis of Checa, Lanzi and Byrne.

The Superbike riders returned to the track at 3.30, the asphalt having reached 41°. Despite the heat, both riders continued to make fast laps and towards the end of the session Michel was able to improve on his best time set this morning to close day one with the second fastest time overall. Nori spend the second part of the session testing Pirelli’s different solutions, and finished today in fourth place, just two tenths of a second behind his team-mate.

Noriyuki Haga
“It’s been a positive day. We tried various things, making changes to the rear suspension setting and testing the different tyres on offer. The problem is being able to identify a direction during these test days that will also work next Sunday, it’s difficult to predict how the conditions will be in a week’s time. Anyway we’ve worked hard today and made some good progress.”

Michel Fabrizio
“It hasn’t gone badly today. We’ve worked mainly on tyres, trying to find a good race pace. We’re not quite there yet but we’ve made a good start and know what there is to do tomorrow. It’s very hot but after our recent cold and wet tests in Portimao and Valencia we can’t complain!”

TIMES – DAY 1 – Checa (Ducati) 1m31.9s; Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) 1m32.3s; Haslam (Suzuki) 1m32.4s; Haga (Ducati Xerox) 1m32.5s; Rea Lanzi (Ducati) 1m32.5s; Byrne (Ducati) 1m32.6s; Neukirchner (Honda) 1m32.7s; Biaggi (Aprilia) 1m32.8s

HDT Diesel motorcycle - Fall 2010 release

We've told you about the Hayes Diversified Technologies diesel motorcycle before but something interesting is afoot!

HDT have been making diesel motorcycles for the military for several years now and haven't had the capacity to produce bikes for the US Marines and civilian use. It looks like times have changed and they have a sign up to be placed on a waiting list for a Fall 2010 release. The bike is called the AT-1 and it features a single cylinder 670cc diesel engine.

The AT-1 starts with a KLR 650 as a mule bike with a very efficient diesel engine into it. How efficient? How does 105 miles per gallon sound? It'll also reach speeds of up to 95 miles per hour.

It won't be really cheap ($16,900 USD + tax & shipping) but it could be just the ticket if you're into adventure touring and want something that's going to be very reliable and will go as far as 1,030 km's between fill ups.

Some other interesting specs:

Power 36 PS @ 5700 RPM:
Torque 58 Nm (43 ft-lbs) @ 3300 RPM
Transmission: 5‐speed, constant mesh
Curb weight: 203 kg (447 lbs)
Colors: Black/Silver or Silver/Black

For more details check out HDT's website HERE.

Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV Show - A few pictures

We went to the big Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV show this past weekend (Feb 12-14) and although there seemed to be a few exhibitors that didn't come around this year; I'd say the show was still a success.

Many of the major manufacturers were there and they had their 2010's on hand. We took lots of pictures and here's just a small sample of them for you. We'll be updating the site soon with a more thorough listing of pictures.

Compare if you'd like the sound of a new VFR1200 with an aftermarket exhaust vs. an old school gear driven cam VFR. Some say that the old VFR's are amoung "the" best sounding motorcycles of all time.

The VFR1200 shown here has an aftermarket leo vince pipe.

More Chinese scooters on their way to Canada

BC based Motorsports Craze is bringing a few models of Baotian scooters to the Canadian market. The Baotian Motorcycle Industrial Company is a large Chinese manufacturer that's been operating 1994. They make motorcycles, scooters, ATV's, motors, and other products.

Motorsports Craze will be bringing in three different Baotian scooters; the air-cooled 50cc Quadro and Lotus, and a liquid cooled-150cc Euro. Prices range from $1299 for the Quadro, $1499 for the Lotus - $1499 and $2399 for the Euro.

Full press release follows:

Motorsport Craze is pleased to announce the arrival of Baotian Scooters in Canada. Baotian Motorcycle Industrial Co., produces 1000 scooters per day; is distributed in 33 different countries; and consistently tops the 50cc scooter sales chart in the U.K. The Baotian factory produces their own engines, and drive-trains allowing them to maintain much higher standards for quality control. They also hold the copyright to the 4 VALVE- 50cc GY6 motor, which is soon to be released this year. We strongly feel that a 4-Valve, 4-Stroke motor is the way of the future, as it meets the stringent California CARB, and EPA emissions standards, without the loss of power, that most 4-stroke 50cc engines are known for.

The Quadro (BT49QT-9S3) The ultimate all rounder, this scooter is lightweight, maneuverable and nippy around town. Whilst economical, it has sports-styled alloy wheels, aluminum silencer and pedal plates.

Optional equipment includes remote starting and factory-fitted alarm. A color coordinated top box is also available for optional fitting.

The Lotus (BT49QT-18E1) The Lotus continues Baotian's move away from generic design of Chinese manufactured scooters. Whilst still utilizing the BT49QT-18 frame and engine, this design encompasses all the key features of recent development including twin halogen headlamps, 2 stroke style "scorpion" exhaust, 12-inch alloy wheels and directional tires. The indicators, both front and rear, are integrated into the bodywork.

This model also benefits from a tachometer. As with all Baotian Canada models, optional accessories are; a standard factory fitted alarm/immobilizer; a color coordinated top box which fits directly to the rear carrier/grab handle. And, as with all models, it is powered by our reliable, efficient, 4 stroke, air-cooled engine.

The Euro (BT151T-2B4) The Euro is appropriately named for it’s European styling and sleek urban lines. This 16” “Big Wheeled” full size commuter is packed with power with an impressive liquid cooled 150cc motor while Front and Rear disc brakes complete the driving experience. It’s loaded with modern design features such as LED lights, and Fold-away passenger foot pedals.

Based on Baotian’s world wide reputation as a quality manufacturer of excellence, and success in the UK we feel that this is the best product to bring into Canada. Baotian China will also debut their scooters in the USA for the first time at the Dealer Expo in Indianapolis this year. Booth # 4105.

The Quadro, Lotus, and Euro will each be backed with a comprehensive 2 year limited warranty. More details will be available soon at

BMW Motorrad Canada and Rush HD jump into Canadian Superbike for 2010

BMW Motorrad Canada, confirming that it will be fielding a two rider factory superbike team in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in 2010, is also pleased to announce a collaboration with Rush HD as the title sponsor of the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team.

Rush HD is Canada’s only high-octane, no fear, no limits extreme sports adventure HD channel. Rush HD is owned and operated by High Fidelity HDTV Inc., Canada’s leading HD broadcaster and production enterprise whose four all-HD channels provide Canadians with best-in-class non-fiction programming on the themes of Nature, Culture and Adventure.

In conjunction with the superbike sponsorship, the Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team will be followed all season long by a documentary film crew capturing the creation and activities of a superbike team in action, for the production and broadcast of a six part one hour mini series to be shown on Rush HD this fall. John Panikkar, Rush HD’s chief executive, said “Rush HD is delighted to be title sponsor of this year’s Rush HD/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team. The action-adventure programming we broadcast on Rush HD is a natural fit with the action and excitement of a superbike racing series. ”

Chris Duff, Manager, Motorrad Marketing, stated, “We are thrilled to have Rush HD onboard as we prepare and race the most exciting new entry in the 2010 Canadian Superbike season”.

Both riders from BMW’s 2009 team, Francis Martin and Michael Ferreira, will once again be the riders in the hot seat, tasked with bringing a superbike victory to BMW Motorrad Canada in 2010.

Francis Martin is no stranger to racing in the Superbike Class having won two Canadian Superbike Championships in 1999 and 2005 respectively along with another litre bike title in 2002, the Pro Open Sportbike Championship. “I'm very exited about the next season and have been waiting for this moment for a long time” says Francis Martin. “Now we have the bike to win and the tuner with whom I won my last championship”.

Michael Ferreira will be making his Superbike Class debut in 2010 and continues his streak as the longest serving rider on the team after racing the BMW boxer twins in Canadian Thunder and Pro Sportbike classes since 2007. Ferreira, the winner of the 2006 RACE Pro 600 Sportbike Championship, will not have any trouble transferring his skills back onto an in-line four race bike from the twins he recently has competed on.

When asked about his thoughts of racing in the Superbike Class, Ferreira had this to say, "From the day I started racing, my dream was always to race in the premier class against the best riders in the country. Three years ago I was blessed with an opportunity to race for BMW and it’s been an experience of a lifetime with what now will be the highlight of my racing career. I couldn't be happier than to share this experience with the brand that has had so much faith in me."

Joining the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this season is famed Canadian superbike tuner Patrice Goyette of Mobile PG. Patrice recently was the main crew chief behind Clint McBain of Acceleration Racing the past two years and has a previous relationship with Francis Martin from when they won the 2005 Canadian Superbike Championship.

“Staying with our same two riders this year was always the plan when we talked about jumping into the Superbike Class” said Chris Duff, Manager Motorrad Marketing. “Now that we have also been able to add a huge asset in Patrice, this should show race fans our commitment to winning races in 2010.”

Also partnering with the Rush HD / BMW Motorrad Superbike Team this year will be three new sponsors: Joe Rocket, Hotbodies Bodywork and Hindle Exhausts. Joe Rocket returns to BMW after a three year hiatus and Bruce Parker, President of Joe Rocket Canada enthused: “ we are excited about renewing our relationship with BMW Motorrad Canada and looking forward to BMW adding to our history of Rocket Racing success.”

With the launch of the new S1000RR, BMW Motorrad now has the arsenal needed to fight for superbike championships worldwide and Canada is no exception.

The 2010 Canadian Superbike Championship begins with Round 1 from the ICAR facility at Mirabel Quebec May 28-30 and then continues for Rounds 2 & 3 at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park June 24-27. Rounds 4 & 5 will be the annual mid-summer Mosport Doubleheader Weekend July 8-11 and the final two rounds, Rounds 6 & 7 will take place August 5-8 from Shubenacadie Nova Scotia. Follow all rounds of the Canadian Superbike Championship on TSN HD in 2010.

BMW motorcycle sales up in January

We've gotten some global numbers from the BMW Group concerning BMW Motorrad. Numbers are pretty good for the first month of the new decade - January saw global sales for BMW Motorrad at 3,814 units - that's up 2.2% over last year.

A sneak peak at the Fischer MRX 650

National Motorsports is going to be bringing the American made Fischer MRX 650 to Canada in time for the summer 2010 season.

Just in case you'd like to see what it can do right now, Fischer has posted a little clip of the bike in action. It's not really a terribly new video but we haven't seen, or heard, this bike yet on the streets in Canada so this will give you an idea of what to expect!

Certainly sounds great!

A bit of background on the Fischer MRX 650 from National Motorsports:

"The MRX is a unique and exotically styled sportbike powered by a 650cc V-Twin Hyosung engine. Its angular styling is from the fertile pen of European designer Glynn Kerr. The GP-inspired chassis is a one piece diecast aluminum frame made in the USA; and was developed by Gemini Technology Systems of Wisconsin. Standard equipment on these units are Öhlins suspension, Brembo master cylinder, Hella lights, Woodcraft licensed clip-ons, EK gold 525 o-ring chain, LED taillight, Koso fully programmable instrument cluster, Bridgestone tires, braided brake lines, and a full stainless exhaust."

MultiStrada 1200 update - more details on the extended service interval

With the arrival of the new Multistrada 1200, Ducati will reach a significant milestone in the company's engineering history by extending the periods between major services on the new model to an owner-friendly 24,000km (15,000 miles).

Doubling the mileage between valve clearance inspection has been made possible with the introduction of a new valve seat material combined with improved combustion efficiency and temperature management designed into the Multistrada's new Testastretta 11° engine.

So called because of its minimised 11° of ‘valve overlap' - the interval of crankshaft rotation during which both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time - the new Desmodromic power plant not only transforms the world championship-winning 1198 configuration into a super-smooth 150hp motor for sport touring, but also improves fuel efficiency, emissions and cost of scheduled maintenance.

First revealed at the Milan International Motorcycle Show in November 2009, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 combines innovative design and unprecedented technology to unleash a four-bikes-in-one concept. Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro riding modes now enable a customisable riding experience separated by just one click.

Arriving in Ducati showrooms from early 2010, the 189kg (417lb) Multistrada 1200 is offered with optional ABS, while the flagship Multistrada 1200 S presents ABS and Ducati Electronic Suspension by Öhlins as standard equipment. The 1200 S is available in ‘Sport edition' with specific components in carbon fibre or ‘Touring edition' with side luggage, heated grips and centre stand.

Ducati Multistrada 1200 - 15,000 mile major service intervals announced

Ducati North America is excited to announce a significant milestone in the company’s engineering history: 15,000 mile major service intervals on the 2010 Multistrada 1200.

The Multistrada 1200 is the product of Ducati’s most intensive development program ever. Entering the arena of adventure touring motorcycles, Ducati set its sights on the class benchmarks. With the goal setting a new class standard, Ducati developed revolutionary new features such as the Multistrada’s “4 bikes in 1” adjustability.

The Multistrada 1200’s aggressive development process also encompassed build quality and servicing. Ducati is now excited to announce the fruits of its labor: a 15,000 mile period between major services.

Doubling the mileage between valve clearance inspections has been made possible due to the introduction of a new valve seat material. This material enables the new “Testastretta 11°" powerplant to go the distance- both literally and figuratively. Incorporating improved combustion efficiency and a new temperature management system, the Testastretta 11° engine ushers in a new era of service and reliability. The engine lowers the cost of maintenance, improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions- all while retaining exhilarating performance capabilities.

The game-changing Multistrada 1200 will arrive in North American showrooms this coming April. For more information about this revolutionary new Ducati, please visit

"Endurance embraces the lifestyle that is off-road racing from the eye of the artist. Hundreds of beautiful photos explore every facet of off-road racing…. The book is really the first of it's kind and blurs the line between a full-blown moto-head book and art-house book." — Matt Ware, Racer X Magazine

"The same experiences we've poured out of our boots and tried in vain to relate to concerned family members come alive on the pages of Endurance, making it like no other moto-photo book I've seen." — Dan Paris, Direct Motocross

"…the best off-road lifestyle photography I've seen. Theresa Ortolani has captured the essence of an off-road racer's pain and glory in a great looking, great reading book." — Jesse Ziegler, Dirt Rider Magazine

"Award-winning photographer, Theresa Ortolani, spent three years covering the often bone-crushing danger and fierce brilliance of off-road motorcycle racing. With more than 150 largely full-page color gravures, Endurance offers an unparalleled glimpse into the sport and the careers of famed racers such as Nathan Kanney, Kailub Russell, David Knight and Anders Eriksson. Watch a VFR1200F being built - every 90 seconds

The Kumamoto plant in Japan features state-of-the-art efficiency and the latest production technologies. The plant is the main production facilities for Honda motorcycle operations around the world. On the 130 metre long production line for the Honda VFR1200F, a new bike comes off the line every 90 seconds.

I for one don't care how much bad press the VFR1200F has been getting. I'm really looking forward to seeing it in the flesh. Looking forward even more to taking one for a spin. I do own a VFR 800 though - maybe Honda won't allow it - if you're to believe the Internet.

BMW Motorrad Canada - sets January sales record

It looks like BMW Motorrad Canada is on a roll again. They did some impressive business in the month of January.

BMW Motorrad Canada retailed 54 motorcycles in the first month of 2010, a best ever January result and increase of 170 per cent over the same period in 2009. Contributing to this success of BMW Motorrad is the new S1000RR Superbike, as its popularity grows among a young demographic.

BMW Motorrad achieves and Husqvarna motorcycle sales strong - for 2009

Here's a big summary of 2009 from the folks at BMW Motorrad. It's a little long but it's definitely worth a read. It gives an excellent overview of the BMW marquee and compares their sales to their competitors. The BMW Group achieved a global sales volume of over 87,000 motorcycles for the 2009 financial year.

Press Release:

BMW Motorrad can look back on a successful year in 2009 in spite of a very difficult market environment marked by the global financial and economic crisis. Last year 87,306 (previous year: 101,685) BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers which is equivalent to a comparatively moderate drop of 14.1%. BMW Motorrad has thus not only reached the target it set itself, but also achieved the second-lowest decline in sales amongst the competition.

While the world market for motorcycles above 500 cubic centimetres was still approximately 1.5 million vehicles in 2007, it shrank to about 900,000 units in 2009. This corresponds to a market drop of around 40% in two years. In the crisis year of 2009 alone the world market declined by more than 30%.

Despite these downward tendencies in the motorcycle markets, BMW Motorrad was able to grow in the European markets Great Britain and Eastern Europe, in the Asian markets of Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, as well as in the Middle East and Brazil.

Due to its continued powerful product offensive, the white and blue brand performed outstandingly on other export markets, often expanding its market share considerably. In the seven important motorcycle markets of Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, the USA, Japan and Germany, BMW Motorrad increased its market share throughout.

This was achieved even though market sales dropped by 32% in the segment above 500 cubic centimetres. Compared to the competition, which lost between 20% and almost 50% of its sales, BMW Motorrad sales dropped by only 16%.

In Germany, which is still the biggest market for BMW Motorrad, 15,833 (previous year: 18,112) BMW motorcycles were registered, representing a drop of 12.6%. In spite of this environment BMW Motorrad was able to defend its market leadership in the once again shrinking overall market (-14.5%) as well as in the segment above 500 cc. The BMW share in the overall market was 17.7% in December (previous year: 17.3%). In the segment above 500 cc the market share was 19.0% (previous year: 18.1%).

Italy continues to be the second largest for BMW Motorrad. Here a total of 13,207 BMW motorcycles were registered (previous year: 15,342), a decline of 13.9% (market as a whole: minus 20.0 %). The market share of BMW Motorrad in the segment over 500 cc increased to14.3 % (previous year: 13.0 %).

In the USA, too - BMW Motorrad’s third largest market - the market as a whole decreased by 41.6 %. Here 9,168 (previous year: 11,831) BMW motorcycles were registered, a drop of 22.5 % as compared to the previous year. However, it was possible to increase the market share over 500 cc by 2.0% to 2.6%.

In 2009 once again, the most successful model overall was the large travel enduro BMW R 1200 GS (15,864 units) along with its sibling model, the R 1200 GS Adventure (8,803 units). Outstanding sales figures were also achieved by the F 800 GS (10,974 units) and the F 800 R (5,828 units), where the conquest rate was especially pleasing.

BMW Motorrad in 2010 - a look ahead.

The prospects for 2010 look promising: this is because BMW Motorrad was able to extend its market share across the board and take on market leadership in several instances, thereby creating an excellent basis for future growth.

With the new S 1000 RR, BMW Motorrad has a supersports volume model in its program for a full season for the first time, with some 2,300 orders already having been placed by the time of the market launch on December 6th 2009.

From February 6th 2010 BMW customers will benefit from the model revision of the new BMW 1200 GS / Adventure and BMW R 1200 RT which are to be launched with the new DOHC flat twin engines.

In addition to this, the BMW Motorrad model program is in excellent shape generally for 2010. In the worlds of experience Enduro, Tour, Urban, Sport and HP there are fascinating motorcycles to suit virtually every taste. The model range is supplemented by an extensive program of accessories and innovative BMW Motorrad rider equipment.

Husqvarna Motorcycles puts in a powerful sales performance.

Husqvarna Motorcycles, the second motorcycle brand of the BMW Group, achieved worldwide sales figures of 13,052 units (previous year: 13,511) - a decline of just 3%. And in the seven major motorcycle markets the drop in sales was only 2%.

Sales in Australia, Germany and France developed very positively, with the previous year’s figures being far exceeded in each case. Husqvarna Motorcycles even increased its performance in the heavily declining US market (- 41.6%).

Now that the new model TE 250 has been so well received by the market, a model offensive is planned for 2010: in spite of a difficult market environment, this provides hope of a positive sales development.
