2011 Royal Distributing Canadian Enduro Championship - Western Events

The winter is slowly fading away and another exciting year of racing is rapidly approaching.  World Enduro Canada is pleased to announce the details on our first four rounds taking place in BC and Alberta in July.

Rounds 1 & 2 - July 9th and 10th

This year we will begin the season at a brand new location - Sun Peaks Resort in Kamloops, BC.  Canadian Enduro Legend Guy Perret and his crew are putting together an exciting, spectator friendly event at this beautiful resort.

WEC's Sean Wiesner - "We are very fortunate to be working alongside long time friend Guy Perret organizing the 2011 British Columbia round of the Canadian Enduro Championship. Guy's wealth of experience in international competition will be a great benefit to the series and help continue the high standards set by the SODBC crew in 2009 and 2010."

Sun Peaks is looking forward to the event and welcoming the Enduro racing community to their resort. “Hosting the Canadian Enduro Championships expands the diversity of events and activities that take place around Sun Peaks Resort every summer,” says Christopher Nicolson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks. “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring in new visitors from surrounding markets – and heighten the awareness of Enduro to both potential participants and spectators.”

Plans are already in the works to switch the east & west rounds in 2012 and have Sun Peaks host the final rounds in September.  This will be a great time of the year to visit the mountains so start your 2012 holiday plans now to join us.

Rounds 3 & 4 - July 16th and 17 th

Following Kamloops the series will head to picturesque Blairmore, AB in the Crowsnest Pass.  Clint Riviere and his Full Gas crew are working on a brand new course that will be certain to challenge the riders and entertain spectators.  The Blairmore events have always been very popular with the riders.  The elevation changes, demanding terrain and breathtaking scenery make it a can't miss event. To add to theexcitement this year the Thunder in The Valley festival will be taking place on the same weekend.  This annual fireworks display is one of the largest in Western Canada and attracts thousands of visitors, many of whom will have the chance to watch enduro racing for the first time.  The added media attention will be a huge shot in the arm for the series and riders.

After the western rounds are in the books the series will travel east for Rounds 5 & 6 in Quebec on September 10th and 11th and the final rounds in Ontario the following weekend September 17th and 18th.  A formal press release on the eastern events, including details on a new Ontario location, will be coming out in a few weeks.

New adventure tourer on the way from Husqvarna?

According to reports on several pretty reputable motorcycle sites BMW Motorrad VP Hermann Bohrer has revealed the plans for a new Huskvarna adventure bike while speaking at a launch event for the BMW K1600GT in South Africa.

Bohrer indicated that the company’s Italian dirt bike brand will be coming out with something soon.  It is speculated that the  Husqvarna adventure bike won’t compete directly with BMW’s existing range, rather it’s believed that the emphasis will be on light weight and dirt-capability.

Hermann stated, “In Milan [we will] debut a maxi enduro Husqvarna combining German engineering with Italian design. It will have a two-cylinder engine and a bike light and agile.”

We say - Bring it on!

International Female Ride Day Rides Around the World for the 5th Year on Friday 6 May!

This year International Female Ride Day celebrates its fifth year of women riders getting on their motorcycles to JUST RIDE. With four years of history bringing awareness for women riders, the force created and expected for the fifth year of this globally synchronized action will be nothing less than phenomenal! More women, and more countries are including themselves in the campaign and those already participating are bumping up the game plan with expanded actions for Friday May 6th.

Countless women riders participate year after year delighting in their role to “just ride” on International Female Ride Day. For them, this annual occasion is unlike any other motorcycle event and has become the activity “not to be missed” in women riders’ agendas. “The growth and dedication each year of proud and enthusiastic participants who have supported the concept from the get-go, is wonderful. The excitement and enthusiasm for being part of the only global campaign for women riders continues to catch on like wildfire! Women devotedly prepare to ride and unite on this synchronized day around the world!” says Vicki Gray, the founder of the International Female Ride Day and of MOTORESS. “For the 5th year we’ve included an image of the world to the yearly icon. This of course signifies the campaigns global action. It will also be the design on our very sought after collectible International Female Ride Day t-shirt”.

Since its introductory year in 2007 International Female Ride Day has experienced spectacular growth along with endorsement by key motorcycle industry leaders, renowned female rider clubs and international governing bodies such as Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). “We here at BMW Motorrad Canada are very proud to be a supporter of International Female Ride Day”, states Norman Wells, Director of BMW Motorrad Canada. “For many years now we have deployed our own initiatives for female riders as we recognize this segment as a growing and very important one to overall success of the motorcycle industry. We wish all participants a great day and hope that MOTORESS will continue to experience growth with the event here in Canada and globally”, he adds.

The campaign’s growth continued even amidst a struggling world economy that heavily affected the motorsport industry at large. For this 5th edition, Vicki Gray observes the continuous recognition of the event. “The popularity of this event comes from the concept that it invites women riders of all ages, styles and forms of motorcycling to take lead and play a role. Plus it’s a lot of fun! The campaign is a reality and it’s obvious by it’s participated numbers, it’s here to stay!” adds Vicki.

Sport bike, cruiser, scooter, off-road, touring or competition, regardless of what type or style of motorcycling interest, International Female Ride Day makes one simple request of women – Just Ride! Get on your bikes, be out there and be visible. The concept has assembled its power and participation in this simple, worldwide-synchronized theme linking a chain of women through the shared activity of motorcycling. It's one day to celebrate and highlight the many numbers of women who share their passion for the sport. The fact that every female rider participating on May 6th is a role model for others not yet taken the step to enjoy motorcycling, has added to the event’s intentions and participation.

International FEMALE RIDE DAY “fever” significantly magnifies each year and 2011 expects to host and welcome more riders and participants than in year’s prior. Canada, United States, Australia, England, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Poland, Israel, Qatar, Denmark and Russia as well as other countries will again be contributing to the campaign in compelling numbers. In 2010, International Female Ride Day was recognized by the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM).

Sackville motorcyclist helps others get back on the road

Sackville business owner Jimi Swinamer is using his new motorcycle clothing store, Riding in Style, to promote a charity designed to help motorcyclists after a riding accident."Bikers Down: Toad Memorial Fund" was formed in 2008 by Swinamer - the current chairman - and four other  bikers in memory of popular HRM bike builder Mike "Toad" Roach. They strive to help provide temporary financial assistance to people injured while riding their motorcycle.

Swinamer was quoted in the HalifaxNewsNet as saying, " Members of the Society are committed to helping after the fact, but they are also dedicated to helping prevent accidents in the first place. In conjunction with Safety Services Nova Scotia, they work hard to promote motorcycle and car operator safety."We're hoping the government will partner up with us to help promote awareness." said Swinamer. "I know that in 2007, 12 people were killed in accidents. People need to be educated."Fifty-six-year-old Swinamer was an officer with the Halifax police for 29 years and nine months when a serious accident forced him to retire in 2004.

Does it work? You bet!

Chris Jennings had helped them raise money in the past but didn't know that he himself would be at the receiving end of monies collected. Jennings was in serious  accident in November 2010 in which he broke multiple bones and had injuries to his shoulder and arm as well as a collapsed lung. He applied for assistance and after the society confirmed the details of the accident and that it wasn't related to drug or alcohol use the father of four was given some much needed financial support.

TechSpec Canada and Motocross Racer Liam O’Farrell Team Up for 2011 MX Season

Mike Rice, Director of Marketing and Sponsorships for Lean Angle Canada, the exclusive Canadian distributor of TechSpec Gripster Grip Pads, is proud to welcome South African MXer Liam O'Farrell to our team for 2011. Liam’s sponsorship also aligns with a price reduction on all models of TechSpec Gripsters grip pads.

O'Farrell will be competing as a Pro in the 2011 Ontario and Quebec Provincial Motocross series in the Pro MX1 class with the Orange Motorsports Team aboard a KTM 450 SX-F. The Port Rowan, ON based rider will also compete in select rounds of the 2011 CMRC Monster Energy Motocross Nationals.

He has accomplished much over his nineteen years of racing internationally including, winning both the 2007 South African MX1 and MX2 National Motocross Champions. In 2010 O'Farrell wrapped up his season 11th overall in the MX1 Pro CMRC Monster Energy Motocross Nationals and he has been working extremely hard to prepare for the upcoming season.

TechSpec Gripster grip pads have been traditionally thought of as a product for sport bike riders. This past year many of our sponsored road racers had outstanding seasons including: Andrew Nelson - 2nd overall in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, Steven Nickerson – 3rd overall in the Canadian Amateur Sport Bike Championship and Mike Bevan – S.O.A.R. Expert Superbike Championship and 600 Championship. Gripsters are engineered to improve control and technique on a variety of powersports machines including motocross and enduro motorcycles as well as ATVs. The TechSpec Gripster grip pads have also been proven to enhance body positioning, reduce fatigue, and protects a rider’s tank or body work without harming their gear. The proprietary "Releasable/Reusable" adhesive ensures that riders can remove, adjust and reposition the grip pads to suit their particular riding style.

In conjunction with the introduction of TechSpec Gripster grip pads to the Canadian Motocross scene, through Liam’s sponsorship, Lean Angle Canada is extremely proud to announce that the retail price of the pad kits will be reduced effective February 14th, 2011. Customers will need to contact their local dealer to find out how much they are going to save.

“A combination of a stronger Canadian dollar and benefits realized from the HST has allowed us to pass on savings to the people who matter the most to us; the Canadian motorcycle rider. By reducing our pricing on Gripster grip pads Lean Angle and our valued dealers anticipate that now, more than ever, all riders will be able to experience the benefits of our pads.” stated Steve Reed, President, Lean Angle Canada. “Ultimately it will also benefit our dealers who are at the very heart and soul of the motorcycle community. They add value to the product, are the face of the industry to the customer and important to their local economies.”

Lean Angle Canada hopes that everyone will join them in and cheering on Liam this season and are extremely proud to have such a great racer as an ambassador of the TechSpec brand.

“The product feels amazing, it is strong and gives great grip on the bike, allowing me to have more control of my bike.” said O'Farrell “I'm really looking forward to riding for TechSpec and representing this great product for the 2011 season.”

Zero announces 2011 product line with significant upgrades

Here's a press release from the folks at Zero. There's a lot of US specific information in there but a lot that's relevant to a Canadian audience too.

Canadian Content Update: The 2011 motorcycles will only be available mid-March and Canadian Distributor National Motorsports will not be exhibiting the 2011 models at the Montreal Motorcycle Show. Please note that the Canadian pricing is equivalent to vehicle pricing from the U.S.

Zero Motorcycles today announced its highly anticipated 2011 product line alongside a strategy for continued leadership of the global electric motorcycle industry. This offers riders greater mobility by giving them access to a rapidly growing network of charge stations. The entire lineup is equipped with upgraded suspension systems, a more intelligent and rugged Z-Force powertrain, more precise charge indicators, new higher performance brakes and industry-standard component features to provide owners with more aftermarket options. Other highlights to the product line include street legal configurations of the dirt bikes and a new maintenance free belt drive for the street and dual sport models.

“During the past year, our Engineering and Manufacturing teams have benefitted from experienced new leadership and the results are clear. In close coordination, they have been working overtime to design and build the world’s finest collection of electric motorcycles,” said Gene Banman, CEO of Zero Motorcycles.

“Our 2011 model line is composed of exceptionally high quality electric motorcycles that balance performance, range, weight, affordability and availability. We are excited to announce such major changes across the entire model line and to also be setting new industry standards in the way we report on our motorcycles’ performance specifications.”

Nearly every component of the Zero S and Zero DS has seen major upgrades and improvements. With a bold and completely new look, the street and dual sport models will become the world’s first production electric motorcycles to feature a maintenance free belt drive system. The quiet operation of the drivetrain, when combined with each of the motorcycles’ overall improvements, yields a sophisticated silence during riding that speaks to their overall solid build quality. Zero has also increased the capacity of the power packs by 12.5% to improve the motorcycles’ range. Among the other upgrades are more robust wheels, a new HB Performance braking system, tires with better grip, more robust hardware, new aggressive profile foot pegs and an integrated ignition switch and lock. Unique to the Zero S, it has been lowered by two inches to improve street handling and the new overall package gives it an eye-catching naked look.

Zero Motorcycles has also made major changes to its off-road line. For the first time, the company will deliver street-legal configurations of both its trail and motocross dirt bikes, Zero X and Zero MX respectively. The ability to legally ride the electric off-road motorcycles on the street opens countless new possibilities for enthusiasts as well as a new market for Zero. Street-legal versions include additional components such as headlights, taillights, side stands, dashes, sensors and different gearing.

Both the Zero X and Zero MX are better performing and more robust than ever before. They have stouter wheels, new tires, a more robust HB Performance braking system, new aggressive foot pegs and an integrated ignition switch and lock. Their motors are energized using a beautifully refined aluminum power pack that is highly durable and easy to swap in less than sixty seconds. To maximize control, Zero has customized each motorcycles’ suspension internals to give them a more fluid and compliant motion under rough conditions. Unique to only the Zero MX, the 2011 model uses a motor mounted Z-Force Air Induction System to cool its new and more powerful Agni motor. Designed to ride harder, faster and longer, it represents the most competitive dirt bike that Zero has released to consumers.

The Zero S, Zero DS, Zero X and Zero MX are all available now through Zero Motorcycles’ website and will begin shipping in March. Each of the models carries a two year limited warranty. This is currently the best warranty offering in the electric motorcycle industry and is backed by an international service and support network. Zero operates on a strategy of building a ‘better motorcycle’ wherein each model balances performance, range, weight, affordability and availability. To consumers this translates into owning a high quality motorcycle that is supported by a company with a solid business foundation.

Vintage motorcyle illustrations

We came across a Canadian based company called RetroScope located in Ottawa who specialize in the creation of fine art prints "with a strong inclination towards classic periods such as Art Deco, WW2 and the 60s /70s".

They've got some really great looking motorcycle art on there and do custom work too.

2011 Ontario Cross Country Championship

On the heels of a ground breaking 2010 season that showed the Ontario racing community what was possible in off-road race promotion, WEC and CMRC are back with an exciting new calendar of racing for 2011!

“Our venues this year will continue to favour those riders who want a variety of terrain, fast courses, MX style obstacles and the opportunity for spectators,” explains WEC’s Sean Wiesner. “Media and sponsor friendly racing is the future, and off-road racers have been hiding in the woods for too long. We will continue in our mission to bring off-road racing into the mainstream.”

CMRC President Mark Stallybrass continues, “Following WEC’s successful inaugural year of staging Cross Country events in Ontario, the upcoming year looks to be taking positive steps forward with new venues, newly established partnerships between offroadmotorcycles.ca, MXP and CMRC ensuring greater publicity and exposure, plus incentive programs aimed at attracting motocross racers to Cross Country events. CMRC Compétition in Quebec will offer a complete series in 2011 as well, so Cross Country racing has a very bright future in Canada.”

“2011 will bring more sponsors and more money to the riders. We will continue with our 100% Pro payback that puts money back into the pockets of the fastest racers. The Wiesner Insurance Holeshot Award will continue to present $100 at every round to the Pro rider who is the fastest to make it to the first turn,” says Wiesner. He adds, “New for this year will be the Wiesner Insurance Fastest Lap Award. Highlighting our flawless and proven timekeeping system, this award will present $100 at every round to the rider who puts in the fastest lap in a class that is selected randomly at each event. It could be Intermediate, Beginner or maybe the Mini Senior class…you won’t know until the day of the event. Put in one smoking-fast lap and the money is yours! New sponsors will be announced as we approach the season opener, as support from the Motorcycle Industry and aftermarket is behind us.”

Last year scheduling conflicts, weather and land use issues prevented some of our lofty goals from being realized. This year we will bring racing at some facilities we all wanted to see on the schedule. Racing at Walton has been a dream for many over the years, and 2011 is the year it will happen in off-road! Parry Sound, the site of two back-to-back WEC World Championships and two stellar CEC events, will also be on the calendar.

Motocross facilities like Gopher Dunes will be realized, as well as the proven Motopark, with completely revised and longer courses. Favourites from last year, including Wingham and Burnt River, will guarantee to please. Our grand finale at Wheatley, hosted by the great folks at the Erie Ramblers, will again showcase a course that incorporates features from all varieties of dirt racing.

Big news this year is that our fantastic Pee Wee riders are now competing for Championship status. Last year WEC introduced the concept of Pee Wee Cross-Country racing. They were introduced as a support class, as nobody knew if there were enough young riders out there to justify a Championship class. The riders came and WEC learned these “future stars” deserve what their older racers have… a true championship!

Online race license purchase is up and running on our site  just as we introduced last year. The cost is the same as last year (yet subject to HST now). Get registered quickly to confirm your race number from last year. If you don’t purchase online we are at every event registering new license holders at no extra cost.

The complete 8 round schedule will be released shortly with 4 spring events and 4 fall events counting as seperate championships.  Please keep an eye on our site www.worldendurocanada.com for details. See you at the Races!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Team Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

335 horsepower Triumph Rocket 3

We came across this YouTube clip of a supercharged Triumph Rocket 3 that was reportedly prep'd by Echo Cycle in Edmonton, Alberta.

According to some of the comments...  "It made 335hp at the wheel and 302 ft torque, (pump gas 18 psi) myself (on the bike) and Kurt from Echo Cycle built this bike for a customer. The customer is only about 5'8" and maybe 150 lbs soaking wet, but he loves it."

New Moto Guzzi's shown at dealer conference

The 2012 Moto Guzzi V7 Scrambler and Moto Guzzi California were shown at a the Piaggio Group’s Monte Carlo dealer conference on Friday and some photo's promptly leaked to the Internet. Rather than let that marketing opportunity fizzle the folks at Moto Guzzi decided to go ahead and release a few official photo's - ahead of schedule.

From the looks of it the California is going to use a new 1,400cc engine - not the 90 degree 1,151cc v-twin used in the Norge and Stelvio.

If you're looking for something a little different and classic looking, this might be the bike for you.

According to their Canadian website there's only dealers in Alberta, BC, Ontario, and Quebec at the moment.
