Jordan Szoke appearing in racer reality TV show

Brantford Ontario native and motorcycle racer Jordan Szoke will soon be appearing in a reality TV program called Hot Lap. While he's typically not a fan of reality TV programs this is a little different.

This program allows amateur riders a chance to be the fastest at one of 10 tracks in North America throughout 2011. The show follows the trials and tribulations of the amateur riders and either progress through the show or crash.

Szoke won't be doing the racing, the seven-time Parts Canada Superbike Champ is far from an amateur! He'll be functioning as team coach and technical adviser for the show. He'll be on site to assist riders set up their bikes and offer advice.

Shooting begins during the International Motorcycle Supershow, Jan. 6-8, at Toronto's International Centre. Locations for the races or what channel will air the show haven't been announced yet.

Szoke indicates that he sees Hot Lap as "a great chance for amateurs to experience the life of professional riders, which is more than just racing."

$140,000 Ducati lowsided

The fellow who owns the bike featured in this video is apparently referred to as “Desmo Dave” and he's apparently got a little bit of money invested in his 1098 R.

He bought a 1098 R and an 1198 RS factory race bike, then had all the parts taken off the RS and put on the R’s frame. The R was sold as a road bike, so the frame’s VIN allows him to ride what's basically a Superbike on the road. Not a cheap thing to do apparently; it's supposedly worth approximately $140,000.

Here's the crash video then another video with Desmo Dave talking about why this bike costs so much. Two words - titanium everything.

How NOT to do a Stoppie

Should you be so inclined as to try performing a stoppie take a little knowledge from the experience of this guy. One handed cross up stoppies are NOT a good idea!

Least he wasn't going too fast. Bet he's glad his buddies captured this and posted it on YouTube for him.

David Fretigne withdraws from 2012 Dakar

David Frétigné, French rider of Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain, has to withdraw from the Dakar Rally 2012. After his vertebrae injury suffered at the Rally dos Sertoes in August, David is on a very good way of recovering. He was allowed from his medical team to train fully for the Dakar since a few weeks.

Unfortunately his final medical exams showed that his injury has not made enough progress to risk a start at the Dakar, known as the hardest race of its kind in the world. His team wishes him strength for his further recovery and will miss him at the starting line on 1st of January.

David Frétigné: "I am very sad that I can finally not start, after all the good hopes and the hard work to come back. I wish my team all the best at the race, and will be with them with my thoughts. I will continue to work hard on my physical condition, it was just a little bit too early to risk a start, but I will be back soon in full strength."

Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain announced Jose Manuel Pellicer as short notice new team rider, in order not to leave the starting spot of rider number twelve empty.

If Ken Block rode a motorcycle

If Ken Block - that DC Shoe guy who scored himself a WRC ride by posting a hugely popular Gymkhana video (google it) - rode a motorcycle instead of driving a car it might look a little something like what this guy Jorian Ponomareff is doing.

Impressive bike control!

Motorcycle riding on the Kananaskis Trail in Alberta

Jeff over at VRIDETV has posted a new video of a motorcycle ride on the Kananskis Trail in Alberta and listed us in the credits.  Thanks Jeff!

Here's his description of the ride.

Travelling in Kananaskis Country is incredible, it's filled with beautiful scenery, wildlife and windy roads. The Kananaskis Trail (Highway 40) begins about 20 minutes East of Canmore Alberta and is definitely one of my top five favourite roads to ride. It was a real treat to capture these big male elks rattling each others antlers near the end of this video.

Yamaha releases 2012 TMAX

Yamaha releases All-New 2012 TMAX: The styling and flare of a sport bike; the comfort and practicality of a scooter

Yamaha’s 2012 TMAX is the ‘R1’ of the scooter world. Other than its step-through design, the all-new TMAX features sport bike inspired torque, handling and braking power!

“The TMAX is a very interesting machine,” says Yamaha Motor Canada’s Motorcycle Product Manager, John Bayliss. “For sure it’s practical, comfortable and fuel efficient like most scooters, but the TMAX also offers a very exciting ride. From the engine and chassis, to brakes and suspension, the TMAX features impressive performance in every category. Even the most skilled rider would be amazed with its ability to react like a sport bike!”

Inside the TMAX is a 530cc, fuel-injected 4-stroke engine that delivers instant throttle response and great power; a unique, CF die cast aluminum frame contributes to its sporty handling, and large diameter wheels and motorcycle inspired suspension create an agile yet stable ride. This machine is great for zipping through busy downtown traffic, but equally as comfortable cruising along major highways.

BMW Motorrad Canada Announces 2012 Product and Pricing updates

A big Press Release from BMW Motorrad Canada today with product updates and 2012 product line information - even some 2013 stuff.  It's a big one!  Enjoy:

BMW Motorrad Canada is pleased to announce an expanded product lineup for 2012, highlighted by an emphasis on Urban Mobility and BMW’s first entry into the globally popular and growing scooter market.

BMW Introduces the C600 Sport and C650GT Maxi-Scooters

The challenges facing inner city traffic in the future, already being experienced today, will be growing traffic volume, rising energy costs, and increasing pressure on CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency.

Recognizing these challenges as they apply to single-track vehicles, and as an integral component of a BMW Group stragegy for sustainable mobility, BMW Motorrad is pleased to introduce two premium vehicles in the maxi scooter segment which address these challenges with innovative new concepts.

The BMW C600Sport and the BMW C650GT combine the outstanding riding characteristics of a motorcycle with the agility, weather protection and comfort of a scooter, creating a whole new dynamic riding experience.

Conceptually unique, the two BMW maxi scooters appeal to a wide target group: the C600Sport for riders with sporting preferences, and the C650GT for customers who place great emphasis on comfort and touring capability. Both BMW maxi scooters incorporate the unique, modern and dynamic design language of BMW Motorrad, setting a new benchmark in the scooter segment.

Powerful 2-cylinder inline engine with CVT.

The 2-cylinder water-cooled inline DOHC four-valve engine of the C600Sport and C650GT is an all-new development by BMW Motorrad with a displacement of 647 cc. Both models are equipped with electronic fuel injection and have a class-leading output of 60 hp at 7500 rpm, with maximum torque of 48.7 ft-lb at 6000 rpm.

With its cylinder bank inclined forward 70°, the compact engine contributes to a low center of gravity, while its 90° crank pin offset, 270° ignition spacing, and two balancer shafts minimize vibration. Lubrication is via a double oil pump dry sump and the stainless steel exhaust system incorporates a closed loop catalytic converter and oxygen sensor.

Power is transferred via a directly integrated CVT transmission with an automatic centrifugal clutch and a maintenance-free secondary chain drive running in an oil bath.

Responsive suspension and exceptional riding stability.

One objective in the development of the C600Sport and C650GT was to combine directional stability at highway speeds with agile handling in city traffic and vivid feedback to the rider – just like a motorcycle.

The design of the C600Sport and C650GT suspension features a torsionally rigid hybrid interconnection of a tubular steel bridge frame and a diecast aluminum unit at the swingarm bearing with the engine functioning as a load-bearing member.

At the front, an upside down fork presents a generous fixed fork diameter of 40 mm. The rear employs a reclining spring strut on the left side. Spring travels are an identical 115 mm.

Both the C600Sport and C650GT roll on a 3.5 x 15“ five spoke diecast light alloy wheel fitted with a 120/70-15 tire. The 4.5 x 15“ rear wheel is fitted with a 160/60-15 tire.

Powerful braking system with standard ABS.

The new C600Sport and C650GT are fitted with duel 270mm disc brakes with double-piston floating calipers at the front and a single 270mm disc with double-piston caliper at the rear. BMW Motorrad dual-channel ABS is standard equipment on both models.

A separate rear caliper parking brake is automatically engaged on deployment of the side stand, ensuring stability when stationary.

Multifunctional instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster of the C600Sport and C650GT presents a large, easily readable LCD display with integrated tachometer and analogue speedometer. In addition to the standard complement of fuel level guage, clock, and grip-heater level indicator, an on-board computer, standard on both models, also includes functions for monitoring exterior temperature, fuel consumption, oil level, average speed, date, and (optional) tire pressure control.

Unique Character for each model.

Distinguishing elements of the C600 Sport and C650GT are:

Ergonomics
The C600Sport employs a more dynamic seat position with flatter handlebars, sporty seat design for both one and two persons, and sporty footrests for the passenger; seat height 810 mm.
The C650GT seat position emphasizes comfort with higher handlebars, more comfortable and larger seat with adjustable backrest for the rider, and foot boards for the passenger as well; seat height 780 mm.

Windscreen
C600Sport - manually adjustable to three positions.
C650GT – electrically adjustable over 10 cm for even greater comfort and protection from wind and weather.

Body and design
- C600Sport – sporty and spartan panels. The lean rear flanks with dynamic upswing and emphatic body edges emphasize lightness and dynamics.
- C650GT - generously sized panel parts for outstanding comfort and protection against wind and weather.

Headlights, turn indicators, rear light- C600Sport - front turn indicators integrated in the panelling, twin circular headlights with two side lights on the left and right, LED rear light cluster with single turn indicators
- C650GT - front turn indicators integrated in the mirrors, twin circular headlights with side lights between them presenting a vertical light strip of three elements, LED rear light cluster with integrated turn indicators.

Stowage space- C600Sport - with world premiere FlexCase/variable stowage space concept in the tail under the seat. Despite its sporty, spartan tail section, two helmets can be easily stowed in the parked vehicle.
- C650GT - large stowage space of about 60 litres in the rear, also accomodating two helmets.

The luggage compartments share LED lighting and can also be equipped with an auxilliary power socket (accessory).

BMW Christmas Postcard

Can't remember if it was last year that BMW started this electronic greeting card thing for Christmas.  It's been a year or two that they've been doing this.  This year it's a bunch of BMW motorcycles and you can type out a message that scrolls across the screen or stick with the default message.

Gimmicky but it might appeal to some folks looking to send a e-greeting to motorcycle enthusiasts.

Öhlins Launches World’s First Aftermarket Mechatronic Suspension to USA Market

Öhlins Racing AB has the world’s first aftermarket electronic suspension system (ESA), designed to replace the electronically adjustable suspension on the BMW R 1200 GS ESA. With its Öhlins TTX shocks and Öhlins ESA ECU, it’s the most advanced mechatronic suspension system available, from its dynamic mechanics to its autonomic electronics.

Öhlins’ mechatronic suspension system will be revealed to the USA market at the Long Beach, California IMS show this weekend, December 9-11. It will be on display at the Öhlins USA booth, number 1560, mounted and functioning on a 2011 BMW R 1200 GS ESA. Also on display will be new product for sportbikes, MX bikes, and American V-Twins from Milwaukee.

At the forefront in the development of electronically adjustable suspension, this latest mechatronic suspension system was developed out of Öhlins extensive experience with creating one of the World’s first production electronic suspension systems, found on the Ducati Multistrada. Equally, it evolved from Öhlins’ historic win in World Superbike with a Yamaha YZF-R1 fitted with electronic suspension in 2007, piloted by Noriyuki Haga. Öhlins’ performance reputation complements BMW’s heritage of quality, giving riders an appropriate upgrade for their touring needs.

The mechatronic system from Öhlins interacts directly with the R 1200 GS ESA’s primary ECU, plugging directly into the existing user interface. The kit includes front and rear TTX shocks, a wiring harness, and a dedicated ESA ECU, utilizing the OEM display and rider controls for adjustment. As evidence of its smart-as-heck intelligence, the Öhlins mechatronic system features a semi-active function, automatically adjusting the suspension damping in relationship to the motorcycle’s speed. With the latest technology of twin-tube TTX shocks mated to a brilliant ECU, the mechatronic system from Öhlins provides a double upgrade: an athlete-grade suspension mated to head-of-the-class electronics.

Using the BMW controls on the handlebars, the Öhlins system allows the rider to choose between BMW’s multiple driving modes and damping levels, along with various spring pre-load settings on the rear shock. But that’s not all. In ‘Comfort’ mode, the Öhlins ECU monitors the bike’s speed, and when it exceeds 80kph (49mph) the suspension’s damping is automatically altered to the firmer ‘Normal’ setting. When the speed exceeds 120kph (74mph), the damping is further increased to ‘Sport’ mode, for a more sporting controllability. When the speeds decrease, the damping reverts back to its original settings through the intermediate ‘Normal’ mode. This feature makes Öhlins’ ESA replacement system the World’s first autonomic aftermarket suspension system.

The Öhlins mechatronic suspension system also allows riders to customize the spring rate on their R 1200 GS ESA through fitment of new springs as well as have their shocks fully serviced and maintained by one of the many specialist Öhlins Centers across the USA. The Öhlins BMW R1200GS ESA replacement system is now available, at the incredibly low MSRP of $3,279.00.

Öhlins USA distributes and services the world’s leading performance suspension for automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles. Öhlins develops its proprietary and innovative suspension components at the highest levels of racing from open-wheel car racing, to Moto GP, to off-road competition on two and four wheels. Öhlins USA also provides training for service centers and dealers. www.ohlinsusa.com.

Most amazing motorcycle jump

Imagine you're out riding your dirt bike. You're approaching a jump. Something you've probably done many times before but it's still exciting. You accelerate to the base of the jump, you're airborne - you let off the gas - you can see the landing - there's lots of noise, vibration and excitement. As you land you brace yourself and let your legs absorb some of the impact...

Now imagine that again only this time - imagine you're also blind. What!? That's right. Blind.  Matthew Wadsworth is a blind musician who also happens to love motorcycles and he wants to set a world record by jumping 100 feet.

Here's a little more information about the video:

In the world of 17th-century lute music, Matthew Wadsworth is a star. But few of his listeners would guess his other passion: jumping motorcycles.

That's because Matt is blind.

The documentary begins with Matt and his coach, Micky Dymond, somewhere out in the desert. They've begun training for an incredible feat.

The rest of the story hasn't happened yet.

Matt's jump blog can be found at http://www.makingthejump.com/

Honda RC-E walkaround

Honda has given the public a showing of a new electric concept at the Tokyo Motor Show and well, it's a beauty! Classic 60's styling with the electric engine from the Insight Hybrid shoehorned into the frame.

Add to that Brembo brakes, and Ohlins shock and forks - even an LED headlights built into the front fairing. It's said to offer 600cc bike performance in a 250cc weight bike. If it offers some range and they can get pricing right - Honda might have a winning combination here.

What's that saying? Build it and they will come? Not likely we'll be seeing this in showrooms anytime soon but if public reaction is strong enough maybe Honda will put more serious thought into developing a mainstream electric bike.
