Inside Motorcycles and the Penguin Riding School Provide Championship Support

Halifax, NS – The Atlantic Roadracing League (ARL) is excited to announce a new venture with Inside Motorcycles Magazine, and the Penguin Roadracing School. Since 1998, Inside Motorcycles has been “Canada’s Source for Motorcycle News.”  With its in-depth coverage of the Canadian motorcycle industry, Inside Motorcycles has become an indispensable resource for riders and racing enthusiasts across the country. The Penguin Roadracing School, in its 41st year is The Oldest Motorcycle Roadracing School in North America.  They are dedicated to helping new riders learn the basic skills necessary for a successful racing career, as well as tutoring the experienced racer who needs the competitive edge to get to the front of the pack.

Atlantic Roadracing League Kicks Off 2013 Season With High Performance Riding Academy In Association With Honda Canada and Pro Cycle

Halifax, NS - Atlantic Roadracing League (ARL) is excited to announce its continued partnerships for the 2013 season. This past weekend saw the first High Performance Riding Academy take place on Saturday and Sunday brought to you by Honda Canada in conjunction with Pro Cycle. This marks the third year in which Honda Canada has supported the High Performance Riding Academy in association with Pro Cycle, which brings students from all over the Atlantic Provinces to the Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia for the two day event.

When asked about the event, ARL President Andrew Murray stated, "We could not be happier with the turnout of students this year despite the questionable weather. We had 55 students, who participated in the two day event which focuses on how to better understand your motorcycle and what it is capable of on a closed circuit." He went on to say, "These riding academies, along with the private and semi-private riding schools we put on throughout the year would not be possible without the support of our partners such as Honda Canada and Pro Cycle."

ARL had some great feedback from students and friends alike Sunday evening following the event, Chalena Biggar who has participated in the Riding Academy a couple times said via Facebook, "Every time I go to this school it gets better and better! It's well organized and the instructors are so full
of knowledge and very helpful and encouraging. Without them I wouldn't have the confidence to start racing this year so thank you!!". Also from Facebook, Stephen Carrigan a first time participant said, "Thank you very much to the instructors that took the time to make this event amazing. Because of my experiences I will be back for track days and maybe give racing a go. Harley-Davidson World Ride Ready to Rumble June 23-24, 2013

The Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) invites Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders from around the world to join its members in celebrating the 110th Anniversary of Harley‑Davidson Motor Company and the 30th Anniversary of H.O.G., as they enjoy the freedom of the open road during the 2013 Harley-Davidson® World Ride, June 23-24, 2013.

“Harley-Davidson is celebrating two big anniversaries this year, and the World Ride is a great way for riders around the world to celebrate them with us,” said Harley Owners Group Director Ken Knuteson. “For these two days in June, we will join together to celebrate 110 years of great riding, and share the special bond that unites all Harley riders.”

In 2012, riders from 66 countries participated in the World Ride and collectively logged more than 12,552,883 kilometres. For 2013, the goal is for H.O.G. to raise the total distance to more than 16,000,000 kilometres. Whether it is a ride across town, across the country, or simply around the block to work, every kilometre counts and can be recorded by logging into the Harley-Davidson online mileage accumulator at, where a rolling odometer will be recording the collective distance travelled by all participants in the World Ride.

BMW Motorrad sells 11.5 % more vehicles in April

BMW Motorrad sells 11.5 % more vehicles in April. April 2013 is the most successful month in the history of BMW Motorrad with 14,587 BMW motorcycles sold.

Munich. In April BMW Motorrad sold 11.5% more vehicles than in the equivalent month last year. 14,587 units (previous year: 13,088 units) were supplied to customers worldwide last month. As of April, vehicle supplies total 39,319 motorcycles and maxi scooters (previous year: 37,461 units / + 5.0 %).

Heiner Faust, Vice President Sales and Marketing BMW Motorrad : "Five per cent growth as compared to the first four months of the previous year is certainly satisfying as far as we are concerned. It was April in particular that got us off to such a good start in 2013, having been the best month for sales in the entire history of BMW Motorrad. Like last year, the motorcycle markets are currently very varied. Development of the major markets Italy and Spain has been very weak due to economic conditions. However, we have been able to make up for this negative development with excellent sales in the USA, Brazil, other Latin American markets, Asia and Russia. Germany remains the single most important market by a wide margin. The model change to the new BMW R 1200 GS was the driving force behind this positive development. Response to the new machine has been very satisfying in all our core markets. 10,883 motorcycles were sold in the first four months alone. However, other models are very much in demand, too. 

For example the BMW HP4 - our new supersports bike - surpassed our expectations with over 1,300 units sold in 2013." 


    CTX700 Dual Clutch Transmission in 2013

    April 15, 2013 - Since its introduction in May 2010 on the VFR1200F, Honda’s unique Dual Clutch Transmission technology for motorcycles has grown steadily in popularity. Over 12,500 customers in Europe have now purchased Dual Clutch Transmission machines.


    In 2012, four new models were added to the list of machines offering Dual Clutch Transmission: the Integra*, NC700X, NC700S and Crosstourer.

    • The popular NC700X has seen its monthly percentage of Dual Clutch Transmission customers grow steadily from 10% to 44% from its launch in April 2012 to February 2013.
    • Sales of the Dual Clutch Transmission version of the Crosstourer adventure sports machine have also grown, from 25% to 70% of monthly sales in the year from February 2012 to February 2013.

    Today Honda confirms that, the CTX700 and CTX700N will join the ranks of Dual Clutch Transmission machines in the autumn of 2013. Both models will be equipped with the technology as standard, and will be among a number of new models to be shown at the EICMA show in Milan in November.

    Unveiled in February at the International Motorcycle Show in Chicago, the semi-faired CTX700 and naked CTX700N have been developed under the concept of “Comfort Touring Experience”.

    The machines’ 35kW 670cc inline parallel twin engine offers outstanding low to mid-range torque and fuel economy; its compact size and 62 degree forward tilt provides a low centre of gravity, which, coupled with the feet-forward riding position and 720mm seat height, create a unique combination of comfort and manoeuvrability. Add design cues from the unique GL1800 Gold Wing, and the results are two approachable A2 licence-friendly, affordable machines with a presence entirely of their own.

    The BMW Motorrad Days 2013 celebrates 90 years of BMW Motorrad.

    Munich/Garmisch-Partenkirchen.90 years of BMW Motorrad: this is the motto of the 13th BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This year the world's biggest BMW Motorrad meeting will take place from July 5th - 7th.

    Once again, the organisers are expecting more than 30,000 motorcyclists from all over the world to meet at the Hausberg. As before, three days will be spent at the foot of the Zugspitz massif with everything focused on two-wheel riding pleasure. In addition to lots of new products, breathtaking stunts, motor racing stars, test rides and curiosities, guests can also look forward to the event's now legendary party atmosphere. The program of activities covers such a broad range that everyone is guaranteed to have a great time, young and old alike -  leaving no room for boredom.

    A journey through time: nine decades of BMW Motorrad.
    A journey through time awaits visitors in the BMW Classic tent - the special exhibition "90 years of BMW Motorrad". Milestones of brand history, fascinating exhibits and two-wheel rarities will be on show over a surface area of 500 m².
    In keeping with the event motto there will also be a draw for two special "90 Years of BMW Motorrad" models - a BMW R 1200 R on Friday and a BMW R 1200 RT on Saturday.

    Historic BMW motorcycles will be joining forces on the Friday for the classic convoy, while the big BMW Motorrad convoy once again takes place on the Saturday for all BMW motorcycles. Riders of other brands are more than welcome to join in too, of course. 
    Another program item this year is the GS Trophy Special.

    Not for the faint-hearted: top-class stunt shows.
    A special premiere at this year's BMW Motorrad Days will be the Original Motodrom: true professionals put on a display of outstanding motorcycle acrobatics on the world's oldest travelling wall. They appear to defy the laws of gravity as they clatter over wooden planks on their BMWs and Indians.
    Stunt legend Chris Pfeiffer has been a regular at the BMW Motorrad Days for years. Guests will be fascinated to see what tricks the four-times world stunt championship winner has up his sleeve this year to thrill his fans on the asphalt of the event arena yet again.

    And motor racing fans will be in their element, too: instead of being parked in the paddock at a racing event, the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Truck will be spending the weekend at the BMW Motorrad Days. Here BMW Motorrad World Superbike Championship riders will sign autographs and answer the numerous questions fans are sure to ask.

    Over 80 exhibitors from Germany and abroad present products and services relating to all aspects of motorcycling (including tuning, parts, tyres, accessories, publications, travel and training programs). And there is also a Custom Bike Area for special conversions. This year even the legendary Ace Cafe London will be involved.

    What would the BMW Motorrad Days be without those legendary parties? Unthinkable! On the Friday evening, "Gerry & Gary" set the mood in the party tent, while on the Saturday it is the turn of the "Blechblos'n". Both bands have established their reputation at the Munich Oktoberfest and can guarantee a great party evening.

    At the US Lodge, "Juicy" perform on Friday followed by "Los Gringos" and "Dreirad" on Saturday. Meanwhile, Byron will be entertaining guests around the camp fire on his guitar on both evenings for those who prefer something quieter. A new program feature this year is the Jazz Breakfast on Sunday, featuring the Metropolitan Jazz Band from Prague.

    -- U.S. Special Operations Forces Currently Using Zero MMX -- 

    Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced the arrival of its all-new 2013 Zero MMX military motorcycle. The MMX was developed exclusively for military use in the U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) and provides Special Operations riders with unique tactical advantages over traditional combustion motorcycles, as the electric powertrain allows for rapid movement over hostile terrain in near silence and minimal heat signature. Zero Motorcycles’ engineering team worked under military contract to develop the motorcycle. The MMX has met the most stringent standards set forth by the U.S. military, as an undisclosed number of MMX motorcycles are currently undergoing full operational testing.

    “It was a very rewarding experience for the Zero team to go through such an exacting development process. The military needed a very specific set of core features on the MMX, and we were incredibly thankful to work side-by-side with them to deliver such a unique product,” said Abe Askenazi, Chief Technology Officer for Zero Motorcycles. “The great news for our civilian customers is that we made the decision to incorporate into our 2013 MX, FX and XU retail motorcycles virtually all of the powertrain enhancements associated with satisfying this project’s stringent military requirements.     The 2013 MMX Military Motorcycles are built off the 2013 MX platform, which is incredibly tough and lightweight, and uses a finely tuned and fully adjustable suspension system to absorb aggressive terrain. Combined with state of the art Z-Force™ technology and an ultra-light frame design, the Zero MMX is agile and fast where it counts.

    The 2013 Zero MMX features the all new Z-Force™ motor. With 54 hp and 68 ft-lbs of torque, the Zero MMX accelerates hard, with incredibly smooth throttle control, to allow riders to tackle bigger obstacles and corner faster. When rolling off the throttle, riders can take advantage of regenerative braking to both modulate speed and extend ride times.     The 2013 Zero MMX integrates the world’s first truly modular power pack system and is available in two configurations: ZF2.8 (one module) and ZF5.7 (two modules). The lockable modules can be individually added or removed, regardless of state of charge, in less than a minute. Charge times can be cut down to around an hour using a scalable quick-charge accessory system or with the CHAdeMO accessory (CHAdeMO charging requires a supporting charge station). Owing a Zero has never been easier as the sealed Z-Force™ motor virtually eliminates all routine powertrain maintenance and drives the rear wheel by way of a beefier 520 chain.

    CHAdeMO Charging Standard
    The CHAdeMO fast charging standard is the most widely adopted DC Fast Charging standard and has over 2000 installed stations worldwide, with an additional 1000 in Europe expected before the end of 2013.  According to Nissan estimates, 2000 fast chargers will be installed in the United States by the end of 2014, with at least 400 in California alone, supported by government electric vehicle infrastructure spending. Based on Pikes Research estimates, 115,000 of these chargers will be installed by 2017.


    Historic Donington Hall to serve as Norton Motorcycles new world headquarters and manufacturing facilities

    Norton Motorcycles (UK) Ltd. announced today that it has completed the purchase of historic Donington Hall, which will serve as its new corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities.

    Situated on 26 acres of classic English countryside and located within the Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit race complex, the new head office and production facilities are situated less than a mile from Norton’s current manufacturing plant. The company will first transition its corporate and engineering staff to the new location, and then subsequently prepare for transfer of its manufacturing to the site.

    Steeped in British history, the main building Donington Hall was constructed in a Gothic Revival style in 1790. While the original 40,000 ft2 Donington Hall and its grand entry greet with remarkable architectural style, the building’s interior features modern office and meeting facilities. As recently as 2012, the site has served as world headquarters for British Midlands Airways, and benefits from a fresh, complete renovation and modernisation. Located within the same grounds to the rear of Donington Hall is an additional 45,000 ft2 of a newly constructed building complex, known as Hastings Hall which will serve as Norton’s production facilities.

    “While our current location has served us well as our starting point for Norton, it does not reflect the identity and culture of the Norton brand well.” stated Norton Boss Stuart Garner. “Donington Hall brings to mind a unique British style of permanence, strength and quality, attributes that we build into every Norton Motorcycle.” He continued “Style and design alone is not enough however, and beyond the drama of Donington Hall’s main building, the site includes a thoroughly modern facility that will allow us to expand production capabilities, as it is clear that we have quickly outgrown the capacity of our original location.”

    As Norton readies itself to increase production and enter new markets worldwide, staying true to its mainstay of quality without compromise and ‘Built in Britain by British hands’ remains a top priority. As such, the company has been bringing more and more manufacturing in-house, and the new location now permits the company to continue to mature and grow within its existing locale.

    The Donington Grand Prix Circuit complex, home of the new Norton headquarters, has become one of the world’s major destinations for motorcyclists and motor sports enthusiasts alike. The site is home to 2013 rounds of the World and British Superbike championship, as well as a full calendar of world class motorcar road racing, vintage racing, rock concerts as well as the Grand Prix Collection museum which houses the world’s largest collection of Formula One race cars.

    BMW Motorrad profits are up

    BMW Motorrad profits are up in the first quarter of 2013 vs. 2012. Profit before tax for the first quarter of 2013 came in at 50 million Euros vs 37 for the same period last year, an increase of 13 million or 35.1%.

    That's pretty good considering BMW are also saying that world markets for the greater than 500 cc segment were down, and in many cases significantly. The only country to register an increase was Japan where the market grew by 11.4%.


    2013 Wiesner Insurance Ontario Cross Country Championship - Season Opener This Weekend

    This Sunday May 5th at Motopark in Chatsworth Ontario marks the start of the exciting 2013 Wiesner Insurance Ontario Cross Country Championship. Weather is set to be perfect and the track conditions at Motopark are exceptional.

    Interest in the series has never been higher. WEC has been working hard to promote cross country racing with the motocross community and it is starting to produce some significant results, XC license registrations are up significantly. Motocross riders are looking to this series as a way to get increased seat time and expand their motorcycle racing skill set. It should produce some interesting results in all classes.

    This season will mark the fourth continuous year of WEC promoting Cross Country Racing at Motopark. WEC is very privileged to have an excellent relationship with this historic race facility.

    Round one of the 2013 series will feature a completely revised course with some brand new trail. As always it will conform to the WEC course standards of a fast, flowing trail system with ample opportunity for passing. Riders with motocross experience will be right at home at this event.

    Wiesner Insurance is returning as title sponsor of the Ontario Cross Country Championship for the fourth year in a row. As in year’s past, Wiesner Insurance pays riders directly at every round with the $100 Fastest Lap Award as well as the $100 Pro Holeshot Award. Inglis Cycle has jumped on board this year with the $100 Amateur Holeshot award. In addition to these prizes is the Pro Payback which puts cash into the hands of the top three Pros.

    New this year will be the Vintage class. This is open to riders of any ability level, on full sized motorcycles with a build date of 1989 or older. The Vintage class will run with the morning program at 11am for 2 hours. It will add yet another element of excitement to an already great program.

    Rider registration is open at 8am and offers full services including transponder sales and rental, race license purchase and event sign in. There is never an extra cost to the rider for these services when registering at the race site.
