Amarok short film - electric motorcycle

Michael Uhlarik hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia right now but he's hoping to manufacture the Amarok P1 electric racing motorcycle in rural Nova Scotia. Just a couple places under consideration at the moment; Lunenburg or Wolfville perhaps.

I know that people in Nova Scotia are cheering for him and hoping for success. Here's a look at some of the design and strategy for the Amarok motorcycle:

International Female Ride Day - Gearing up for 3 May 2013

The seventh annual International Female Ride Day occurs this year on Friday 3 May, just under three months away! Already record-breaking numbers of women motorcycle and scooter riders around the world are preparing to take part in the one-of-a-kind ride day happening now referred to by most as a women and motorcycling phenomenon.

International Female Ride Day makes one simple request of women – “Just Ride”. It is an all brands, and all motorcycle types event. Women who ride sport bikes, cruisers, touring or scooters whether on road, off-road or track- and of all ages- take part. Get on your bikes, be out there and be visible is the events’ straightforward simple action. Its additional success is a result of it being a globally synchronized ride creating a universal chain of women riders- around the world on one special day. International Female Ride Day is a day to celebrate and highlight the countless current and growing numbers of women riders while underlining the fun and fervour women share in the activity.

“The enthusiasm from women riders this year is indescribable! The 2013 momentum began early even the facebook page and the group area buzz of networking activities. Not a day passes where we’re not made aware of a new happening or initiative either by individuals, clubs or the industry. This definitely flags an enormous message to the value this event authors and the fondness of its participants the world over. Its power is remarkable and truly what I had hoped it would become when I first introduced it”, states Vicki Gray, founder MOTORESS International and International Female Ride Day.

Since the first edition in 2007, International Female Ride Day magnified in popularity with each passing year. Women from the world over – United States, France, Canada, Australia, Qatar, Greece, Italy, Russia, The Netherlands, England, Israel, South Africa and many more – celebrate this event and “Just Ride” in unison, on the first Friday in May. “It truly is a global phenomenon and I’m thrilled about reaching toward another summit of participation in 2013. This includes the ever popular collectible ride day t-shirt- once again in huge demand. The IFRD image, dressed uniquely every year, has become a true icon”, adds Vicki.

International Female Ride Day has gained the full support of the motorcycle and motorsport industry’s key brands as well as prominent associations/federations including the FIM - Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme in Geneva, Switzerland.

BMW Motorrad sales down vs last year

BMW Motorrad deliveries reached a total of 4,818  vehicles in 2013 vs  5,237 for the same period last year. That represents an 8.0% decrease.

Husqvarna Motorcycles supplied a total of 587 vehicles to the Husqvarna dealer network in January vs 544 for the same period last year. That was a 7.9% increase.

It'll be interesting to see what the sale of Husqvarna does for the brand. The Nuda appeared to be a bike with some great potential and I'm sure the Canadian dealers were excited to have the new 650's in the line up as well. I would have guessed they would have seen a surge in sales with the current strategy.

It'll take some time to build consumer confidence again.

Zero Motorcycles mobile apps -rider modifications

Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced the release of its highly anticipated mobile application for Apple iOS and Android devices. The “Zero Motorcycles” app is the world’s first mobile application with the ability to control the performance characteristics of a production motorcycle. Connected via Bluetooth, the motorcycle pushes live, or archived, information from the motorcycle to the app on the rider’s mobile device. Featuring two basic modes, the app displays either a customizable riding dashboard or statistical data about the motorcycle. Riders can customize the riding dashboard with options such as percentage state of charge, torque, drivetrain component temperatures, battery amps and more. When parked, owners can view a lifetime of information about the motorcycle and have access to compelling statistics such as how much gas money they have saved.

“The Zero Motorcycles app marks the first time in history that a production motorcycle’s top speed, torque and regenerative braking can be easily adjusted by an owner in seconds. Not only is it fun, it also results in a riding experience that is truly customized to meet the unique needs of every individual,” said Scot Harden, Vice President of Marketing for Zero Motorcycles. “We encourage interested fans to download the app, play with it in Demo Mode and then schedule a test ride with their local dealer so that they can truly appreciate the Zero Motorcycles experience.”

Once paired to a motorcycle, owners can begin customizing settings and feeling good about a host of compelling economical and ecological reasons to ride electric everyday. Among the customizable settings are fields to enter the owner’s cost of electricity, cost of a gallon of gas and the miles per gallon of their alternative vehicle. To bring a little extra joy to every ride, the app uses this information to calculate statistics, such as how much money has been saved on gas, the unbelievably low cost of energy consumed per mile and how much CO2 has been prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

The entire 2013 Zero Motorcycles lineup features the ability to connect to each motorcycle’s cutting edge Z-ForceTM powertrain. Seamlessly integrated into the powertrain, the app also allows owners to send their motorcycle’s diagnostic reports to a technician so that it can be quickly and easily reviewed. A fantastic deal for owners, there is no additional cost for any of this functionality and the Zero Motorcycles app is free. More information, a user guide and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Zero Motorcycles mobile app webpage. The app can be downloaded at:

Rate hikes for Saskatchewan riders

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is requesting the province's rate review panel to approve a rate change as part of a package of rate adjustments scheduled to go into effect in April.

Under the proposed changes, almost all motorcycle users will pay double-digit increases, some will pay even more. Rates could go up an average of 73 percent for motorcyclists in that province.

SGI wants to remove the cap that dictates how much rates can increase in a given year.

The most dramatic change will be sport bikes and bikes with engines over 400 cubic centimetres.

Explaining the proposed hikes, SGI president Andrew Cartmell said motorcycle users have relatively high injury claim costs. The proposed increase is "significant", but with the rates as they currently are, motorcycle users are essentially being subsidized by all the other drivers, he said.

"We're basically collecting, in some cases, not even half the premium we should be depending on the type of motorcycle," he said.

The rate review panel will hold public hearings on the proposed increases.

The higher rates will take effect Aug. 31 if they are approved

Schuberth North America Adds Two New Team Members

Schuberth announces two new additions to its North American Dealer Development team. Ariel Krawczyk has joined Schuberth North America as the Special Events Coordinator, and Glen West as an internal Dealer Development Representative.

"We are proud to add Ariel and Glen to our team of high caliber professionals representing the prestigious Schuberth brand," reports Randy Northrup, Schuberth North America's Vice President. "Ariel is extremely knowledgeable about our products and customers and will be a great support to our dealer network. Additionally, with the expansion of the Schuberth helmet line, we brought Glen on to help provide extra support to our dealers. Glen is an avid rider and has a great understanding of the market. I have worked with Glen in the past and am pleased to have him as part of the Schuberth team."

In her new role, Ariel will be roving the country with the Schuberth Event Van, supporting and training dealers and displaying Schuberth products at consumer events. She is an avid motorcyclist and adventure tourer, previously on staff with MotoQuest where she worked closely with Schuberth as a strategic partner. This natural transition of skills and knowledge make her an asset to the Schuberth North America team from the start.

"I've had enthusiasm for the brand from the first moment I slipped on a C3," says Ariel. "The more I learn about the engineering and quality control that goes into the production of Schuberth helmets, the more excited I am to represent such a great company."

Glen will be based in-house at the Schuberth North America facility in Southern California. He will be responsible for dealer programs, sales, and event support in the eastern territory.

"I'm thrilled to represent a brand with such a rich heritage and products of unparalleled performance," says Glen. "I'm looking forward to bringing my relationship-focused approach to the dealer development operation of Schuberth North America and to help our dealers maximize their sales."

2013 Halifax International Motorcycle wraps up

The 2013 Halifax International Motorcycle Show wrapped up this Sunday and turnout was affected by the snowstorm that hit the east coast on Saturday and Sunday but the die-hard enthusiasts still made it out and enjoyed easy access to motorcycles from every brand.

Check out our big picture gallery from the show. The Honda FB6 was definitely a stand-out motorcycle for me. It's impressive looking and feels all day comfortable.

One lucky attendee took home a Honda CBR250R as a door prize. His odds were a little better because of all the snow!

Amarok live at the Halifax International Motorcycle Show

Amarok Racing is proud to present the P1A, Canada's first electric racing motorcycle at the Halifax International Motorcycle Show from February 8th to 10th at the Cunard Centre. The P1A prototype, designed and manufactured entirely in Canada, is a high performance electric racing motorcycle that marries proven aerospace monocoque technology to manufacture a vehicle that has paradigm breaking performance while dramatically reducing cost and enhancing the track riding experience.

Since making its public debut at the Toronto International Motorcycle Show last December, the Amarok P1A has already won recognition and praise from a wide array of specialty press, and within the motorcycle community, as well as been reported on two national television networks. The motorcycle was named the second best Canadian product design of 2012 by the Canadian Design Resource, while the Amarok company was short listed in the top ten of the Innovacorp Nova Scotia clean tech business competition. Track testing in the fall of 2012 revealed a motorcycle with great potential and solidified our resole to compete internationally in the prestigious TTXGP all electric motorcycle racing series throughout 2013.

Visit Amarok Racing at booth 23a, meet the team, discover the P1A and support Canada's first electric racing team. The Halifax International Motorcycle Show opens Friday February 8th at 4pm and runs until Sunday evening.

Rockstar Energy/Yamaha OTSFF signs Shawn Maffenbeiber

OTSFF Sports Marketing Group’s Andre Laurin is pleased to announce the signing of Shawn Maffenbeier to Team Rockstar Energy Yamaha for the 2013 CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals.

The Swift Current, SK native will campaign the MX2 National Championship for the factory team aboard the new YZ250 2-stroke.

“We believe in Shawn’s potential to make a dent in the MX2 title hunt and we’re glad to have him aboard for the season,” said Laurin. “Shawn has a long history riding Yamaha product, which should make the transition to our team a smooth one for him.”

Maffenbeier, who won pretty well every amateur motocross championship in his home province of Saskatchewan at one time or another, made his breakthrough on the CMRC Nationals scene during the 2011 motocross season, when he traded his No. 23 plate for a noteworthy No. 6 in the MX1 class.
The highly anticipated 2012 season proved to be filled with highs and lows for Maffenbeier, which saw him finish the MX1 points chase with a No. 10 ranking. Maffenbeier experienced consistency issues and finding the right focus, something he hopes to put behind him this year.

“I’m quite excited to have been presented with the opportunity to sign with Rockstar Energy Yamaha, OTSFF. I’m looking forward to the challenge of contesting the MX2 class, and I’m definitely aiming for the No.1 plate,” Maffenbeier said.

Zero Motorcycles launches new website

Zero Motorcycles has launched a brand new website as its 2013 lineup arrives in dealerships. The premium site delivers a host of great information on Zero’s cutting-edge technology and includes an abundance of high-end new multimedia. Whether interested to learn more about electric powertrain technology, a fan of the brand or simply intrigued to watch Zero Motorcycles customer videos, the site will capture viewers attention and is guaranteed to entertain.

Among the new videos are the first ever taken of the new 2013 electric motorcycle lineup in action, and in case viewers would like to actually hear the unique sound of the motorcycles, the videos are available with or without music. In a separate “customer video” gallery viewers can watch customers ride and speak about their personal experiences of owning their Zero. Some videos even feature models from as early as 2008. In addition, the site contains a wide variety of beautiful photography.

“Much like our new 2013 model line, Zero Motorcycles’ new website offers consumers a high-end experience that serves up great content through a clean and minimalist design,” said Chris Heimbuck, Director of Marketing for Zero Motorcycles. “We invite everyone to visit us online to learn more about the 2013 motorcycles, enjoy all the new photos and videos and schedule a demo ride on a new 2013 Zero with their nearest dealer.”

As Zero now has dealers around the world, the new site offers local versions with regional pricing, languages and information for eight countries. The website includes newly released detailed specifications for each model, as well as an abundance of information on what it really means to ride an electric motorcycle. The aptly named ”going electric” section of the site is derived from Zero’s popular brochure that carries the same name. It presents the economics of ownership, advantages of electric and introduces the “four factors” that impact range.

For consumers ready to take the next step, the site encourages interested riders to schedule a demo or even request a price quote from their local dealer. Many of the first models hitting dealerships will be quickly snapped up or are already slated to go to those who have pre-ordered. North American shipments began in January, while Europe will be receiving the new lineup in February. Zero Motorcycles’ new website can be found at

The ICEdot crash sensor pairs with your cell phone and mounts to your helmet. in case of an impact whereby you can't make a call out on your cell phone in a certain amount of time; maybe you're unconscious for example. In that event the ICEdot crash sensor senses an impact and sends out a text showing your whereabouts to your emergency contacts. Pretty slick. Pricing is said to be around $200 USD when available.
